Obstacle Bubbles,[1] also referred to as sea anemones,[2] are underwater obstacles that appear in New Super Mario Bros. They appear as translucent yellow-orange bubbles with an eight-spoked, plant-like symbol on or inside them, and they bounce Mario or Luigi in the opposite direction from which he swam into them.

Obstacle Bubbles appear in only two underwater courses. In World 1-A, six Obstacle Bubbles are clustered together about a third of the way through. If a nearby P Switch is pressed, several Blue Coins in the formation of a W appear between the Obstacle Bubbles. In World 8-3, two Obstacle Bubbles appear in the beginning of the underwater course, and several Obstacle Bubbles appear sporadically throughout the second half of the course, when Mario or Luigi is being chased by a Mega Unagi. Mario or Luigi should avoid making contact with the Obstacle Bubbles, for they would bounce him towards the incoming Mega Unagi.
