mario.nintendo.com (originally known as Mario's World[1]) is a website launched by Nintendo of America in 2004. The website serves as the official website of the Super Mario franchise and has been branded as "Nintendo's official home for Mario".[2] The site is typically formatted as a unique domain containing information about Mario, though it has been repurposed for an extended period into a New Super Mario Bros.—specific microsite.

History[edit]

Initial design[edit]

Homepage

The site was launched toward the end of 2004 under the name "Mario's World". The site featured artwork of Mario leaning against his emblem, which featured links to subsections of the site. Out of all of the subsections, only two appear to have been archived. The first subsection featured "Hot Titles", thus presumably containing a list of popular Super Mario titles. The second subsection, titled "Mariohistory"[sic], contained an abridged history of Mario's appearances in video games, in addition to commentary for each period. The section covered arcade titles, Nintendo Entertainment System titles, and each subsequent system up to the Nintendo DS. The site also features graphics depicting various pieces of artwork of Mario from different periods, which are also captioned. One of these pieces originates in Saturday Supercade, and features a caption that references The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! and the 1993 Super Mario Bros. film.

The third section featured wallpapers for users to download. These were typically game-specific, with Mario Kart: Double Dash!! featuring three wallpapers, though two of the wallpapers appear to have been designed specifically for the site and are not themed after any single game in particular. The games with available wallpapers are Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, Mario Pinball Land, Mario Power Tennis, Super Mario 64 DS, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

The fourth section functioned as a forum, though it has not been archived. Similarly, a "current titles" section and The Mario Newsletter were linked to from the site's main page, though none of these sections have been captured.

Second design[edit]

The site was modified in early 2006 to be themed after New Super Mario Bros. The initial design for the site simply featured a series of wallpapers for users to download,[3] though it was later redesigned a second time to be an Adobe Flash—based microsite. All of its content was also accessible from newsupermariobrosds.nintendo.com.

Said microsite featured sections discussing the game's features, such as its worlds, its power-ups, a section covering the Mario Vs. Luigi multiplayer mode, a section where users could download wallpapers, icons, printables, and skins for Windows Media Player, and a strategy section. The strategy section allowed users to click-and-drag across four of the game's levels, specifically World 1-2, World 1-Castle, World 4-1, and World 6-2 Though the section does not appear to completely function within web captures, tips would presumably be provided to the player (with the tips possibly changing depending on where the user dragged to within the level).

Within the website's "downloads" section, users could download various wallpapers themed after the game in various sizes. 13 wallpapers were available, as well as one bonus wallpaper. Participants could also download sticker sheets that they could then print, in addition to clothing iron-ons. Ten different animated "buddy icons" were also available for download.

This version of the website persisted until early 2012.

Third design[edit]

In early 2012, the website was redesigned again. This design would persist in some form until 2018. This version of the site simply contained a list of Super Mario games available to purchase, in addition to links to either their official websites or their page on nintendo.com. The site listed games available on the Wii, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, and the Virtual Console. In addition, a section at the bottom of the site titled "Mario Activities" contained links to the Adobe Flash games Mario Memory and Mario Trivia. The Virtual Console section was eventually removed, and a banner featuring links to official websites for Super Mario games and a section for Nintendo Switch games were later added.

Fourth design[edit]

The site was redesigned again in 2018. This version of the site functioned as a combination of the site's previous and most recent designs. The site's homepage featured various "featured" Super Mario games, in addition to "featured" Super Mario amiibo and links to various Play Nintendo activities. Three subsections were available on the site, the buttons for which were placed on Warp Pipes.

The first subsection featured details about Mario, in addition to pieces of artwork pertaining to each set of details. The first set of details listed were Mario's "skills", which included the various moves he is able to do in Super Mario games. The second section featured various power-ups Mario has been able to use, in addition to an in-game image shown in the shape of the power-up in question. The third section featured a list of the various sports Mario has played, each of which is emblazoned on a moving Semisolid Platform. The fourth and fifth subsections feature artwork of Mario's allies and enemies, respectively.

The second subsection featured each game in the Super Mario series that has been released. Clicking on one of the games brings up a window with an in-game screenshot, the game's story as written in the instruction booklet (when applicable), and a Note Block that plays a theme from the game when clicked on. Clicking on the Note Block a second time stops the music.

The third subsection featured descriptions for various Super Mario characters upon clicking on their respective pop-up buttons. The artwork shown for each character changes upon clicking on said button. In addition to the provided descriptions, three soundbites for each character are available to play via Note Blocks. Elements of the following design (such as the "featured amiibo" section) were added to the site around 2019.

Fifth design[edit]

The site was redesigned again toward the end of 2020 for the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary event. The site featured links to various Super Mario news stories on nintendo.com, a timeline of Super Mario games (which initially allowed readers to download an image of the game if it was their favorite Super Mario game), a Super Mario Maker 2 online challenge, and various My Nintendo missions. Additionally, on the home menu, clicking on various dates listed in a timeline format would change the banner image to be themed to the Super Mario game released that year.

In the history section, the ability to play a theme from the game in question remained, though the visual aspect of clicking on a Note Block to play the song was removed. Additionally, a quiz (titled It's Mario Quiz time!) was published on the site. Taking the quiz was initially a My Nintendo mission, though the quiz was kept after the Super Mario Bros. 35th Anniversary event concluded. As of June 2026, the quiz appears to have been removed from the main page of the website. However, it is still accessible by visiting the link directly.

The "rewards" section on the My Nintendo portion of the website simply featured details on pins and one Super Mario sweepstakes. The "missions" section featured a series of unique challenges, all of which are listed below.

The site was later reformatted slightly, with the unique missions removed. A similar section about Super Mario characters is available, though formatted as a slider instead of having all of the characters on the same page. All of the same sections have generally been kept, though the site is currently themed after the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary.
