Super Mario Bros.
Mario has been on lots of adventures over the years. In fact, he has been featured in over 200 Nintendo games! While gameplay and graphics have evolved with each new release, Mario's quest to save the day remains the same. Here is a look back at the original Super Mario Bros. franchise.

The reader is shown a timeline of Mario games along with facts about the Super Mario Bros. series being the bestselling video game franchise and Shigeru Miyamoto being the creator of it. The timeline features Donkey Kong, Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Galaxy, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Super Mario 3D Land, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World, Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Run, and Super Mario Odyssey. Below the timeline, there is a blank line where the reader can write down their favorite Mario game.

Mario
Mario is a heroic plumber who goes on quests to help his friends and save the day. He frequently comes to the rescue of his beloved Princess Peach, who is often kidnapped by the evil villain Bowser in an attempt to gain control over all of Mushroom Kingdom.
Name: Mario
Residence: Unknown
Occupation: Plumber
Signature Style: Red "M" hat, red shirt, blue overalls, and dark bushy mustache
Background
Mario was first seen in the video game Donkey Kong which came out in 1981. His character was a carpenter known as Jumpman. Later, he was almost called Mr. Video, but instead was named Mario, after the landlord of a Nintendo building in the United States.

The character description also shows a graph of Mario's sprites from Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, as well as Mario's 3D model from Super Mario 64 and a render from Mario Party DS. There's also a fact about how "contrary to popular belief", Mario's first love was Pauline rather than Peach.

3, 2, 1, Draw!
Mario has become one of the most recognizable characters in the world. But did you know that his look was strategically chosen by his creators? Use the image on the facing page to learn how to draw Mario. Take it box by box.

The reader is tasked with drawing Mario's sprite from Super Mario Bros. using a grid. There's also text on the reference image that says why Mario has a mustache and hat so the programmers would not have to animate his hair nor make expressions.

Luigi
Luigi is Mario's brother. While this tall hero generally plays Mario's sidekick, he does occasionally take the lead, as in Luigi's Mansion.
Name: Luigi
Residence: Unknown
Occupation: Plumber
Signature Style: Green "L" hat, green shirt, blue overalls, and dark bushy mustache
Background
Luigi was introduced in the arcade game Mario Bros. in 1983, to provide games with a two player option. He looked very similar to Mario, but with green clothes instead of red. Soon he was given his own identity, complete with a growth spurt and a personality all his own.

Both Mario and Luigi have look-alike archrivals who often get in the way of their adventures. While Wario and Waluigi may resemble their hero counterparts, make no mistake—they are only looking to cause trouble!
Imagine and draw your own archrival. To name your character, replace the first letter of your name with "W" or "Wa".

The reader is tasked with drawing an archrival of themselves in a similar manner to Wario or Waluigi.

Princess Peach
Princess Peach rules benevolently over Mushroom Kingdom, bringing peace and prosperity to her loyal subjects, the Toads.
Name: Peach

Below Daisy's bio, there is another fact that states she is best friends with Peach. Next to the fact is an activity where the reader is tasked with holding the page up to a mirror to reveal the four kingdoms in Sarasaland: Birabuto, Muda, Easton, and Chai.

Bowser
Bowser is a bad-tempered fire-breathing villain whose goal is to kidnap Princess Peach and take over Mushroom Kingdom (and beyond). For this reason, he is Mario's archenemy, and frequently battles him and his allies.
Name: Bowser
Residence: Unknown
Occupation: King of the Koopas
Signature Style: Yellow body, red hair, sharp horns, spiny shell, and armbands
Background
Bowser and Mario have been fighting since 1985, when the first Super Mario Bros. game was released. Back then, Bowser was the final boss Mario needed to defeat to claim victory and rescue the princess.

Below, there is a quiz asking the reader what Bowser's evil laugh sounds like. B is the correct answer with "Bwa-ha-ha!". The incorrect options are "Tee-hee-hee!", "Heh-heh-heh!" and "Hardy-har-har!" as answers A, C, and D respectively.

Minion Might
Bowser has lots of loyal minions to help carry out his evil plans, including the Koopalings and his son, Bowser Jr. Help Mario match the Koopalings with their names by circling them in the puzzle. Answers can be up, down, forward, or backward.

This is a word search where the reader is tasked with finding Larry, Iggy, Wendy, Lemmy, Ludwig, Roy, Morton, and Bowser Jr.'s names.

Since then, Yoshi has been featured–and has even starred–in many other games, including Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (1995), Yoshi's Story (1997), and Yoshi's Woolly World (2015).

Under Yoshi's bio, there is a fact that stating that Yoshi is an omnivore.

