"Nintendo 48-Hour Wii U Video Challenge - Coins" is a promotional short film published on the official Nintendo of America YouTube channel in 2013. The video was created as part of Nintendo's Wii U Video Challenge, a contest in which participants had to create a video themed after the additional modes in New Super Mario Bros. U in 48 hours or fewer. Entries were showcased at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. This short film serves as a skit themed after the Coin Battle mode in the game.

Synopsis[edit]

The video opens with an unnamed scientist telling a test subject that he was playing the Coin Battle mode in New Super Mario Bros. u. As he says this, the camera pans across a desk, which features various chemicals and devices, in addition to a Wii U GamePad and a Super Nintendo Entertainment System with a Super Mario World cartridge inserted. The scientist then states that he realized that one could greatly increase their wealth by bringing the coins from the game into the reality. His test subject says that this seems "impossible".

The scientist pulls out a copy of the game and states that realizing the coins is no longer impossible. The test subject touches one of the many things on the desk, to which the scientist slaps his hand away and tells him not to touch it. The scientist states that, due to New Super Mario Bros. U being in high-definition, he believes he will be able to transfer the coins into reality. His test subject questions how, to which the scientist responds that he will use "science". Following this, his test subject states that he doesn't think that this is going to work, and then acknowledges his role as a test subject. The scientist states "Let's begin", and then laughs in an evil manner.

The video then cuts to a burner being turned on, followed by a red liquid being placed on another burner, keys on a keyboard being pressed, and a dial being turned. The video then cuts to the scientist and the test subject looking at the liquid, with the test subject questioning if he is supposed to drink the liquid, and if coins will "shoot out" of his fingertips after doing so, netting them an infinite amount of gold. To this, the scientist says "That's the idea".

In the following scene, the two are walking along a path near a parking lot. The test subject states that, in the interest of safety, he thinks that it is better if they test the liquid in this area. He then drinks the liquid. As the scientist questions if he feels any way that would indicate the liquid being successful, the test subject states that he feels "hot". He then launches a fireball from his hand. The scientist then makes a log of this test into an audio recording device, stating that this test subject (whom he assigns the number "4-2" to) is experiencing "inflammatory behavior". As he speaks, the test subject lights a tree and some surrounding shrubbery on fire. He starts walking away, continuing to talk into the device, as the test subject questions how he can "turn off" this effect.

The video then cuts to a man on the phone looking at the tree and shrubbery that the man has set fire to, to which the man shrugs sheepishly. The video then cuts to the two in the scientist's laboratory again, with the scientist looking at a screen and spinning a lever. The test subject questions if he is sure that this mixture will have the desired effect, to which the scientist states that the mixture is much more precise than the previous one. The test subject mentions that he believes he may have set fire to a tree. The scientist confirms this, stating that it was "extraordinary". He then brings him the mixture, which he takes a red pill out of. As he does so, he asks the test subject if he would like to have more coins than he could conceive of.

The video then cuts to the two outside again. The test subject swallows the red pill, and then grows larger as if he were under the effects of a Super Mushroom. The scientist makes two puns about the situation, stating that this isn't a "big" deal and that the test subject should "grow" up instead of being "immature" about the situation. The scientist then makes a new, light-blue liquid. The man drinks the liquid outdoors again, and begins shivering. He then throws an Ice Ball and freezes the man who saw the tree he set fire to, who was walking by the testing area. He yells at the two to get him out of the ice, and begins attempting to break it from the inside. The scientist and the test subject run away.

The scientist then makes a yellow liquid. The man drinks this liquid while sitting on a bench, and becomes invincible. This excites the man. The scientist attempts to put his hand in the test subject's shoulder, but is knocked away due to the effects of the liquid. The scientist then creates another pill, this one being pink. The test subject takes the pill, and the camera pans over to the scientist, who begins taking off his glasses in shock. The camera pans back to the test subject, who is now wearing a princess costume due to the effects of the pill. To this, he simply says "No".

The video then cuts back to the two in the scientist's laboratory. The man is holding the red liquid they used initially, and appears to be using it as an ice pack for his face. The scientist states that he is certain he has the mixture perfected this time, and that he swears by "all of all of Olimar's Pikmin" that he and the test subject will find a way to realize coins. The test subject states that he doesn't think that this will work, and says to the scientist that sometimes, one has to say "Game Over" and go home. As he is finishing his sentence, the scientist puts on the pair of goggles resting on top of his head and sprays the man with his new mixture. The man begins coughing.

As the man attempts to catch his breath while leaning against the table, the scientist asks if the man is going to become something, then lists a flying squirrel, a frog, a penguin, and a tanooki as examples. The man then coughs out a coin, which he and the scientist stare at in shock. As the man's coughing becomes more intense, more and more coins fly out of his mouth, which excites the scientist. The video then cuts to the two walking down the street. The scientist is holding two full, shopping bags, while the man has his hand to his mouth and his other hand on his stomach.

The two enter a car dealership. The scientist asks what the most expensive car he can purchase with his coins is. The employee at the dealership asks the two if these are coins from the Super Mario franchise, to which the test subject says that they technically came from him. The employee tells the two that the dealership doesn't accept coins, and that "nobody takes coins". The two look to each other and walk offscreen. As they do so, the test subject questions what they are going to do with this amount of coins, to which the scientist sarcastically says that they could purchase an extra life. The test subject tells the scientist that this is the worst plan that the scientist has ever had.

Another man in a green shirt walks into the dealership, and asks what he can purchase for a large amount of rupees. The employee tells him that he could purchase any car on the lot with the amount of rupees that he has, which excites the man. A sound effect originating in the The Legend of Zelda series then plays, and the video displays a credits sequence.
