"Underwater Theme",[2] also known as "Underwater BGM",[3] is a musical theme composed by Shiho Fujii for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where it plays in the underwater levels. This theme succeeds "Underwater Theme" from New Super Mario Bros., and would make numerous reappearances throughout the New Super Mario Bros. series.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii marks the first appearance of "Underwater Theme".

In New Super Mario Bros. 2, the original version of "Underwater Theme" plays in the underwater levels.

A woodblock beat is added to the instrumentation whenever Mario or Luigi are in their Raccoon/Fox forms.

A bell synth arpeggiator is added to the instrumentation whenever the Gold Ring is active.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, the original version of "Underwater Theme" plays in the underwater levels.

Vocalizations are added to the instrumentation whenever the player is holding onto a Baby Yoshi. This remix is titled "Underwater Theme (Baby Yoshi)" in the Nintendo Music app.

In Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2, the original version of "Underwater Theme" plays in New Super Mario Bros. U-style underwater-themed levels. Additional bongo percussion is added to the instrumentation whenever the player rides a Yoshi.

An ambient arrangement of "Underwater Theme" plays while editing New Super Mario Bros. U-style underwater-themed levels in the Course Maker. This arrangement uses eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.

Exclusively in Super Mario Maker 2, a music box arrangement of "Underwater Theme" plays in the nighttime version of New Super Mario Bros. U-style underwater-themed levels.

Mario Party: Star Rush[edit]

In Mario Party: Star Rush, the original version of "Underwater Theme" is a playable song in Rhythm Recital. It is erroneously labeled as originating from New Super Mario Bros. U.

Mario Kart World[edit]

In Mario Kart World, a swing arrangement of "Underwater Theme" can play in Free Roam during the day. It is titled "Underwater BGM" in the game's pause menu.
