“This section features panels on the floor that light up when you step on them. We made it so the musical arrangement becomes lavish as you step on the panels. Once you've lit up a floor panel, it will play the same note each time you step on it. Why not try to come up with a melody of your own?”
—Liner notes in the Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack

"Light the Color Panels!",[1] also known as "Light the Colour Panels!",[2] is a musical theme in Super Mario 3D World, where it plays in sub-areas that feature Color Panels.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

Super Mario 3D World / Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury[edit]

Super Mario 3D World marks the first appearance of "Light the Color Panels!", where it plays in the sub-areas in Sunshine Seaside, Really Rolling Hills, Bob-ombs Below, Night Falls on Really Rolling Hills, and Rainbow Run, which all feature Color Panels. As more Color Panels are lit, the instrumentation increasingly becomes more bombastic. After all Color Panels are lit, the theme is replaced by "Mario's Color Panels", except in Rainbow Run, where it is instead replaced by "Link's Color Panels". Both of these themes incorporate the first drum loop layer of "Light the Color Panels!".

"Light the Color Panels!" returns in the Nintendo Switch port, Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, for the same purposes. In the official Super Mario 3D World Original Soundtrack album, each version of the theme is played in sequence on the same track.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

In Super Mario Odyssey, an arrangement of the second layer of "Light the Color Panels!" arranged by Shiho Fujii plays in the Koopa Trace-Walking and Picture Match minigames. It is titled "Koopa's Trace-Walking" in the Nintendo Music app and "Climactic Duel!" in the game's sound test. This arrangement consists of an idiophone, hi-hats, and a faint ascending bassline.
