"Ground BGM" (Super Mario Bros.)

In Super Mario 3D Land, World 2-3's theme is a sped-up arrangement of "Ground BGM" from Super Mario Bros. starting at the second bar. This arrangement was made to correspond with the voxel art found in the level; the entire instrumentation is swung, rather than just the percussion. The intro is a synth bass playing a lead-up to the arrangement. This theme is transposed to five semitones higher than the original.

History[edit]

Super Mario 3D Land[edit]

Super Mario 3D Land marks the first appearance of World 2-3's theme. This theme also plays in the level's Special 1 counterpart, Special 1-3, and a version without the lead-up also plays in Coin Heavens and in golden Mystery Boxes.

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

“This is sure to sound familiar: it's an arrangement of the theme from the original Super Mario Bros. The director actually told us that we were free to give it an old-school feel. We are huge fans of 8-bit sound effects, so were happy to add these to the mix.”
Liner notes in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack

In Super Mario 3D World and the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, World 2-3's theme plays in the various Coin Heavens accessed through Cloud Cannons that appear throughout the game, as well as the entirety of Coin Express and Rainbow Run. It is likewise titled "Rainbow Run" in the Nintendo Music app and the official Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

In Super Mario Odyssey, World 2-3's theme plays while Mario is invincible after a Super Mario amiibo is scanned with Right Button held.
