Game Power, ironically called "Gheim Pauà,"[2] was an Italian magazine dedicated to console video games. It ran monthly from December 1991 to November 1997 for a total of 66 issues (August was skipped during the runs). It was published by Studio Vit, who also published K, which talked about PC games and was testing the waters with two special Console issues (the first issue of Game Power even refers to these special publications as predecessors). For the last eleven issues, Il mio castello editore bought the rights but virtually changed nothing from the Studio Vit production style.

Contents[edit]

The magazine maintained its structure for the whole lifespan: reviews (Prove), news in the gaming world (News), sneak peaks and previews (Anteprime), ranking of games divided per console (Grand Prix - Le classifiche di Game Power and Game Flash), fan-mail and fan-sent arts (L'apposta), funny game-centered stories and jokes (Game Over), and announcements (Annunci).

The most particular element was the Game Power Help, or just Help, section: an illustrated guide with maps and walkthroughs. The success of said section pushed the magazine to convert it to a detachable pullout from issue 23 (after an attempt with issue 16 with a pullout of Super Mario World), but after two years, it returned to be integrated in the magazine again.

Shigeru Miyamoto was personally interviewed about Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island by Game Power staff.

Comics[edit]

The "Game Over" section of the magazine included jokes, funny stories, and other stuff (such as a cosplay drama) created by the authors of the magazine. Towards the end, one-page comics drawn by the authors were added and then took center stage in the sections. Sometimes the comics had the authors' characters as protagonists, sometimes it was video game characters.

Fan-made comics would also appear, but only in the "L'apposta" section.

The following are the "Game Over" stories with Super Mario characters:

  • Yoshi's Tales: while Yoshi is playing a Super Mario game, the Mario in the game stops fighting Bowser to ask Yoshi if he bought the last issue of Game Power. When he says no, both Mario and Bowser leave in disgust.
  • Anche i giochi giocano (Even games play games): Mega Man is playing a game of strip poker against Princess Peach, Candy Kong, and Blue Mary. After he wins yet another hand, the girls are left with just their underwear. After exchanging looks, the girls ask Mega Man to turn around, and when he is asked to face back, he is disappointed to see that, with their clothing, the covered body parts are gone too, leaving see-through holes. Upset, Mega Man claims that he will not play poker with sprites again.
  • Baby Sitter: Sonic was asked to babysit Baby Mario. The following morning, while he is having breakfast with Tails, he explains that the baby kept him awake all night long due to his hunger, even after feeding him properly. When Tails asks him how he got him to stop, Sonic points to the baby, surrounded by bitten-off furniture, claiming that "he managed himself".
  • Super Mario Ultra 64enne (Super Mario Ultra 64-years old): an aged up Mario is suffering from old age while he still tries to do his heroic job, while Bowser (not at all affected by the aging), is enjoying every second of his suffering.