Super Mario Memory Cards!
1. Cut out the playing cards
2. Shuffle the cards and arrange them facedown on a flat surface
3. Turn the cards over two at a time
4. If you match the characters, remove them from game play and go again
5. If you match two Bowsers or two Goombas, you automatically lose the game. Better luck next time
6. If the cards do not match, turn them back over in the same place
7. Repeat (or take turns with a friend) until all the characters are matched and only the Bowser and Goomba cards are left
One player: If you are playing alone, see how few turns it takes to match all the cards.
Two players: If you are playing with a friend, whoever has more matches at the end of the game wins!
Hint: If you turn over a Bowser or Goomba card, turn over a card that you have seen before so you don't risk turning over the matching villain card

This is a memory card game with additional rules featuring cards of Mario, Peach, Luigi, Toad, Daisy, Yoshi, Rosalina, Toadette, a Lakitu, a Goomba, Wario, Bowser, Waluigi, a Koopa Troopa, and Bowser Jr. If the player matches a card with Bowser or a Goomba on it, they lose. If one player is playing, the object of the game is to see how few turns it takes to match all characters besides the Goomba and Bowser. If two players are playing, the object of the game is to get the most matches.

Toad Trouble!
As part of a new plan to take over Mushroom Kingdom, Bowser has sent an imposter Toad to live among the real ones. Can you stop him by spotting the fake in the picture?

The reader is tasked with finding an imposter Toad among the Toads in the image. The fake is a Blue Toad without the center spot on his head. This activity is very similar to the "Spot the Imposter" activity in the Super Mario Official Sticker Book.

Better Half
The characters in Super Mario Bros. have evolved greatly over time, from 8-bit images to fully rendered characters. Now it's your turn to be an artist. Finish drawing each character using the halves down below as guides.

The reader is tasked with drawing the other halves of Peach, Mario, Toad, and Luigi by using the halves already created as guides.

Chain Chomp
During his quests, Mario often encounters villains that look like giant balls and chains, known as Chain Chomps. You can make your own Chain Chomp by following the instructions on the back of this page.
Instructions
1. Cut out the strips and face
2. Create a ring with the first strip
3. Fasten the ends of the ring with tape
4. Loop another strip through the first ring
5. Repeat the process until you have a full chain
6. Attach the face to the end of the chain with tape

The reader is tasked with cutting out the Chain Chomp's head and strips of it's chain, and tape them together to form a Chain Chomp.

Create your own ? Block by following the instructions.
1. Carefully cut out the boxes
2. Fold the paper inward along the edges
3. Tape the bottom and sides together
4. Fold the top in place, and use the tab to keep it closed
When you are finished, follow the same steps on the second block to create a die for the board game on pages 36 and 37.
Hint: Feel free to put a small item in your ? Block.

The reader is tasked with cutting out the sides of a ? Block and folding it to form the block. The reader could also place a small item if they want to. Following this, the reader is tasked with doing the same thing to a die which will be used in the "Board Game" activity.

Loud and Clear
Mario has many famous catchphrases. Use the code to translate some of them.

The reader is tasked with writing down some of Mario's catchphrases by using the code.

Item Letter
Fire Flower H
Red Shell W
Brick Block G
Yoshi's Egg S
Super Star A
Empty Block Y
Spiny Shell P
Green Shell E
1-Up Mushroom O
Warp Pipe I
Coin T
? Block R
Super Mushroom M

When written out, the messages read "Yippee!", "Here we go!", "Oh yeah, Mario time!", "It's-a me, Mario!", and "Mamma mia!"

Board Game
How to Play
1. Use buttons or coins as pieces. Place your pieces on START and take turns on rolling the die on p. 33 to move.
2. Move forward by the number of spaces shown on the die. Then use the key to follow the instructions on that space.
3. The first person to reach the FINISH is the winner!

Two or more players take turns rolling the die numbered 1-3. The number rolled dictates the amount of spaces the player moves. The first player to reach Peach's Castle with the word "FINISH" underneath it wins. A player may land on a space with a symbol on it. In that case, the player has to read the key to follow the instructions.

  • Super Star or Yoshi's Egg: Go forward 5 spaces.
  • Goomba: Go backward 2 spaces.
  • Super Mushroom: Go forward 2 spaces.
  • Bowser Emblem: Go back to START.
Toad Boxes
With a friend, take turns connecting two dots with a straight line. If the line you draw completes a box, put your initials in it and take another turn. Count one point for squares containing your initials. If a box you completed contains a Toad, give yourself two points. When all the boxes are completed, the player with more points wins!

This is a game where two players take turns drawing lines, connecting them with dots. If one player draws a line that creates a box, they write their initials in the box and receive one point. If there is a Toad in the box, the player receives two points. Whoever has more boxes with their initials written in them wins.

This activity is nearly identical to the Toad Boxes activity from the Super Mario Official Sticker Book, with the only difference being the Toad renders used.

Spot the Differences!
Mario has many friends and many foes. Can you find all five differences between these two pictures?

