Chapter 1[edit]
One day, Mario receives an unexpected visit: an ape named Funky Kong land with his barrel-shaped plane in front of his house. He asks if he is talking to "The Mariow"[A] as he has been summoned to Donkey Kong Island. Before Mario can even correct him on his name, Funky grabs him and takes off to the paceful island of the South. But the island is anything but peaceful these days, as the plane is targetted by cannonballs upon its arrival: a cruel gang of pirate lizards, the Kremlings, has been attacking the island. After dodging the cannon shots, the plane lands on the ground, in front of a cabin from which an elderly ape emerges, happy to see Mario again. Mario asks if they have met before and the ape presents himself as the aged up Donkey Kong Snr., now going by the title of Cranky Kong after Junior inherited the "DK" title. Mario enjoys some tea served by DK's girlfriend, Candy Kong, who flusters him with her compliments about his adventures and her alluring figure, while also wearing a veil that covers her mouth.
Meanwhile, Donkey Kong, accompanied by his trusty steed Rambi, arrives to the cabin, climing that he does not need any help in fighting the Kremling Krew, but Cranky remarks that he cannot only rely on his muscles and that Mario can be of great help. Just then, the Kremling Krew breaches into the Kong's base by blowing up the defensive wall, and with that a sentrypost where one of the Kongs, Diddy, was stationed. While DK and Rambi take care of the Kritters and Klumps invading the base, the group leader, the giant Very Gnawty, grabs Diddy Kong and orders the Kong to surrender their Giant Bananas at once. Cranky demands to know how the Kremling Krew discovered about the Giant Bananas when a disheveled-looking Kong suddenly appears behind Very Gnawty: Manky Kong. After being exiled from Donkey Kong Island for being too violent on a raft, he was picked up by the Krew and sold them valuable information in return for an opportunity to seek revenge. Not wanting to risk the life of Diddy, Cranky takes the Kremlings to their Giant Banana tree: a gift from Dr. Mario, the tree allowed the Kong to not have to worry about food.
As the Kremlings prepare to take away the tree, DK, who did not cease his attacks, has just managed to break their ship. Angry, most of the Kremlings chase Donkey Kong, who flees with Rambi, while Manky decides with Very Gnawty to set a base while they wait for the fleet to come and take them. As Manky and the Kremlings take the Giant Banana tree to the mountain, Very Gnawty stuffs Cranky, Funky, and Diddy inside some barrels. He then directs his lustful attention to Candy. Mario tries to protect her, but Very Gnawty tosses a Slippa at him. Surprised and trapped in his coils, Mario accidentally backs up and falls off a cliff. Fortunately for him, he lands in DK's arms, referring to him that Candy is in peril, so DK rushes Rambi back to the base. As they arrive, they see Very Gnawty attempting to force a kiss on Candy. Unable to charge at him with Rambi's horn in time, DK grabs Mario and hurls him at Very Gnawty, but ends up overshooting. Before he can land, the barreled-up Kongs roll in position, allowing Mario to bounce off them, confusing Very Gnawty and landing a punch that sends him into the sea.
While DK laments his failed throw, Candy removes her veil to reward Mario with a kiss for his bravery, but Mario can now see her not-so-good-looking giant lips and snout and runs away in fear. Meanwhile, a couple of Klumps have witnessed the confrontation and, using a radio, they inform their supreme leader, who is arriving with a giant fleet from their home island. Surprised to hear of Very Gnawty's defeat, the leader sends over reinforcements, in the form of Master Necky and Queen B.
Chapter 2[edit]
マリオ・ドンキー・ディディー
Continuing from last chapter. Cranky asks "Mariow" to help them retrieve the Giant Banana tree from the Kremling. Mario accepts the mission and, acompanied by Diddy Kong, he begins to chase the reptile pirates to Monkey Mines. Donkey Kong, instead, decides to deal with the situation on his own accord and, after taking a tire and Rambi, goes on his way. After their departure, the Kong at the base sees an ominous sign in the form of a murder of crows flying away. Worried, Cranky, Candy, and Funky decide to go and help them.
Mario and Diddy arrive at Winky's Walkway. In response to the question about who Winky is, Diddy points to a crate, and Mario opens it, revealing a giant frog inside. Warned about the island crisis, Winky tells the two to hop on his back, while he will take them to the other side of the cave, where they can find a Mine Cart to use to continue. Suddenly, the walkway beneath them collapses and the three fall down. Luckily for them, Donkey Kong arrives at the bottom and places the tire. Winky, Mario, and Diddy bounce off it and land safe and sound back to the walkway, right by the Mine Cart. Just as they are about to jump in it, a Gnawty on a millstone appears and rolls towards them.
