Super Mario Bros.: A Big Activity Book

Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book, also referred to as just Super Mario Bros., is a softcover-bound book published by Western Publishing in September 1989 under the Golden Book label as part of the Super Mario Bros. series of coloring and activity books.[2][3] This book is based on Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2.

A smaller staple-bound version of the book, simply titled Super Mario Bros.: A Color/Activity Book, was also released.[4]

Contents[edit]

The book begins with an identical plot to the first book. The Mushroom King, Princess Toadstool, and the Mushroom people were living peacefully in the magical Mushroom Kingdom until Bowser and the evil turtles defeated the Mushroom people by turning them into stones, bricks, and horsehair plants. Princess Toadstool was locked in a faraway castle and Mario is determined to save her. The next few pages are coloring pages that show Mario's journey:

Help Luigi get through Coin World

This is a maze puzzle where the reader is tasked with finding a path that connects Luigi to the arrow while avoiding dead ends.

Who drops Spiny's Eggs at Mario?

This is a connect the dots puzzle, that when finished, forms a Lakitu.

Scrambled Picture
This picture is all mixed-up. Cut on the black lines and put the picture together the right way. Color the picture.

The reader is tasked with cutting out the 6 squares of the puzzle and connecting them together correctly. This creates an image of Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad running. The reader is tasked with coloring the picture once completed.

Following this is a coloring page with a Koopaparatroopa, Fireflower, Blooper, 2 Starmen, Little Goomba, 2 Cheep Cheeps, Power Booster Mushroom, clouds, Lakitu, Mario, and a Mushroom person.

Color the picture using the code.

This is a paint by letter activity, where the reader is tasked with coloring a picture of Wart using 6 colors that are labeled by letters A through F. The colors are brown, green, black, yellow, blue, and white respectively.

HIDDEN ENEMIES
Eighteen enemies of the Dream World are hiding. Can you find them all?

The reader is tasked with finding 3 Shy Guys, 3 Phantos, 3 Birdos, 3 Cobrats, 2 Beezos, 2 Tryclydes, and 2 Mousers in 1 image.

WORD SEARCH
In the puzzle below find the names of the friends listed on the opposite page. Look up, down, forward, and diagonally.
Below are the friends who will help Mario, Luigi, Toad, and the Princess.

This is a word search puzzle where the reader is tasked with finding the names of Sprout, Stopwatch, Cherries, Star Man, Mushroom Block, Heart, 1-Up, Vegetables, Potion, Pow, Shells, Coin, Bomb, Rocket, and Key.

Save time by using the Warp Zone to get to the castle.

The reader is tasked with figuring out which pipe in the Warp Zone leads to the castle, with the World 4 pipe being the correct answer.

You can play this game with a friend. Take turns drawing a line, either horizontally or vertically between any two of the dots shown below. If your line finishes an empty box, give yourself 1 point. If you complete a square with a helper inside, give yourself 2 points. If you complete a square with an enemy, subtract 2 points. The player with the most points when all the dots are connected wins.

This is a game where 2 players take turns drawing lines, connecting them with dots. If one player draws a line that creates a box, they receive 1 point. If a rocket, Power Booster Mushroom, coin, vegetable, key, or heart is in the box, the player receives 2 points. If a Trouter, Cheep Cheep, Shy Guy, Piranha Flower, Mouser, or Tryclyde is in the box, the player loses 2 points. Whoever has more points at the end wins.

HELP MARIO GET RID OF HIS ENEMIES
Color the picture. Carefully remove the page from the book. Fold the picture on the dotted line so "A" meets "A" and "B" meets "B".

After coloring the picture, the reader is tasked with tearing the page from the book and folding it across the dotted lines so the quarters featuring Mario and the Princess would overlap the quarters featuring the Piranha Flower, Cheep Cheep, and Tryclyde.

SECRET CODE
Use the code to find out who went with 'Subcon' with Mario.

The reader is tasked with translating the code to reveal the message. When translated, it reads "Princess Toadstool, Luigi, and Toad went with Mario."

Version differences[edit]

This section needs publication improvement. Specifically:

  • Add all of the differences between Super Mario Bros.: A Color/Activity Book.

An alternative version of Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book exists. This version has a product code of 3252-1 as opposed to 3252 and lacks the price of "$1.49" on the front cover. The back cover also slightly rewords the paragraph describing the Golden Book label on the back cover. Despite these small differences the contents of the book and its ISBN are the same.

A smaller staple-bound version of Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book, simply titled Super Mario Bros.: A Color/Activity Book, also exists. This version has a product code of 3252-14 and also lacks the price on the front cover. The back cover is blank, being completely sky blue and lacking an ISBN.

The German version adds more pages that are not present in the original version of Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book. These include another page of Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Toad running, a coloring page of the Princess, and a coloring page with Tryclyde, Birdo, a Shy Guy, a Phanto, Fry Guy, Clawgrip, and Mouser.

Characters[edit]

Clawgrip, Fry Guy, and the Giant Birdo only appear in the German version, the latter of which only appears on the cover.

Notable mistakes and errors[edit]

  • On page 33, the Little Goomba is missing its eyebrows.
  • In "MARIO'S MATCHING GAME", the names for the Mushroom and Mushroom Block were seemingly swapped.