The reader is tasked with identifying five differences between two pictures of the Koopalings, Bowser Jr., and Bowser. Those being Lemmy's bomb not being present, Morton's hammer not having as many shapes around it, Iggy's wand not being present, Roy having purple shades rather than pink shades, and Bowser Jr.'s Junior Clown Car not having make-up.

Pipe Maze
As a plumber, Mario knows his way around underground pipes. Draw a path through the pipes to help him avoid Koopas, Piranha Plants, and Goombas!

This is a maze activity where the reader is tasked with drawing a line from the pipe's entrance to the exit next to the Goal Pole while avoiding exits that are next to Goombas, Piranha Plants, Koopa Troopas, ? Blocks, Brick Blocks, and 1-Up Mushrooms.

Mario Scavenger Hunt
Many of the items in Super Mario Bros. games can also be found in real life. Look at the scavenger hunt list and see if you can find the items by the end of the day.

The reader is tasked with finding a star, mushroom, pipe, coin, block, feather, flower, egg, and leaf in real life and check the boxes if they successfully find the items. The reader has to find them all by the end of the day.

Princess Peach invited Mario to the castle to watch the shooting stars, but before he could get there, Bowser kidnapped the princess! Mario enlisted the help of the Lumas, friendly star creatures, to launch him into space in a special ship to search for the princess.
To find the name of the ship, start at the arrow, and, going clockwise around the circle, write every third letter in order on the blanks.

The reader is tasked with going around a wheel of letters, starting at the arrow, and skip every two letters to spell out Starship Mario.

The comic begins with Mario talking to Peach before Bowser appears and kidnaps her in his Koopa Clown Car. Mario and Toad chase after him. Mario then hops on Yoshi briefly before saving Peach as he and Toad run away from Bowser. Mario bows to Peach afterwards.

In the Game
What would you be if you could create your own Super Mario character? DRAW IT!

The reader is tasked with drawing a character they would want to see in a Super Mario game by drawing them and writing down their skills, abilities, and how that character would help Mario and Peach when saving the day.

Princess Peach's Castle
Fun Facts
  • Princess Peach's Castle is in Mushroom Kingdom.
  • The castle is the home of Princess Peach, as well as the Toad and many other royal attendants.
  • The castle has a high tower and several large wings.
  • One of the most prominent features of the castle is the large stained glass window bearing Princess Peach's likeness.
Using the key on the next page, color the stained glass window.

This is a paint-by-number activity where the reader is tasked with coloring the stained glass window of Peach using 11 numbered colors. The colors are pink, yellow, red, purple, green, magenta, orange, peach, white, sky blue, and blue respectively.

Here we go!
In the New Super Mario Bros. U video game, Princess Peach is captured by Bowser and the Koopalings. With the help of different Yoshis, Mario and Luigi must travel across this new land and find a way to save Peach again. How many differences can you find?

This is another spot the differences activity, where the reader is tasked with finding 6 differences between two pieces of artwork from New Super Mario Bros. U. Those being a Super Acorn being replaced with a Super Mushroom, a Goomba replacing a Paragoomba, a Piranha Plant not being present, Blue Toad holding a blue Baby Yoshi not being present, a rainbow not being present, and a pipe being green instead of yellow.

Following this, there are posters the reader is supposed to cut out. The first one has text reading "Game break! Welcome to my castle." with Mario and Peach behind Peach's Castle. On the other side, there is text reading "Gaming in progress, proceed with caution" with Bowser watching Bowser Jr. play on his Nintendo Switch. The second one is New Super Mario Bros. U artwork.

Notable mistakes and errors[edit]

  • The Mario timeline has some games being represented by renders that either did not exist when those games were initially released, or were never used to promote them.
  • Luigi's background specifically states he first appeared in the Mario Bros. arcade game. This is not true, as the Game & Watch version features him, and was released 3 months prior to the arcade version.
  • Super Mario World's release year is labeled 1990 on Yoshi's background, which is inconsistent with the Mario timeline's release year of 1991. Coincidentally, the former's release year is the release year of the game in Japan on the Super Famicom, while the latter's release year is the release year of the game in North America on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
  • Toad's background states he first appeared in Super Mario Bros. While the Toad species first appeared in that game, the character Toad did not appear until Super Mario Bros. 2. This mistake is repeated in the "Better Half" activity.
  • Also on Toad's background, it has different formatting for the years in parentheses than Yoshi and Toadette's backgrounds, where the text is bolded along with the game titles.

Notes[edit]

  • The fourth rule in the instructions of the "Flip Book" activity reads "Flip the pages quickly to see what Yoshi does next!" on the side with the Super Mario World flipbook.
  • The Wing Cap render used for the "If the cap fits..." activity appears to be cropped from a Wing Mario render from Super Mario 64.
