Super Mario-kun Gekijō - Yoshi New Island is a special story of Super Mario-kun Gekijō, a spin-off of Super Mario-kun published on CoroCoro Ichiban! and written by Yukio Sawada, directly based on Yoshi's New Island.
The chapters were originally serialized in CoroCoro Ichiban! from October 2014 to June 2016. In June 2016, the entire Yoshi's New Island series was reprinted in a single book and published by CoroCoro Comic.
It was published in French in 2021,[2] and in Italian, initially scheduled for release in December 2025[3] but it was delayed[5] to release it alongside The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on April 1, 2026,[6] but later moved it to April 3rd.[4]
Content[edit]
Stage 1[edit]
こんにちは! ベビィマリオ!! (Hello! Baby Mario!!)
A Stork is delivering Baby Mario and Baby Luigi, but on its flight, the stork is ambushed by Kamek and his Toadies. The Magikoopa manages to snatch the babies, much to the Stork's horror. From inside his bundle, Baby Mario emerges and bites hard Kamek's back. From the pain, Kamek drops Baby Mario and he lands on Egg Island, right on top of Yoshi's back. While demanding who dropped the baby, Yoshi also does an exposition: Egg Island was one of the Yoshis' paradises, until Baby Bowser came to occupy it.
After spending some time figuring out if they should eat the baby or not, Baby Mario explains, with Yoshi understanding each of his babbles, that he needs to find his brother Luigi and rescue him. As he is able to point to where Baby Luigi has been taken, Baby Mario is taken by Yoshi as he decides to take him to his destination sure that he will be able to put an end to Bowser's reign. As they leave, the other Yoshis wish them good luck and for Yoshi to not eat the baby.
Stage 2[edit]
ねらわれたベビィマリオ! (Baby Mario is targeted!)
While on his way towards Baby Luigi, Yoshi feels Baby Mario moving a lot on his back, but limits himself to asks him to keep quiet, until he turns around to see someone replaced the baby with a snake: the culprit is a Ukiki, who has taken the child. Yoshi demands the baby back, but gets bombarded with Pokeys. With Yoshi defeated, the Ukiki leaves, while a group of Flightless Goonies come to Yoshi's aid. With the support of the birds, Yoshi prepares a rudimentary trap by placing a Banana Bunch under a basket. But eventually, Yoshi's hunger bests him and he devours the bananas. Yoshi places a CoroCoro Ichiban magazine as a new bait and, despite the Goonies' critics, it works and the Ukiki falls in the trap.
Unable to give up, the Ukiki attacks Yoshi by throwing more Pokeys, but he dodges all of them, until the Ukiki throws a giant one, striking him. The Goonies laugh at Yoshi's attempts to the point that he eats most of them and thus lays an egg. With a projectile of his own, Yoshi strikes at the Ukiki, defeating him and saving Baby Mario. The Ukiki asks for forgiveness, and Yoshi, after a brief scolding, accepts his apology and invites him on his journey. He even offers him some kibi dango as a peace offering, much to the Goonies' confusion regarding this peculiar retelling of Momotarō's tale.
Stage 3[edit]
おマメに
Ukiki is told of their mission: reuniting the two baby twins by following Baby Mario's directions as he is pointing towards Baby Luigi's location. Just then, the baby is taken away by a prehensile vine belonging to Big Beanie. Ukiki jumps at it to save the baby, but gets gulped by the boss and turned into a Mame-san. Yoshi tries with a different approach: first, he tries (and fail) to disguise as a bean and then tries to gulp the boss with his tongue, only for the boss to place extra spicy wasabi on it.
Suffering from the spiciness, Yoshi gulps a lot of water from a nearby river to the point of becoming fat. Bean-Ukiki points to a nearby Fire Watermelon and instructs Yoshi to eat it so he can use the granted fire breath to burn the Big Beanie. The boss laughs, claiming that a "small fire" will not do any harm to him, but Yoshi instead spits boiled water at it, deafing Big Beanie and the Mame-san by cooking them. Baby Mario is rescued and, to appease their hunger, Yoshi suggests eating the cooked beans. As the chapter ends, Ukiki asks how can he go back to normal from his bean form?
Stage 4[edit]
まんきつ!
It is Christmas, so Yoshi, Baby Mario, and Ukiki decide to celebrate it. Unfamiliar with the customs, Ukiki asks Yoshi what it is supposed to do during Christmas. According to Yoshi, people indulge in a wide variety of delicious food. As he exhibits this tradition, he is growing fatter and fatter. He then explains the tradition of Santa Claus, describing the jolly man and even pointing out that he looks identical to the guy snatching Baby Mario from under their noses. Having realized what he just said, Yoshi yells at "Santa" to stop, as he reveals to be a Bandit in disguise. Yoshi chases after him, but he is slow down by the food that fattened him up, so he begins to roll.
