"Underground Theme"[1][2] is a musical theme composed by Kenta Nagata for New Super Mario Bros. Wii, where it plays in most underground levels. It is an arrangement of "Underground BGM" from Super Mario Bros., transposed fully into a 4
4
time signature, with added percussion and "paah" vocals, as well as chords in the blank space between bars. Succeeding "Underground Theme" from New Super Mario Bros., the theme makes numerous reappearances in the New Super Mario Bros. series.

History[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros. U, the original version of "Underground Theme" plays in underground levels, and the additional percussion heard when riding Yoshi returns. Vocalizations are added to the theme whenever a player holds onto a Baby Yoshi; this remix is titled "Underground Theme (Baby Yoshi)" in the Nintendo Music app. All three versions return in New Super Luigi U, New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

Super Mario Maker[edit]

In Super Mario Maker, "Underground Theme" returns as the default background music for underground-themed courses in the New Super Mario Bros. U game style, where the theme was previously reused. The additional percussion heard when riding Yoshi also returns. An arrangement of the theme plays while editing these courses in the Course Maker, using eight tracks that fade in and out randomly to create a dynamic mix.
