"Nintendo 3DS - Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon Poltergust 5000 Making of Video" is a video published on Nintendo of America's official YouTube channel in 2013. The video shows the making of a physical Poltergust 5000, which was used in a separate video and worn by an actor in a full-body Luigi costume.
Synopsis[edit]
The video is hosted by Jon, who works for the production studio "iam8bit", and Krysta Yang, a former public relations manager for Nintendo of America. Krysta says that a challenge was given to iam8bit to celebrate the release of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, this being to create a replica of the Poltergust 5000. The video then briefly cuts to gameplay footage showing the device being used. Jon then says that this was easier said than done, as the Poltergust 5000 has the additional functionality of being able to vacuum up ghosts in addition to crumbs. The video then cuts to gameplay footage showing the device being used a second time. The video then cuts to two pieces of concept art depicting the device, over which Jon narrates that creating the replica was a "highly custom job". The video then cuts to an image of a workbench with a calculator on it, followed by two more pieces of concept art on a measurement chart. Following this, a time-lapse is shown of the device being built, over which Jon narrates.
To build the device, an ordinary vacuum cleaner was placed in the center of a mold of the bottom of the device, followed by another plastic mold for the top of the device being place on top of it. Jon states that the replica had to be built around the vacuum's motor and internal parts. The vacuum's hose is then fashioned out of what appears to be wood, and then fastened to the body of the vacuum via multiple pipes. Jon then states that 20 stylized rings were added to the hose in order to give it a futuristic look. Following this, he suggests that the viewer count the rings, stating that "they're all there". Following this, backpack straps are fastened to the back of the replica. A red plastic mold is then placed over the top of the device. Jon then states that many details were added following this point, which includes a working green light on the front of the replica, wheels to improve the mobility of the replica, and a specially-created mouthpiece for the replica's hose, which Jon states is wide enough to "accept even the most pudgy spirit". The device is then painted to make it glossier.
Krysta then states that the finished replica looks very good, and that viewers should check back later to view how the finished replica turned out (presumably referring to the reveal video in which an actor in a full-body Luigi costume wears the replica). She then states that Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is now available.
