A shadow double,[1] also called a shadow character,[2] is a clone of any playable character in Mario Tennis Fever. The appearance of shadow doubles resembles the Small Cosmic Clones from Super Mario 3D Land, consisting of black bodies with purple rim lighting and yellow eyes, while their behavior resembles that of Cosmic Mario from Super Mario Galaxy. Shadow doubles appear in three different scenarios with slightly different mechanics in each, but they generally serve the purpose of providing an advantage in numbers to one side of the court.

The Shadow Racket's Fever Shot summons a temporary shadow double of the user on their side of the court. The shadow double acts on its own, moving around the court and returning shots without charging them. They cannot execute Fever Shots and always use the Shadow Racket as well.

In a Galaxy Court Match, one of the possible Prankster Comet effects can summon a shadow double on the court, where it is instead called a cosmic helper.[3] It behaves like the shadow double created by the Shadow Racket, except it lasts for the duration of the match and periodically changes sides. In doubles matches, two cosmic helpers are summoned.

Lastly, in the Trial Towers modes, a second player can play as a shadow character in order to help the first player. Their shadow character is always a clone of the first player's, but they only use their Personal Racket and cannot execute Fever Shots.