Having caught up with the Bandit, the latter throws Baby Mario to a Koopa Paratroopa, who flees in the sky. Unable to chase it, Yoshi is direct by Ukiki inside a Whirly Gate, where he transforms into a helicopter with a pig snout. While chasing the kidnapper, Yoshi eats other Paratroopas fattening up even more to the point of plummeting down due to his weight. While the Paratroopa laughs at Yoshi, Ukiki places a Spring Ball under him and Yoshi bounces back up against the Paratroopa, who drops Mario, who in terms is caught by Ukiki.
The chapter ends with Baby Mario having fun balancing on the round fat Helicopter Yoshi, while Ukiki states that he seems satisfied with his Christmas present.
Stage 5[edit]
ニセヨッシーあらわる! (Fake Yoshi appears!)
From behind a bush, a Shy Guy and an imitator Shy Guy are spying on the protagonist. Thanks to the shapeshifting abilities of the second Shy Guy, he can go disguised ad a Fake Yoshi and snatch away Baby Mario. After a couple of tries, the imitator Shy Guy successfully disguises himself as Fake Yoshi and is shoved towards the group. It soon becomes clear that one of the Yoshis is an impostor, but due to a fight between the two, now it is impossible for Baby Mario and Ukiki to distinguish them, so the latter offers a solution: after identifying them as Yoshi A and Yoshi B with two signs, he suggests the two to make a series of challenges and whomever wins more points will be recognized as the real Yoshi.
The first challenge is a race, then an egg throwing competition, and a swimming race in a cold river. Yoshi B manages to win all three challenges and earn three points in total, only to discover that the last challenge is worth 10 (rendering the previous challenges irrelevant): a tug-of-war with Baby Mario acting as the rope. The two Yoshis begin to pull at Baby Mario's arms, but seeing the baby in pain, Yoshi A forfaits the challenge. Yoshi B celebrates his victory, only for Ukiki to hit him with a barrage of Pokeys: only the real Yoshi would have cared for the safety of the child. Defeated, the Fake Yoshi returns to his Shy Guy partner, while Yoshi squeezes Baby Mario in a tight hug, nearly choking him and causing Ukiki to reconsider his decision.
Stage 6[edit]
わらって! ベビイマリオ!! (Laugh! Baby Mario!)
The group is taking a rest, enjoying the scent of the flowers, until they are hit with Baby Mario's smelly diaper and his cries. Even after Yoshi had changed him, Baby Mario still would not stop crying. To make him laugh, Yoshi and Ukiki try to make silly faces, but end up looking more scary. Next they try with a toy, by transforming Yoshi in Bobsled Yoshi, but without snow they are unable to use it. After many more tries, Ukiki and Yoshi are about to give up, when a group of Shy Guy passes by and snatches away the baby.
Caught by surprise, Yoshi and Ukiki chase after them, noticing they have no projectiles to throw at them to slow them down. Ukiki picks something from the ground and throws it. Yoshi sees that it is a Yoshi Star which lands on Baby Mario, turning him invincible. Laughing in joy, Baby Mario gets rid of the Shy Guys and, reuniting with Yoshi and Ukiki, accidentally hits them with his invincible aura.
Stage 7[edit]
あわあわサルカニ
Passing through the sewers, still following Baby Mario's directions, the group encounters a group of small Clawdaddies impeding on their path. Ukiki asks Yoshi to eat them, but he gets pinched by the Clawdaddies, Ukiki, using a Yoshi's egg, takes care of them all. Defeated, the Clawdaddies call for their boss. Anticipating the arrival of another small Clawdaddy, the Ukiki laughs, only to be faced with the enormous King Clawdaddy.
King Clawdaddy deflects the egg and then cuts off the hairs on Ukiki's head, leaving him bald. When Yoshi gets targeted, he puts on a bald cap to dissuade the enemy from giving him a haircut, but gets launched into the water sewage. Yoshi emerges back up bloated and full of water, much to King Clawdaddy's amusement, but Ukiki pats him on his back, causing him to spit out the water out against the boss. This causes the bubbles covering his body to disappear, allowing Yoshi to hit his frail naked body with an egg, defeating him. As the heroes continue on their journey, the Clawdaddies, impressed by Yoshi, follow him to ask him to become their new boss.
