Chapter 1

いのちぎりぎりフライングバトルのまき (A life-threatening flying battle volume)

As Mario and Yoshi are approaching Float Castle, Bowser is growing nervous, Roy prepares for the imminent battle, and Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad finally spots them. As they enter, Roy shoots Bullet Bills and Koopa Shells (one of which falls by Wendy, which she uses to cover herself) at them, but Mario manages to shoots all of them. Roy runs at his mecha, while King Fret and Prince Pine attempt to sneak out, but Bowser manages to stop the prince, letting the King escape. He then climbs up to the top of the palace with his hostage, chased by Mario, and once he gets cornered, Roy arrives with his armed hot-ait balloon. Roy gets the upperhand and Mario and Yoshi falls down the tower. Roy celebrates, but get distracted when he spots the King Fret free, allowing Mario to take him down his airship. While Mario unties the king, Bowser jumps in Roy's hot-air balloon and shoots Float Castle down. As Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Wendy sees the heroes and the King falling do their doom, the Koopaling yells at Mario to use the magic gem. Mario grab the blue one and puts it in Yoshi's mouth, bestowing him with wings.

Back on the attack, Mario, Winged Yoshi, and Fret chase Bowser, but he uses Pine as a shield to prevent Mario from shooting him. Calculating his next shot, Mario shoots at the balloon, piercing it and making it fly away, while Pine falls from Bowser's clutches and is rescued by Yoshi. The heroes land safely to the ground and join their friends (and Wendy). Hugging them, Mario drops the Super Scope, and when Bowser climbs out from the sea where he fell, he takes it and points it at Mario (to which, Wendy goes behind her father). Bowser pulls the trigger, but nothing happens (and Wendy join back the heroes): Mario removes the weapon from his claws, explaining that he turned it off.

Bowser accepts defeat and escorts the group to the cave where the last five magic gems are stored, on top of a crown-shaped pedestal. Peach goes to collect them, but Fret screams her to not touch them, but it is too late: Peach takes one of the gems out of the pedetal and a strange earthquake shakes the region. Fret explains that Jewelry Land is a particular kingdom: the magic gems sustain the Light Realm, but at least five of them are necessary, with less gems, the Light Realm will be overwhelmed by the Dark Realm, a distorted dimension where the darkness prevails. Hearing this, Bowser steals all five of the gems, takes Prince Pine again, and runs out. The heroes (and Wendy) follow him, only to be left awestruck by the sight of the Dark Realm, allowing Bowser to escape.

Chapter 2[edit]

Chapter 2

こころドキドキ霊感れいかんアタックのまき (Heart-pounding psychic attack volume)

In this new distorted and deserted version of Jewelry Land, in which even the writing on their clothing are reversed, the heroes, Fret, and Wendy (who was left behind) do not know where to proceed. Magikoopa appears, but before Mario can beat any information out of him, he grows bigger: in a world were every rule is inverted, now the enemies are able to power-up. Avoiding his explosive magic rays, Mario grabs the Super Scope and tries to shoot him down, but the Scope is now hard to aim with, as the user's dominant hand has been switched to the left, and to mock him further, Magikoopa teleports all over the place. When he then cackles that Mario will have an hard time adjusting to a weapon for left-handed, but Mario fixes it by repositioning the sight, and shoots the wizard down, obtaining another magic gem.

As the heroes continues on their journey, Magikoopa turns into a Boo, an positions himself in Mario Cap. This causes Mario to suddenly feel cold. Just as suddenly, a woman warns him that this is the sign of a curse, due to all the enemies he killed. Peach identifies the woman as Aiko Gibo, a renowned Japanese celebrity psychic. Mario refuses the idea of being cursed, but start changing his mind when a bird defecates on him and a giant Chargin' Chuck is dashing towards him, with the intention of eating him. Hiding behind a barricade, Mario loses the enemy, but he then starts to chase Luigi, Peach, and Toad. Aiko offers her services again, but Mario is still refusing, but admits his neck is getting heavier and heavier. Using her flashing crystal ball, Aiko reveals Magikoopa's ghost, who is absorbing more and more spirits of fallen enemies to squash Mario under his huge size. Stunned by the light, the Magikoopa-Boo attempts to curse Mario again, while he tries to shoot him down, but as an incorporeal entity, all projectiles pass harmlessly through him, and even kill some enemies in the distance, giving the ghost more power from the new souls.

