"Mario Tennis Open - Mario Hits the Court" is a video made to promote Mario Tennis Open published on Nintendo of America's official YouTube channel in 2012. In the video, Jessie Cantrell provides information pertaining to Mario Tennis Open, then later trains an actor in a full-body Mario costume to play tennis, due to Mario spent some time since he last played tennis and potentially feeling "out of shape" for a period prior to the video.

Synopsis[edit]

For the first 40 seconds of the video, Jessie provides information pertaining to Mario Tennis Open in the style of a news report. As she speaks, gameplay footage of the mode she is talking about is shown. Jessie first discusses the game's Tournament mode and provides a brief overview of what the mode entails, and then discusses the Super Mario Tennis and Galaxy Rally Special Games.

Jessie then states that, due to how excited she is for the game to be released, she "hit the actual courts" with "an old pal", who is later revealed to be Mario. The video then cuts to footage of Jessie on a tennis court speaking toward the camera, saying that she knows that Mario hasn't played tennis in a while. Jessie then offers to train Mario, and then pauses for a moment. Due to the actors portraying Nintendo characters in full-body costumes never speaking, she tells Mario to nod if he would like her to train him. Mario nods, in addition to giving a thumbs-up. Jessie then walks off-camera. Mario attempts to follow her, but ends up running into the net and has to turn in order to continue walking.

The video then cuts to a montage of Jessie training Mario. She first has him run while timing him with a stopwatch. Once he passes her, she looks at his time and sighs. She then serves multiple tennis balls to Mario, both of which he misses. When she serves the first tennis ball, Mario stands in one location and swings one of his arms at the ball. When she serves the second, she tells Mario to "run for it"; this time around, Mario does move, yet still ends up missing the ball. Jessie then guides Mario through the arm motions needed to hit a tennis ball.

Jessie then hands Mario a heavy yellow ball, which he drops after a few seconds. To this, she sighs. Jessie continues to guide Mario through the arm movements needed to hit a tennis ball, followed by footage of Mario standing with his head tilted downward after dropping the yellow ball while Jessie gives him a disappointed look. Footage is then shown of Mario continuing to miss the tennis balls that Jessie serves to him, to which she says he is "not even trying". Many tennis balls are on the floor in the background, suggesting that this has been occurring for some time.

Footage is then shown of Jessie jumping rope. The camera then pans over to Mario, who has gotten the jump rope stuck on his nose. To this, Jessie tells him to "just stop", as Mario was continuing to attempt to jump rope, despite the rope being stuck. Footage is then shown of Mario running past Jessie again. She makes a hand motion indicating that his time is okay, but not perfect. Footage is then shown of Mario doing squats while holding the yellow ball as Jessie coaches him. Footage is then shown of another tennis ball being served to Mario, to which Jessie says "slam it". Mario manages to hit three tennis balls in a row, to which Jessie gives Mario a high-five.

Footage is then shown of Mario running past Jessie, who indicates that his time is good. Following this, Mario serves multiple tennis balls back to Jessie, most of which she dodges. Following this, she ducks out of the frame. Mario and Jessie then run together, with Mario passing the finish point before Jessie. Jessie tells Mario that he's "getting too good". She then tells him that she has the "perfect opponent" for him, and that said opponent is already here. She asks Mario if he is ready, to which Mario nods. Jessie tells Mario that she is going to go get his opponent, and that Mario should get in position.

Western-style music then plays as Luigi walks onto the other side of the court. Luigi dances briefly, and then Mario serves the tennis ball.
