Yoshi's Adventure is a slow moving ride that takes guests around the Super Mario Land area of Super Nintendo World to search for Captain Toad and the golden egg by using a map he left behind.[1] Guests travel in Yoshi-shaped vehicles, with a Yoshi's Egg–shaped vehicle being offered as a wheelchair-accessible option.[2] The ride is available only in Universal Studios Japan and Universal Epic Universe, where it has a historical average wait time of 58 minutes and 36 minutes, respectively.[3][4]

Location[edit]

The entrance to Yoshi's Adventure is a large yellow pipe located at foot of Mount Beanpole, at the center of Super Mario Land. It is an indoor and outdoor ride, going over a bridge towards the desert area to the right of the park's entrance, before looping back around over the entrance to Donkey Kong Country. The ride ends at the same location it begins, with guests leaving via a passage next to the entrance's pipe.

Ride queue[edit]

Universal Studios Japan[edit]

The queue for Yoshi's Adventure takes place entirely indoors, with most of it being composed of a single large room with a winding path going through it. It is themed around Yoshi's New Island, featuring various elements from its environments depicted in a crayon-like or handdrawn style. Objects from the Yoshi franchise such as Yoshi's Eggs, Egg Blocks, Message Blocks, Winged Clouds and Smiley Flowers appear throughout the queue, with some, such as a basket of fruits, being interactible with the use of a Power-Up Band. Other elements such as Super Pickaxes, Gift Boxes and a map to the golden egg can also be seen.[5]

At the end of the queue, before a set of stairs which leads to the boarding area, is a small house containing a screen with an animated video of Toadette. Toadette explains that Captain Toad left to explore Mount Beanpole in search of the golden egg, but forgot to take his map. She then goes on to explain that the map does not show the way to the golden egg, but instead shows the way to three glowing eggs. The guests are then tasked with finding the three glowing eggs, in the hopes of revealing the location of the golden egg, and with finding Captain Toad along the way.[1] Two Pikmin can be seen carrying a fruit on top of Toadette's house.

With the ride being on an endless transit system, vehicles never stop for boarding or disembarking. As such, a revolving floor on the loading area allows for guests to safely board the moving vehicles.

Universal Epic Universe[edit]

The queue for the ride in Universal Epic Universe has a different layout from the one in Universal Studios Japan. It is still comprised of the same elements, but the winding path is completely different. Toadette's house is also placed near the start of the queue, rather than at the end. Additionally, a screen is placed in the middle of the staircase leading to the boarding area, where Toadette explains the ride's gameplay.[6]

Universal Studios Hollywood[edit]

Despite not featuring the Yoshi's Adventure attraction, Universal Studios Hollywood incorporates a similar Yoshi-themed queue in the first section of the queue for Mario Kart: Bowser's Challenge.[7]

Gameplay[edit]

The objective of the ride is to find three glowing eggs (colored blue, green and red) placed along the track. Each seat in the vehicle comes equipped with three large buttons, each stamped with a glowing egg. If the guest has scanned a Power-Up Band and presses the correct buttons as the vehicle passes by all three eggs, they will find the golden egg and get its corresponding stamp. A sound cue by the Yoshi vehicle signals when a glowing egg is nearby. The ride lasts for approximately five minutes, and each vehicle can hold up to two people.[8]

Upon exiting the loading area, the ride first moves past a Piranha Plant before transporting guest over a bridge overlooking the central area of Super Mario Land. It passes past a Pokey, a Spiny, a Koopa Paratroopa and a Conkdor, with the green glowing egg being found here on top of a crate.

The ride then goes into a pipe tunnel. While in the tunnel, a branching pipe has a view out into space looking at Starship Mario. The pipe tunnel exits on an indoor night scene depicting Kamek and a pair of Fly Guys attempting to steal babies in the Mushroom Kingdom. Baby Mario and Baby Peach can be seen on the backs of a green and a pink Yoshi, respectively, while Poochy can be seen on the other side of the room. The blue glowing egg is found here, inside a sack carried by Kamek.

Entering another pipe, the vehicle arrives at an outdoor desert scene containing a Pokey, two cactuses and the final red glowing egg on top of another crate. The ride then moves onto a jungle area, located on top of the passage between Super Mario Land and Donkey Kong Country. Here, various Baby Yoshis can be found, including a Balloon Baby Yoshi, a Bubble Baby Yoshi and a Glowing Baby Yoshi from New Super Mario Bros. U. Captain Toad then stands at the end of the jungle, on top of a stump and holding the golden egg. The ride then goes past another Piranha Plant and the Piranha Plant from the beginning before going under a Thwomp and returning to the loading area.

Universal Epic Universe layout[edit]

The layout of the ride in Universal Epic Universe is largely the same as the one in Universal Studios Japan, with the placement of elements shifting around slightly. The green and red glowing eggs, instead of being on top of crates, are simply on the ground. A moving platform was added above the red glowing egg as well.

Music[edit]

Music that plays in the attraction includes the main level theme from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island in the queuing area, the main theme from Yoshi's Story at the bridge, the opening theme from Yoshi's Island in the tunnel, "Desert Theme" from New Super Mario Bros. Wii in the desert area, and "Captain Toad Goes Forth" from Super Mario 3D World in the jungle area.[5]

Notes[edit]

  • The design of the cactuses in the desert section of the ride at Universal Studios Japan appears to be based on the cactuses from the New Super Mario Bros. Wii ROM hack Newer Super Mario Bros. Wii, released in 2013.[15] On the ride's iteration at Universal Epic Universe, the cactuses have a different design.
