The Super Mario Bros. coloring and activity books are a line of coloring books published by Western Publishing under the Golden Book label, based on the Super Mario franchise.[2] Five books in total were released for the series, released from 1989 to 1993.[2][4]
While most of the coloring books also contain activities within them, Super Mario Bros.: A Big Coloring Book only contains coloring pages.
Western Publishing also released lines of Super Mario sticker and paint and marker books: Super Mario Bros. Sticker Fun and the Super Mario Bros. Paint 'n' Marker Books. Each line contains two books: one based on the game Super Mario Bros., and the other based on the live-action film of the same name.
Publication history[edit]
Most of the books were originally released in a "Big" format, with the exception of Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book, which was originally released in a "Giant" format. These books are softcover-bound, and both of these formats can be considered the "complete" versions of the books, as they contain all of the pages that later re-releases omit. Most of these books, with the exception of Super Mario Bros.: A Big Activity Book, were later re-released without the "Big" or "Giant" identifiers. These re-releases are staple-bound as opposed to their "Big" and "Giant" counterparts, and omit certain pages that these versions have. Such re-releases of books under the Golden Book label can also be indicated by the presence of a product code ending in "-14", "-15", or "-16"; coloring books under the Golden Book label having these product codes usually tend to not be "Big" or "Giant" versions. However, an alternate version of Super Mario Bros.: A Big Color/Activity Book has a product code ending in "-95", having the same title and contents as its smaller re-release.
Western Publishing's naming formula for titling coloring books under the Golden Book label, including the Super Mario Bros. coloring books, was almost exclusively "[Franchise name]: [Size (None if not Big or Giant)] [Coloring, Activity, or Color/Activity] Book". Because of this, it can be difficult to determine the contents of a coloring book under this label due to multiple coloring books sharing the same title on their spines and possibly their covers. The title on a coloring book's spine can also conflict with the title on the cover: for example Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book is simply listed as "Nintendo Super Mario Bros. Color/Activity Book" on its spine, which describes different books under the Golden Book label based on the Super Mario franchise, including a smaller re-release of this book.
The first three books, Super Mario Bros.: A Big Color/Activity Book, Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book, and Super Mario Bros.: A Big Activity Book, were originally released in 1989.[2][6][7] The fourth book, Super Mario Bros. 3: A Big Color/Activity Book, was originally released in 1990.[8] The fifth and final book, Super Mario Bros.: A Big Coloring Book, was originally released in 1993.[4]
Super Mario Bros. 3: A Big Color/Activity Book was re-released in 1991,[9] while Super Mario Bros.: A Big Color/Activity Book was re-released in April 1992.[10]

Translations[edit]
Super Mario Bros.: A Giant Color/Activity Book and Super Mario Bros.: A Big Activity Book were translated into German, under the titles Super Mario Bros. - Wundersame Abenteuer and Super Mario Bros. - Wunderlandreisen respectively. Both books feature artwork from The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!, with the former book featuring Mario riding on the Giant Birdo, who has Toad in her talons, and the latter book featuring Mario and his friends riding on a magic carpet. The former book also features Cramalot Castle from the episode "King Mario of Cramalot". Both books were released in 1991.[1]
Super Mario Bros.: A Big Activity Book was also translated into Canadian French, under the title Super Mario Bros.: Un cahier d'activités. The translation was released in 1990.[5] The Super Mario Bros.: A Big Color/Activity Book was additionally translated into Latin American Spanish, under the title Super Mario Bros.: Libro para colorear y actividades; the Latin American Spanish translation uses the original "Big" release as its base. The Latin American Spanish version also features a book not present in Western Publishing's original line of Super Mario coloring books: Super Mario Bros.: Libro para colorear.