Peach, Luigi, and Toad do not make the situation better, by running over enemies to escape the Chuck, creating more spirits to fuel the Magikoopa Boo, but they come across a Jūtendō Shop, buy three Super Scopes, and shoots down the Chuck, obtaining another gem. The Chargin' Chuck soul enters the Big Boo, so Aiko comes with a solution: shooting her crystal ball in his mouth, to purify all souls from inside. Hearing her, the Magikoopa Boo shuts his mouth, while approaching Mario and Yoshi to absorb them. The two start to make various faces to make him laugh, but the Boo proceeds unfazed by their attempt, until Yoshi pees himself from fear, causing the Boo to chuckle, giving Mario an opening to shoot the Crystal Ball in his mouth. The Big Boo implodes, leaving behind another magic gem, and all the souls can finally rest in peace.

Meanwhile, while roaming in the Dark Realm, Wendy finds Bowser's Castle, but inside she hears his fatherr oredering Dr. Mario Nakamatsu to build him a turtle tank. The doctor refuses, and even his granddaughter Kinoppe pleads him to not fall for Bowser's threats, but he then promises to turn Kinoppe's face into Wendy's. Scared by such image, the doctor gives in. As Bowser laughs victoriously, Wendy glares at him for using her face as a threat.

Chapter 3[edit]

Chapter 3

あたまくらくらよん連装れんそうカメ砲台ほうだいまき (Dizzying Kame Hōdai volume)

Sneaking inside the castle, Wendy waits for her father to fall asleep and then frees Kinoppe, telling her to stop her grandfather from completing the machine, while she will cover her escape. Kinoppe tries, but Dr. Nakamatsu is too fired up into creating the machine to the point of ignoring his granddaughter. Later, when Aiko is unable to help them without her crystal ball, Mario and Yoshi are reunited with Kinoppe, escaped from the fortress via a flying Question Block. While still deliberating if they are talking to the real Kinoppe and not another of Wendy's tricks, the group is approached by a slow-thinking Sledge Brother, who accidentally blocks his fellow Hammer Brothers and Lakitu attempts at bombing Mario, and the explosion indicates to Luigi, Toad, and Peach, armed with a barrage of Super Scope, their position. With the help of Kinoppe, who illustrates the Dash Zones and jump zones, Mario eliminates the bombing enemies, only to discover that he has one bullet left in the Super Scope.

After leaving the Sledge Brother behind, Mario, Yoshi, and Kinoppe arrive at the Dark Sea, where the new complete mecha by Dr. Nakamatsu awaits: the Kame Hōdai: a giant tutrtle-shaped submarine tank, with multiple cannons. To avoid the cannons, Kinoppe suggesting using a reverse Dash Zone, but in doing so, Kinoppe falls off from Yoshi's back, making her an easy target for the Kame Hōdai. Mario jumps off from Yoshi too to take the bullet for her, collapsing to the ground. The Koopa Troopas manouvering the tank celebrate in victory, but Mario gets up, having fake being defeated, and with a Super Jump from the jump zone, he takes down the control dome of the tank from above.

Now the heroes celebrates, but Kinoppe warns them: now the still fired-up Dr. Nakamatsu is controlling the Kame Hōdai from the exposed shell and, with just one shot, he destroys the Super Scope, too blinded to realize he is on the wrong side. Kinoppe tries to reason with him, by shielding Mario and Yoshi, and the doctor hesitates. Only then Bowser, having woken up with the tank's explosion, notices Wendy, poorly disguises as Kinoppe, in her cell. Peach and the others arrive, with a wheelbarrow with five spare Super Scopes that Mario uses to fire multiple shots at once, blowing up the Kame Hōdai, while Yoshi uses his prehensile tongue to save Dr. Nakamatsu and the penultimate magic gem. The doctor comes to his senses, and the last place to check in the whole Dark Realm is Bowser's Castle. The final battle is approaching.

Chapter 4[edit]

Chapter 4

根性こんじょうバリバリ最終さいしゅう決戦けつせん!!のまき (Great battle at the Ice Mountain volume)

Mario demands that Bowser set Prince Pine free and he concedes, but only if Mario hands over the eleven magic gems he has gathered. Mario obliges, but as Bowser puts his hands on the bags with the gems, he pulls Pine back into the palace. As Mario boils in anger, Dr. Nakamatsu pulls out the Ultra Super Scope for Mario and an RC armor for Yoshi. The two enter, and when Luigi and the others attempts to follow them, the castle door closes behind the two. Inside, Mario and Yoshi are ambushed by the bandaged-up Koopalings, including Wendy (forced to help her family), which unleash an army of Mechakoopas against them. Controlling Yoshi, Dr. Nakamatsu makes him run past the robots but loses control and Yoshi and Mario fall into a pit, where they meet again with movie Yoshi, turned into a wild beast by the Dark Realm's effect. The two Yoshis start fighting and Mario is told to continue alone.