Scared, the three jump in the cart to escape the stone wheel. As Mario screams in fear at the sight of an incoming gorge where the mine cart tracks stop, Winky uses his legs to make the mine cart jump to the other side of the pit, while the Gnawty is not as lucky. Mario sighs in relief but slams his head on a lower ceiling and falls unconcious. Right then, Master Necky and his army of Mini-Neckys appear. Master Necky spits a giant Coconut at the Mine Cart, causing it to fall off the tracks and deeper into the mines. Just then, Donkey Kong arrives and defeats the Neckys by closing Master Necky's beak with the tire and by striking all of the Mini-Neckys' coconuts back at them. Meanwhile, Mario, Diddy, and Winky wake up and get surrounded by Zingers. Mario and Diddy use some rocks to break their stingers, but are aware they cannot continue defending like that for longer, so Winky takes on them by using his bloated throat as a barrier, telling the two to continue without him.
Without their frog companion, Diddy and Mario arrive at the Kremling's base, where the Giant Banana tree was taken. Manky Kong steps forward to fight the two, but DK and Rambi also arrive and the former picks up Manky's challenge and beats him up. As the Kremling starts to get worried, the giant Queen B. appears. With everyone distracted by her arrival, Manky Kong gets up and restrains DK in a chokehold to allow Queen B. to stab him with her stinger, which carries a poison 100 times more powerful than a normal Zinger. As Queen B. charges at DK, Mario and Diddy attack Manky from behind, causing him to release DK and to be stung in his place. Next, DK, Diddy, and Mario throw rocks at Queen B., breaking all of her spikes and killing her. Just then, Cranky and the others arrive in time to see Mario put down Queen B., complimenting him and, once again, DK's efforts are ignored. Just then, Mario, Diddy, and DK collapse while holding their stomachs in pain.
Chapter 3[edit]
The heroic trio is revealed to be suffering from hunger, so Candy offers some of her melons and Cranky his lunch box to Diddy and Mario, while DK (once again ignored by his gang) resorts to quench his hunger thanks to Rambi bringing him some hay. Meanwhile, the Kremlings took the opportunity to escape with the Giant Banana tree to the mountain top, coming across the lab of Dr. Mario. The reptiles barge in and, ignoring the warnings of the scientist, they knock down various tables and potions. Two potions come in contant and, much to Dr. Mario and his assistants Expresso and Squawks' horror, they explain the mixing these two concotions will result in the weather drastically changing. In fact, the mountaintop of the tropical island is hit by a violent snow storm.
DK and Rambi, who were already moving to the next destination, are hit by the storm and Rambi ends up freezing in a block of ice, forcing DK to continue alone. Cold and hungry, DK sees some bananas floating in front of him and walks towords them, and ends up falling into a trap set up by Manky Kong (healed and patched up by the Kremlings) and falls and sinks in a sludge swamp. Meanwhile, Mario and the rest of the Kongs arrive to the mountain region and take shelter in a cave, where they find Dr. Mario and his pet-assistants. He explains the situation and that, at the end of the icy tunnel, they will arrive to his research facility. He also entrusts them with Expresso and Squawks as guides.
Guided by Squawks' lantern, the group arrive in a cave with strange rocks, which are revealed to be camouflaging Rock Krocs. They throw Mincers at the group, but they end up hindering each other, clogging the passage without hurting the party. Sneaking between the gaps, Mario and Diddy pass through the Mincers and defeat the Rock Krocs by throwing stones at them. After helping the others get through, they arrive at the research labs. Due to the cold weather, the Kremlings begin to go into hibernation and slowly go to sleep inside some barrels, while Manky Kong is left to face the heroes' party alone. Manky makes a run towards the Giant Banana tree room and, while he manages to distance them, the heroes are catching up thanks to Expresso's legs and wings.
In a panic, Manky calls for his boss through a telephone, asking for reinforcements. Just then, a giant black drum appears, from which a multitude of Armies come out. Surprised by that, the heroes fail to notice Manky Kong sneaking behind them, allowing him to take Candy Kong hostage. Just then, DK emerges from the sludge surrounding the area: having managed to grab one of the banana baits, DK has regained his strength and swam back the drainpipe to reach the lab. Scared, Manky Kong lets Candy go and climbs up the Giant Banana tree, ordering the Armies to eliminate the enemies. The Armies ball up and roll towards the heroes, but DK does the same, asking Cranky for a push. Using his cane as a pool table stick, Cranky helps DK perform a Roll Attack which gets rid of the Armies and destroys the black drum. Before they can celebrate their victory, the Giant Banana tree takes off, moved by telekinesis, and flies off to the sea with Manky Kong still hanging on it. Going out to check, the heroes witness the tree landing on the command ship of the Kremling Krew's fleet that has just arrived, finally laying eyes on the leader of the pirate gang: King K. Rool.
Chapter 4[edit]
ドンキー
Scared at the sight of the giant fleet, Cranky already thinks of the worse, while Funky grabs his surfboard and goes towards the ship. His attempt is stopped when multiple Master Neckies pops from behind the small ships' sails and attacks him with coconuts, causing him to fall off the board and sink. As the group is starting to lose hope, the Animal Friends arrive, ready to help: with Dr. Mario now able to stop the snow storm, Rambi woke up from his hibernation and knocked the barreled Kremlings inside the sludge swamp, while Winky took care of the Zingers by eating them. Another companion also arrives, Enguarde the Swordfish, who picks up Funky Kong. With their combined help, Mario, DK, Diddy, Funky, each riding an Animal Friend, swim towards the main ship, the Gangplank Galleon.
