Get Disciplined!
Get Disciplined! is an online diary published on the official Nintendo of Canada website in 2004. The diary was maintained by Les, who used it to document his "video game training". He states in one of the first few entries that he will not play any video games until he is "132%" ready to play them. The diary was updated for 55 total days. In addition to the text-based portion of the diary, Les uploaded videos of his training to the website, which were supposedly shot by his cameraman Ernie. Many of the games Les trained for are part of the Super Mario franchise. Though the final update to the website was made 55 days after its creation, the website remains public.
Entries[edit]
- DAY 1[note 1]
- 21/04/04
- 10:14am
- Whoa. Okay that stuff last night doesn't make any sense. But I still had an epippiny[sic]:
- Today I'm starting a training program. It's Day 1 of my VIDEO GAMER TRAINING SESSIONS. I just called my bud Ralph to be my coach. He's gonna help prep me. By the time I finish, I will be 132% ready for video gaming. And I will not play until I'm 132% ready. Maybe 133%..
- From here on, I will not play a single video game until I have gone through my training and proven myself. Not a single video game. I won't even watch any. S'right.
- 21/04/04
It's 3:22am. Can't sleep. I've had an epiphany! It's time to take these games seriously.
- I'm gonna be an athlete. An ATHLETE! You win by being an athlete. This is AWESOME!!!
- Les: Superstar Video Game Athlete! Feels right.
- I'm tired. going to bed.
- 20/04/04
- That's it. I've had enuff. My roommates suck and I'm not playing anymore.
- Okay I gotta back up. My name is Les. I live with 3 other guys. Yesterday one of my roommates, Jason bought the new Nintendo game: WARIO WARE, Inc.: Mega Party Game$. In a word: KICK ASS! Me and my roommates played it ALL night. It's cool cuz you play these hyper microgames against your friends (or loser roommates) in head-to-head matches.
- Anyone tried it? I got some game footage here.
- So yeah the game totally ROCKS, the only problem is I suck at it. I never won a single match. Not one! How am I supposed to win if I can't prepare properly? I don't get it. There needs to be a way to get ready for the games for MAXIMUMIZING[sic] the Butt-Kick and decreasing the suckage!!!!
- DAY 2
- 22/04/04
- My first training session is for CUSTOM ROBO. That's the new game coming out May 12th. Ralph's helping me prepare myself mentally and physically for the challenge of playing the game. AND we're videotaping my training! It's all for you! We're gonna post the finished videos right here.
- Sign-up here and I'll send an email when I post them. Wish me luck!!! I'm not going to make the mistake I made with WARIO WARE, Inc.: Mega Party Game$. That game's got BUTT-KICK written all over it. (check my first entry below)
- DAY 24
- VIDEO NUMBER 2 IS HERE! Check out my newest training session for MARIO VS DONKEY KONG above. So we had a couple problems, but overall it's SA-WEET. I'm doing handstands bro.
- Have a look at some Mario vs Donkey Kong footage here.
- DAY 42 (later)
- Okay, ignore that last entry. I hadn't eaten yet. Must stay DISCIPLINED. Training is back on. And the next one is going to KICK. Me and my coach, Ralph, just started getting ready for MARIO GOLF: ADVANCE TOUR.
- DAY 47
- As usual, here is some game footage from MARIO GOLF: ADVANCE TOUR. And as usual, the game's got Butt-Kick! But I won't play until I am READY
- DAY 51
- Have been training all day. Am feeling the discipline. I haven't thought about playing any video games once, well except right now when I just wrote that.
- Okay, now I AM thinking about playing video games. But that's just because I wrote that sentence. I'm going out to practice more golf.
Video synopses[edit]
Mario vs. Donkey Kong[edit]
Les starts the video by stating that it has been 24 days since he has played any video games. He holds up a yellow sign showing this. He states that one does not become a "world-class video game athlete" by playing the game, and that they must first "master" the game. Les takes a purple yoga mat outside, and states that he plans to "master" Mario's handstand ability. He attempts to do a handstand, and falls over. A short series of clips showing Les repeatedly falling over while attempting to handstand are then shown, culminating in what initially appears to be a clip of him successfully handstanding, though the camera cuts to Ralph holding him up by the legs. The video then shows Les doing a handstand unaided for a moment, though he still falls over. He states that progress is being made. He states that he will next try to deflect objects with his feet while doing a handstand. Ralph throws various objects at him, including a cinder block, a beach ball, and a tire as he balances. The video briefly cuts to gameplay footage from Mario vs. Donkey Kong in the form of an advertisement, followed by a cut back to Les buried under a series of objects.
Mario Golf: Advance Tour[edit]
The video begins with Les stating that he has not played any video games in 55 days. He then holds up the same yellow sign from the previous video, though with new text reflecting the date and the game he will be "training" for. He then states that nobody becomes a "world-class video game athlete" by simply playing Mario Golf: Advance Tour. As he says this, footage of people playing the game on Game Boy Advance SPs is shown. Footage of Les swinging a golf club is shown, as he states that being a "world-class video game athlete" takes "hours" of practice with real golf clubs. A man is shown timing Les with a stopwatch as he practices. Les is then shown with multiple blades of grass in his hand, as he states that "it just comes down to that one moment". He then attempts to swing the club at a golf ball, and accidentally throws the club instead. A brief advertisement for Mario Golf: Advance Tour is then shown, followed by footage of Les checking on the cameraman and stating he is fine, and then stating that he wants to try that a second time.
