Mario Kart: Off to the Races! is a Step into Reading book intended for young audiences, based on the Mario Kart series. It was written by Steve Foxe and published by Random House on July 4, 2023.[1] It serves as an introduction to Mario Kart, introducing the reader to various aspects of the series. The cover art is based on the artwork of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser racing on Toad Circuit for Mario Kart 7.
Plot synopsis[edit]
Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the other racers are preparing for an upcoming kart race, with Mario seated in the Steel Driver. Only one racer can take home the trophy as the fastest racer in the Mushroom Kingdom. At Toad Circuit, after Lakitu does the countdown, the race starts, with the racers immediately speeding off from the starting line.
The book then shows that Rosalina chose a Standard ATV with Monster tires, Iggy chose a Biddybuggy with Standard tires, and Waluigi chose a Standard Bike. The book then says that, in Mario Kart, racers can customize their cars however they like and race across all types of terrain, with some tracks going upside-down, through the skies, and underwater. The book then shows Mario Kart Stadium, where it says that racers turn on anti-gravity so that their karts can drive up walls and upside-down. The book then explains that heavier racers such as Bowser take longer to accelerate but have a higher top speed, while lighter racers such as Toad have a lower top speed but accelerate more quickly. The book then explains that items can change the outcome of a race in an instant, saying that, if Luigi is hit with a Spiny Shell or Banana Peel, he can go from first to last place. The book then shows Bowser's Castle, saying that, if Wendy finds a Super Mushroom, she can speed past the rest of the Koopalings. The book then explains that some items can move and slow down racers in other ways. For example, a Piranha Plant can chomp at other racers. Bloopers can spray ink in racers' faces, which can make it difficult for them to see where they are going. The book then explains that everyone is a friendly rival once the race starts, with Mario and Princess Peach competing to win the race. However, despite the competition, everyone plays fair, saying that, though Wario might not enjoy being hit by Toad's Green Shell, it is not against the rules; he just needs to catch up with the competition. The book then explains that the key to racing is how to deal with trouble, saying that, though things might not go one's way, there is always an opportunity to recover. The book then explains that, sometimes, there can be confusion on the track—so much that it can be difficult to tell if the racers are driving in the right direction. The book concludes by saying that the most important part of the race is not about being first; it is about having fun.
