Club Nintendo was Nintendo's official magazine in Hungary, published from 1993 to 1995 and distributed by Stadlbauer.[1] It can be seen as the Hungarian equivalent to the American Nintendo Power.
Overview[edit]
The magazine was a Hungarian translation of the Club Nintendo magazine in the United Kingdom. The magazine was only available in a few locations in Hungary, where only the first two issues could be bought at newstands for 150 ft. Beginning with the third issue, it was mainly sent by mail only to Club Nintendo subscribers. An issue consisted of 32 pages covering tips and tricks, game guides, fan mail, records, and game demos.[1]
Signs that the magazine was a translation were evident, with the magazine having spelling, grammatical, and composition errors. It was also common to feature profiles and records of foreign players.
After the first two issues, the magazine began to be promoted with Club Nintendo cards. Stadlbauer had distributed these cards in Austria and Germany, and anyone who had bought SNES and Nintendo 64 games and consoles in Hungary at the time could have found one of these cards accompanied with it.[1]
Stadlbauer sent the Club Nintendo magazine starting with the third issue. However, it was rather difficult to achieve this goal, with its editor-in-chief, Tibor Dévényi, already in Elektor Kalandor, had another television show, Tessék hívni!. In these shows, he would read the address for Club Nintendo, where an application letter had to be sent. In response, he sent a check where, if the applicants paid, they would receive issues of the magazine.[1]
This posed a serious issue for its applicants, but another issue was the irregular publication of the issues. Initially, the magazine was published every two months, but was later reduced to every three months. Because of this, members believed that they were victims of fraud. One issue also published a letter of complaint from a reader, who claimed that they had paid two months ago and had not received neither the magazine nor the card. The card was delayed until February of 1995.[1]
Along with the card, a brochure was also sent, where one could request games and consoles for a discount, which included games on the Game Boy and SNES. Subscribers could use up to four discounts per year, though in some cases they could only use up to two discounts on the same game. There was also an additional 2000 ft. coupon.[1]
In 1995, the editorial team assured its readers that the magazine would return to its bimonthly format beginning in 1996. They also promoted a book titled Nintendo Kalauz (Nintendo Guide) as compensation and launched a public poll to determine what games its fans would like to read about. However, none of these plans would materialize, and Club Nintendo ceased operations in 1995. The rest of the club fees were used to buy games.[1]
