Nintendo Comic is a canceled comic series by Fleetway Publications, based on the Super Mario franchise. Only a pitch issue was ever produced.
In the 1990s, Nintendo saw how successful Sonic the Comic was in the United Kingdom and Europe. Interested, Nintendo approached chief writer Nigel Kitching and chief artist Richard Elson, asking them to prepare a pitch issue of a similar title featuring Nintendo characters.[1] However, after years of deliberation, Nintendo ultimately rejected the pitch. According to an unknown source, Nintendo was allegedly a more "regulated" and "hands on" than Sega, and waiting for approval for a regular publication, such as a comic, would have been a "nightmare".[1]
Though the Nintendo Comic pitch was rejected, Fleetway Publications eventually produced another comic for Nintendo based on the Donkey Kong franchise: Donkey Kong Jungle Action Special.
Pitch issue[edit]
The pitch issue begins with Mario and Luigi fleeing from Bowser and his minions on Yoshis. Mario remarks that Brooklyn was never like this, with Luigi agreeing. Bowser orders his minions to capture the two plumbers, with Roy affirming. As Luigi's Yoshi spits a fireball at Larry, Mario believes that he has found a route of escape and directs his brother to follow him. However, they soon run into a giant Donkey Kong Jr. Trapped between Bowser's minions and Donkey Kong Jr., Luigi laments that they are trapped, though Mario spots a Warp Pipe. Peeking into the Warp Pipe, Luigi wonders if they have to jump down the pipe, though Mario tells him to trust him, explaining that, if there is one thing he knows, it is pipes.
The comic ends by a narrator asking what new worlds await the Mario Bros.
Notes[edit]
- The Toad found on the cover of the pitch issue bears a great resemblance to the Mushroom People seen in Valiant Comics' Super Mario Bros. comics, being white with an orange cap with red spots.
