Super Mario-kun 2 is a manga series written and illustrated by Yukio Sawada. It was published in the kindergarten-aimed magazine Gakushū Yōchien (学習幼稚園) by Shogakukan from March to December of 1987, as the followup to Super Mario Bros. and/or Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. The plot, composed of four pages, focuses on Mario escorting Princess Peach back to the Mushroom Kingdom after rescuing her, while Bowser and his minions try to stop them.

Content[edit]

March 1987[edit]

Mario has just rescued Peach, and they begin their journey back to the Mushroom Kingdom, while Bowser, licking his wounds, promises to stop them. Their first obstacle is a Mega Goomba that almost eats the two, but they jump on a cloud and fly away. With the Mega Goomba on their tail, Mario finds a Poison Mushroom, grabs it, and tosses it into the Goomba's mouth, shrinking it to a normal size, before he and Peach continue their journey.

June 1987[edit]

A giant Bowser chases off Mario and Peach. They use a beanstalk to hide in the clouds, but Bowser manages to reach them and punches Mario away.

October 1987[edit]

Mario and Peach are followed by persistent rain, despite the weather being sunny. As they look up, a Lakitu is revealed to be the cause of the rain. The Lakitu then proceeds to hit them with lightning, while its rain causes a beanstalk to grow under Mario, which he uses to reach the Lakitu and punch it out of the cloud. He and Peach proceed to torment him, using his cloud to hit him with a snow storm.

The scene shares many similarities with the Lakitu scene in Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen!

December 1987[edit]

Mario has gained some weight, so Peach decides to train him back to shape. Hearing this, a Hammer Brother attempts an ambush and gains the upper hand. A Star appears and Mario rides it like a flying surfing board to crash onto the Hammer Brother, squashing him.

Notes[edit]

  • The manga depicts the ability to steal and ride the Lakitu's Cloud, Mega Goombas, and Giant Bowser, predating the inclusion of those elements in the games.
  • The title panel in the first issue is a remake of the title panel from Super Mario Meiro, with the only difference being Mario's eyebrows position.