Stage 8[edit]
ヨッシーママにおまかせ! (Leave it to Mother Yoshi!)
To better take care of Baby Mario and avoid more cries, Yoshi gets the idea of dressing up as a mother. Ukiki is not convinced by this idea, but it works, and Baby Mario is pleased. In the following moments, Yoshi spends time taking care of Mario, changing his diapers, breastfeeding him (with fake mammaries), playing with him with his transformations, and reading him fairy tales.
Suddenly, Baby Mario wanders off towards a rock wall, Yoshi chases him down, slamming against the wall, then he sees him going towards a lake, and runs to rescue him, only for him to fall into the lake. Lastly, Yoshi sees Mario climbing the rock wall and, this time, rock debris ends up falling on Yoshi. In all of this, Baby Mario gets out of these situations unscathed, and when the injured Yoshi finally catches up with him, he discovers he was picking up flowers to make a bouquet for "mama". Yoshi is touched by this, until he gets bit to the nose by a Piranha Plant that was accidentally collected with the flowers.
Stage 9[edit]
ノモズを
While relaxing at Lunge Fish Swamp, Baby Mario is upset: his only toys are sticks and stones, not really amusing materials. Suddenly a giant Lunge Fish emerges from the water and swallows Baby Mario, before going back into the water. After recovering from the shock, Ukiki and Yoshi come up with a plan to save the baby. As the both of them do not know how to swim, Ukiki suggest procuring a Metal Eggdozer to walk on the bottom of the river, but they are unable to get one.
The next solution is to fish the Lunge Fish. At first, Yoshi uses a 100'000 yen bill as the bait. It works, but the Lunge Fish escapes with the bait. The same happens when a CoroCoro Ichiban! issue is used, but strangely not with a copy of Super Mario-kun Volume 49 (much to the author's annoyance). Ukiki then resorts using Yoshi as the bait and dunks it after tying him to the fishing line. After a while, Yoshi demands to be brought back up. Ukiki presumes the Lunge Fish took the bait, but it is the opposite: Yoshi caught the Lunge Fish, which appears exhausted. After opening his mouth, Baby Mario emerges with a bunch of toys: evidently the Lunge Fish was tired down by Baby Mario playing his belly with the toys he had previously swallowed.
Stage 10[edit]
With rain coming down, the trio is looking for a place to take cover and spots a giant building called "Hotel Ghostera".[A] While Ukiki finds it quite suspicious, Yoshi enter and is welcomed in by a Boo with a wig, but once again, only Ukiki notices it, just like two other Boos behind them about to attack them, before they disappeared as Yoshi turns around. Another Boo, dressed as a bellboy, asks for their luggage, and Yoshi passes Baby Mario to it. Only then the Boos drop their disguises and Yoshi sees their tricks.
Yoshi tries to eat them, but they all escape from his belly through his derrière and when he goes for the eggs, he discovers that a Boo swiped them before. As the Boos laugh at Yoshi for being left without weapons, he grabs Ukiki as a bat and starts swinging him around. After hearing enough grunts of pain, Yoshi cease his attacks, only to discover the Boo did not get hurt in the attack: it was Ukiki who was lamenting. As he sees the result of his actions, an injured, bloody, and bruised up monkey, the Boos get so scared by his damaged appearance that they leave, forgetting Baby Mario behind. Yoshi smiles at the (eventual) success of his strategy, while Ukiki has something else to say about it.
Stage 11[edit]
おいしい! お
At Bowser's Castle, Baby Bowser is ordering Kamek to bring him Baby Mario. Kamek tries to convince him to give up, as they already have Baby Luigi, but Baby Bowser explains that only together they are worthy prisoners to have. Also, Baby Mario's gang is slowly decimating all of their minion and thus must be stopped. Kamek is then sent to take Baby Mario himself (and also pick up a bento for Baby Bowser).
Kamek arrives to his destination and, hidden between the bushes, sees the trio about to enjoy their own bento boxes, with Yoshi having a giant Mario-themed one. Inspired by the theme, Kamek turns Yoshi's bento box content into Goombas, Shy Guys, Koopa Troopas, and Pokeys. He first hears someone lamenting, only to discover that it is the minions being mauled by Yoshi, not at all upset by his menu change.
Right after the lunch break, Yoshi uses his transformations to continue their journey. Kamek first has to chase Helicopter Yoshi on the sky, then Jackhammer Yoshi underground, and even Submarine Yoshi underwater. Tired out, Kamek gives up the chase and returns empty handed to Baby Bowser (who is also more upset noticing the lack of a bento). The chapter ends with Hot-Air Balloon Yoshi asking Ukiki if he was under the impression that they were being followed, but he thinks it was their imagination.