Bowser first sends two Firesnakes against Mario, but he swiftly defeats them. In a dark room, Mario comes face to face with Bowser, wearing the last standing mecha armor: the Koopa Mecha. Dodging a ray from the Koopa Mecha, Mario drops his weapon and cannot find it in the dark, succumbing to the enemy's rays, capitalizing on the shadows with the help of the infrared visor. Still watching them from the camera system, the group outside starts to panic. Luigi gets an idea and orders the doctor to shoot him towards the Fret's floating castle, located right above Bowser's. Once on what is left of the flying island, Luigi deactivates the floating device, and falls into Bowser's castle, squashing the Koopalings and creating a hole in the ceiling, letting the light inside, temporarely blinding Bowser and letting Mario grab the Ultra Super Scope.

As Luigi retakes the magic gems back, Pine, freed from his bindings, informs the brothers that the twelfth last gem is in the mecha's belly. After witnessing the gem-powered ray that caused the ground to melt. Luigi throws the rest of the gems into the Ultra Super Scope's barrel. With ten times the power of Bowser's ray, Mario blows up his mecha and him. With his defeat, all the magic gems fly back into their places and the Dark Realm vanishes: the dark sky makes place for the clear blue sky, the Yoshis stop bickering, Aiko turns back into Bertha, and lastly, Prince Pine and King Fret return humans.

The story ends with Pine thanking the heroes and the Mario Brothers sighing in relief seeing Pine's nose, that for sure is not gonna win Peach's heart over.

GO! GO! Mario Paint Theater![edit]

Bonus chapter

マリオペイント - モトちんワイド劇場げきじょう ルイージ殺人さつじん事件じけん後編こうへん)(Mario Paint - Mototin's Wide Theater: Luigi's murder case (Part 2))

The situation is the following: Luigi was found dead in his room by Mario, Yoshi, Peach, Bowser, Wendy, Daisy, and Wario. Both door and window were locked from the inside of the room at the time of the murder, and his body was found drawing a strange character in Mario Paint, which Mario assumes is the identikit of the culprit. Checking the door handle closely, Bowser notices that it is missing a screw, therefore someone could have actually entered and then used and iron wire to put it back.

Bowser is the first to be accused, but he claim that he would have not killed him in secret. When Mario points to the drawing that has Bowser's horns, he points out that it also has characteristics from Mario, Peach, Daisy, Wendy, and Yoshi too. Luigi's ghost, meanwhile is yelling at them to continue on this track and to also notice what he wrote on the floor: a crossed out「な」(na, "not") and a「が」(ga, "is"), explaining that whoever is not depicted in the drawing is the culprit, while who is depicted is safe.

Checking for more clues, the groups first finds a FAX from a fan adressed to Professor Motoyama (which they repute useless for their case), and then Luigi's footprints from after being struck. Thinking of the cause of death, some presume he could have taken his life because of all the bullying he suffered, Mario and Peach think it was from the debris of the wall they knocked off to enter the room, and Daisy presumes he could have got food poisoning from her bento.

Next up is checking everyone's alibi: Yoshi never had anything to do with Luigi that day; likewise, Wendy is only interested in Mario, but Yoshi claims that by getting rid of Luigi, Mario would have more time for her; but that reason would also apply to Peach; who in turn blames Daisy because she was not okay in being paired with Luigi in the movie. Not even Mario is safe from accusation when Bowser claims he could have got rid of Luigi to have the girls all for himself (something that Mario is even willing to admit).

Unable to come to a conclusion, the improvised detectives decides to close the case by saying that Luigi died for natural causes and to leave, much to Luigi's ghost's astonishment, and even Wario's, who was completely ignored in the investigations, despite him being the killer, having poisoned his juice.

Just then Luigi awakes from this nightmare, alive and well. The next day, Mario informs Peach that Luigi will not come to the cottage, citing his growing distrust of others.

Real-life people[edit]

  • Aiko Gibo: beside Bertha turning into the celebrity psychic in the Dark Realm, Toad also parodies her when him, Peach, Wendy, and Luigi pretends to be judges from a talent TV show, when commenting on Mario and Yoshi skills in dodging Bowser's hits.
