Super Mario Maker 2 update history

This is a detailed list of updates that Super Mario Maker 2 has received since its launch on June 28, 2019. To play online, players must have downloaded the most recent software update.[1]
Versions[edit]
Ver. 1.0.1[edit]
A update was released on June 28, 2019, the same day that the game launched. The following release notes were provided:

Ver. 1.1.0[edit]
An update was released on October 1, 2019.[2] The following release notes were provided:
- Course World
- Network Play
- Added "Play with friends"
- You can now play online with friends in either Multiplayer Versus or Multiplayer Co-op modes.
- You can now select courses uploaded to Course World as well as courses saved to Coursebot.
- The Nintendo Switch Online mobile app is now supported.
- You can automatically match online with people that you were matched with via the app, and can voice chat with them.
- Added features to "Nearby Play"
- You can now play in Multiplayer Co-op mode as well as Multiplayer Versus mode.
- You can now select courses uploaded to Course World as well as courses saved to Coursebot.
- When playing a course saved to Coursebot, the host system doesn't need to be connected to the internet.
- Added "LAN Play"
- Players connected to the same LAN (Local Area Network) can now wirelessly play together.
- fter[sic] selecting Network Play, you can switch to LAN Play mode by clicking in the L Stick and pressing the L or R buttons.
- If the connection is unstable before Multiplayer Co-op or Multiplayer Versus starts, the match will be cancelled.
- In Multiplayer Co-op, when everyone chooses "Let's start over!", the timer will now be reset.
- Changed the look of the gauge for S+, the highest rank in Multiplayer Versus.
- If a player places Builder Boxes after a warp point, other players will now be able to break them and proceed forward.
- All players will take the same amount of time to move through a Warp Pipe, regardless of the state of their character.
- After updating to Ver. 1.1.0, you will no longer be able to match with players using Ver. 1.0.1 or lower in Network Play.
- Course Info
- You can now select Play Together directly from any course uploaded to a player's profile.
- Simplified the display of comments containing stamps in "View comments."
- Maker Profile
- Added a refresh/update button to "Courses uploaded."
- Added a list showing a user's 100 most recent First Clears.
- Now displays a user's total number of First Clears.
- Now displays a user's total number of world-record times.
- Official Makers
- Added a list of Official Makers in Leaderboards.
- Course Maker
- You can now use touch with button controls in handheld mode.
- You can also go back to touch-only controls from Settings in the Main Menu.
- General
- You can now play with a horizontal Joy-Con in all Game Modes.
- You can change your controller grip from Settings in the Main Menu.
- Other issues have been fixed to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.
Ver. 2.0.0[edit]
On December 2, 2020, an update titled "A Legendary Update" was revealed.[3][4] It was released on December 4, 2019.
The update adds several course parts:
- Spike
- Spike Ball (Snowball in the Snow course theme)
- Pokey (Snow Pokey in the Snow course theme)
- P Block
- Dash Block
- Frozen Coin
- Master Sword
In addition, the update adds Ninji Speedruns, a Course World mode in which players can compete on a global leaderboard and against Ninji Ghosts to complete courses built by Nintendo for the mode as fast as possible.
Ver. 3.0.0[edit]
On April 20, 2020, an update titled the "World Maker Update" was revealed.[5][6] The update, which was denoted as Super Mario Maker 2's "final major update", released on April 22, 2020.

In addition, the World Maker mode was added, allowing courses to be linked together into Super Worlds; multiple Super Worlds can be stored using Worldbot and one per Maker can be uploaded to Course World. In this update, the Spike Block course part was also recategorized from Terrain to Gizmos.
Ver. 3.0.1[edit]
An update was released on July 14, 2020. The following release notes were provided:

- When the player opens the pause menu while playing Ninji Speedruns, they will not be able to perform any actions for a certain period after closing the pause menu.
- General
- Issues have been fixed to make for a more pleasant gaming experience.
Ver. 3.0.2[edit]
An update was released on November 14, 2022. This update patches the ENLBufferPwn vulnerability, which enables attackers to remotely execute code on another player's console during a network multiplayer session.[7] As the vulnerability was present in Nintendo's shared game libraries, it affected many other first-party Nintendo games, such as Mario Kart 7.

Ver. 3.0.3[edit]
An update was released on February 6, 2024. The following release notes were provided:

Other changes[edit]
- On July 24, 2019, the Course World upload limit was increased from 32 courses to 64 courses.[8]
- On January 7, 2020, in celebration of 10 million courses being uploaded to Course World, the upload limit was increased to 100 courses.[9]