Stage 12[edit]
ハナチャンの
During a break, Yoshi and Ukiki leave Baby Mario to play with a Flutter. Things start to go south when Baby Mario plucks the Flutter's flower from her head, causing her to become aggressive. Ukiki has a solution: putting the flower to its place, but Yoshi has broken it by stepping on it. The Flutter attacks them, so Ukiki suggest replacing the flower with another one, but Yoshi places a fake nose instead.[B]
At this point, Ukiki proposes to use anything else as a replacement. Yoshi tries with various wigs (including Princess Peach and Toad's), then a bunch of stuff and even all of their coins, but nothing seems to work. While avoiding another of the Flutter's attacks, Ukiki's tail slides in the Flutter's flower hole. This causes the Flutter to calm down and flies away. Ukiki calls for help, and Yoshi tells him to look for something to fit in the flower hole.
Stage 13[edit]
ウッキイマリオがさらわれた!? (Ukiki Mario was kidnapped!?)
Fascinated by the idea of wearing human clothing, Ukiki takes Baby Mario's cap and diaper and wears it, while giving to the baby watermelon rinds to cover him. Yoshi is about to scold him, when a Fishing Lakitu passes by and takes away Ukiki, mistaking him for Baby Mario. Yoshi shrugs and decides to continue, but Baby Mario wants his hat back so he decides to go after the kidnapper. Meanwhile, the Lakitu finally takes notice of his mistake, but still decides to try his luck and cash the bounty from Baby Bowser.
Yoshi arrives, but the Lakitu uses all of his arsenal to stop him: first, using the Super Mario Maker Edit mode, he blocks his path with some Brick Blocks, then uses his cloud weather functions to hinder him. Yoshi is desperate, unable to do anything to beat the Lakitu. Moved by this situation, the Super Mario Maker hand cursor takes pity on him and drags Yoshi in front of Lakitu. Ukiki rejoices at the idea of being rescued, but Yoshi just takes Mario's cap and continues on his way, leaving the Lakitu baffled at what just happened and Ukiki angry for being left behind once again.
Bonus[edit]
Fishing Lakitu tries again and he fishes someone wearing Mario's Cap, but he gets the wrong person once more: this time it is the author, who takes the time to advertise the 51 Super Mario-kun volumes. Lakitu also puts together the fact that he was the one using the Super Mario Maker cursor to help Yoshi reach him.
Stage 14[edit]
ミスしてゲット! むてきはね!! (Lose and obtain them! Invincible wings!!)
Yoshi and Ukiki are about to play baseball, but Baby Mario reminds them that they have a quest to complete: reaching Bowser's Castle and saving Baby Luigi. Continuing, the group arrives to a gorge. With Yoshi unable to transform into a Hot-Air Balloon, the group resorts to take a nearby Lift. Unfortunately, due to the various Piranha Plants and Ravens on their way, the group keeps failing to cross the gorge.
With Yoshi about to give up, Ukiki reminds him that, after a certain number of fails, you are gifted with a pair of Flutter Wings to become invincible and cross the stage while permanently flying. Yoshi sees the bubble containing them and pops it. He first gets some springs at his feet,[C] then he finds the actual Flutter Wings bubble and becomes the invincible Winged Yoshi. Yoshi finally crosses the gorge and defeats the enemies who troubled him, but he has another lapse in memory regarding their next destination.
Stage 15[edit]
Finally, the group arrives in Bowser's Castle. To celebrate, Yoshi is organizing a Christmas party. Using some yarn balls, Yoshi makes a giant stocking for Baby Mario (and advertises Yoshi's Woolly World release by being covered in wool), then a banquet, and lastly he decorates a nearby Spike Ball that is blocking a hallway with the stocking and wet diapers and towels. The Spike Ball reacts in offense and it is revealed to be Tap-Tap the Golden.
Unable to swallow it and with it being able to eat the eggs he throws, Yoshi is about to succumb to Tap-Tap the Golden's rolling spikes, but Baby Mario gets an idea and throws the yarn ball at the enemy, turning him into a harmless ball of tangled yarn. With the threat eliminated, Yoshi and Ukiki express their gratitude to Baby Mario and continue their celebration. Once they finish eating, the group moves into the hallway that had been blocked by Tap-Tap the Golden. However, Yoshi is unable to pass through because of the weight he had gained from the food he just ate.
