The Dan Report is an article on the official Nintendo website. The article is focused on the 1999 iteration of Space World, with Dan Owsen discussing the various games on display at the show. This includes three games in the Super Mario franchise, specifically Donkey Kong 64, Mario Party 2, and Paper Mario (referred to as Super Mario RPG 2), the last of which received a dedicated "First Impressions" page.

Portions relating to the Super Mario franchise[edit]

Judging from the reactions of the players, Donkey Kong 64 looks like another hit. Even though the version on display was from E3, it was new to the Japanese players, and they were eating it up. Of course, it helped that they had a high-energy stage show going on near the gameplay stations. Dancers rocked out to the DK rap, and brought along their own mix-master who appeared to actually be working the turntables with real vinyl. In another segment, a super-energetic MC gave the play-by-play as contestants went head-to-head in a mine- cart[sic] challenge. After the show, the Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong characters were mobbed by the little kids in the audience. Watch out guys, those costumes are expensive! (Twenty thousand bananas each, to be exact.)
To your right you'll see a list of my exclusive previews of hot titles, but there's a lot more to see at Space World! Mini Racers, Excitebike 64 and Mario Party 2 all looked good but the proof is in the playing (especially titles like Mini Racers and Excitebike 64 in which play control is key). I'll have more on those, and the hot licensee titles that were on display, in my Space World wrap-up report.

Super Mario RPG 2 "First Impressions" page[edit]

Based on a handful of screen shots, a lot of reviewers and game fans have slammed Super Mario RPG 2 for its unique mix of 2-D and 3-D graphics. The combination may seem a bit unusual, but once you see it in action, it works. Though characters in Super Mario RPG 2 are flat as a pancake - no, a piece of paper - they have TONS of animation. Because of the great variety of things they can do, they resemble little living cartoons inside a three-dimensional world. And even though they are flat, they can still morph and twist in humorous ways.
Mario teams up with a veritable rogues gallery of his old foes - a Goomba, a Bob-omb and a Koopa Troopa - in his quest to, yes, rescue the Princess. Well, with a Mario game it's not where you're going, it's how you get there that makes the fun. It looked like there would be a lot of fun in this adventure too, with plenty of minigames and side quests. I would recommend that all the critics of this game hold your judgement until you've had a chance to experience it!