K. Rool summons his aquatic soldier to stop them: a Chomps, a Croctopus, a Squidge, and a Clambo, but the gang quickly takes care of them. He then orders the Master Neckies to attack them, but they hesitate. As Mario approaches, he uncovers the trick: the entire small fleet and Master Neckies are merely cardboard cutouts, with cannons that are manually reloaded by Gnawties. As the heroes destoy each ship, K. Rool is left with the Gangplank Galleon (the only real ship), Manky Kong, and his second-in-command Krusha. The latter proposes to surrender the Giant Banana tree and retreat, but K. Rool refuses, worried that doing so will make him a forgettable villain, and his reptilian design is not helping seeing how similar he is to Bowser and Wart.
Mario and Kongs finally board the Gangplank Galleon. Left alone, K. Rool feigns to surrender, only to quietly release the Klap Traps. As they jump at the heroes, Rambi breaks the mast onto them, trapping the Klap Traps under the sail, followed by Expresso stomping on them. Sick and tired of him, DK delivers a powerful punch to K. Rool's face, knocking him down, but also revealing him to be Manky Kong and Krusha in a costume. The real King K. Rool emerges from under the deck, growing in size after eating one of the Giant Bananas, as they decuplicate his strength. Mario and the Kongs throw barrels at him, but it is useless. After knocking out Funky, Expresso, and Rambi with his crown, K. Rool uses his powers to summon a cursed steel keg to trap DK inside. Just as he is about to give up, Enguard carries Candy to the ship, where she encourages DK. Finally acknowledged by his girlfriend, DK prevents K. Rool from dropping the barrel on him. Meanwhile, Mario and Diddy hop on Winky, he then jumps high, so Mario jumps off him, reaching K. Rool's head height and throws Diddy at him. Kicked in the face, K. Rool drops the grip on the barrel and DK directs it against him, trapping him inside the keg.
After shutting the lid, DK throws the keg into the sea and K. Rool is history. As the Giant Banana tree is brought back to Donkey Kong Island, DK proposes to Candy with a pearl necklace made of Clambo's pearls. With the situation resolved, Mario is ready to return home to Princess Peach, but Funky has some bad news: his Jumbo Barrel was damaged and he cannot bring him back home, much to Mario's dismay.
Mototin's Picture Diary/Go! Go! Mario Paint Theater[edit]

Mario and his friends read some mail sent by the fans.
First off is「
Luckily for Peach, the next sender is a fan of her:「小池画留」(Koikega Tome) from Chiba Prefecture, who recently found a game starring her in a thrift store: Miss Peach World. The Mario Bros. are confused by this and, after a bit of researching, it turns out that the game is a reskinned version for Asian territories of a Nintendo Entertainment System game not published by Nintendo titled Menace Beach.
Yoshi's letter comes from「るいじ」(Ruiji) from Gifu Prefecture: he laments how the nearby libraries do not sell more copies of KC Mario and had to look up and down for a copy of Super Mario World! Yoshi no Tamago. This shocks Mario, but does explain that he can order a copy through the contacts present in the BomBom and KC Deluxe magazines.
In the last page, two manga artists, Ikehara Shikato and Hoshino Ryuichi, criticize Motoyama's latest works and how he is losing touch, especially considering how he made a chapter dedicated to Mario Paint without anything related to the game. In response, Mototin 2-gō shows them a letter from「ピーチ媽」(Pīchi Mā) from Suita in Osaka Prefecture:
いつも思うのだけど、本山センとのコンがて、 ほかのマンガ家の人がかくより、なんてゆーか、見やすいってゆーのかなぁほかのマンガ家の人の絵ってゆーのは、ういてるかんじがするんです。 でも本山センとのは、ほかと少~~しちがうょーに見えんのね
I always think this, but Motoyama-sensei's style is, how should I put it, easier to look at than other manga artists' drawings. Other manga artists' drawings feel out of place. But Motoyama-sensei's style looks just a little bit different from the others.
He concludes the chapter by stating that his manga follows three principles: easy to read, easy to understand, and funny. And kids quickly grasped these standards.
Cameos and caricatures[edit]
Real people[edit]
- Tomiichi Murayama: when seeing Cranky Kong for the first time, Mario asks Funky if he is the monkey counterpart of the Japanese Prime Minister at the time.
Other games[edit]
- Menace Beach: in the Mario Paint chapter, Peach's letter sender asserts that they have discovered a game featuring her. The game in question is the Asian reskin of Menace Beach, one of the few NES games not to be licensed by Nintendo that included some mature content. The Asian reskin, titled Miss Peach World, changed the protagonist to a girl with a similar name and design to Peach, complete with her own plumber-like hat in the artwork.