Stage 16[edit]
A Shy Guy informs Baby Bowser that the Yoshi team has infiltrated the Castle. While Baby Luigi rejoyces at this news, Baby Bowser tells him to quiet down and activates the camera system to spy on them. Much to his disappointment, the trio is now celebrating New Year's Eve, even though it has been over for a while. Baby Bowser sends Kamek to stop them, seeing him too making signposts for New Year's Eve.
Kamek obeys, but once he is face to face with Yoshi, he mistakenly transforms the nearby blocks into toys for the Eve instead of creating enemies. With his magic set in New Year's Eve mood, Kamek proposes another solution to resolve their fight. Meanwhile, the cameras go down, forcing Baby Bowser to go and check himself what they are doing, discovering that they are playing hanetsuki. Baby Bowser yells at them, but Yoshi invites him to join their games. When Baby Bowser retorts that they have forgotten about Baby Luigi, Yoshi finally seems to have an appropiate reaction, only to then make a nengajō for him, exasperating Baby Bowser.
Stage 17[edit]
かぜにはご
Having lost both Baby Bowser and Kamek, the trio is back at wandering through the castle, and this time Baby Mario cannot help them as he caught a cold due to the snowy weather outside and the lack of clothing. While checking each of the castle rooms by themselves, and only finding bathrooms after bathrooms, Ukiki and Yoshi are ambushed by a Snifit plotoon, but they too are down with the cold and unable to fire their projectiles at them.
Yoshi eats them up, but as expected he too is infected by the cold. As he and Baby Mario come down with a high fever too, one of the castle doors opens, letting all the snow outside inside. This appears as a blessing in disguise as Yoshi and Baby Mario's high fever allow the snow to melt and their illness to be nullyfied by the cold snow, much to Ukiki confusion. Meanwhile, even Baby Bowser's control room was covered in snow, trapping him in.
Stage 18[edit]
ウソつきはみんなを
Still traversing Bowser's Castle, Yoshi and Baby Mario finds Baby Luigi, only to realize that it was Ukiki in disguise for an April Fool's joke. This reminds Yoshi that they should also celebrate Hanami, much to Ukiki's annoyance over yet another festivity to participate in before the grand finale. Just then, the group spots a door with a sign claiming the exposition of beautiful flowers. Ukiki is suspicious about it, but Yoshi and Baby Mario enter anyway.
Inside, the trio find themselves in a room full of tombstones with their names engraved on them and flowers. Another sign explains that they have fallen victim to Baby Bowser's prank and now they will be fighting against Punkey the Pokey Prince. After being beaten to a pulp by his spikes and Pokey projectiles, Yoshi pleads to Punkey to spare him and take down Ukiki first. As he is about to grant this final request, Punkey is stopped by Baby Bowser, arrived in the chamber, asking him to leave the room so that he can take care of the heroes. Punkey obeys, while Ukiki trembles in fear, only to discover that it was Yoshi in disguise, inspired by his April Fool's joke from before.
Meanwhile, Punkey encounters Baby Bowser in another room, confused by the situation, while the young Koopa lets out a sigh of desperation.
Final stage[edit]
ベビィルイージをとりもどせ! (Get Baby Luigi back!)
It is the final chapter and thus the final battle is at hand. Proceeding to the castle, the trio finds itself in a room full of enemies, who are trying to get at least one apparition before the conclusion of the manga. The room is so full that it is impossible to navigate it, and it is useless to eat the enemies as more appear one after another.
Frustrated, Yoshi screams out loud that he will not go down to an "ugly and stinky shortstack" like Baby Bowser. Hearing that, Baby Bowser grows big in a fit of rage, causing the destruction of the castle and for all its occupants to fly off. While flying off, the trio manages to find Baby Luigi, catch him and, through Yoshi's Hot-Air Balloon form, return to the other Yoshis.
The Baby Mario Bros. are finally reuinted, peace reigns over Egg Island, and Baby Bowser is crying over the ruins of his palace, with only his short temper to blame.
Extra stage[edit]
Of the entire castle, only one door remains, one that not even Baby Bowser knows what hides behind it. Upon checking it, the adult Bowser, armed to the teeth, emerges from it, ready to battle Yoshi. Kamek and Baby Bowser explain to him that Yoshi has already left. Feeling disappointed after waiting in vain, Bowser gifts his younger self a Yoshi costume. After making him put it on, Bowser begins to punch him to relieve some stress. The manga ends with Baby Bowser pleading Kamek for help, while he witnesses the scene in extreme confusion.
