Chapter 1[edit]

Chapter 1

突入とつにゆう!!ストーブだに (Intrusion!! Stone Canyon)

Riding the Floater, Mario, Princess Peach, Luigi (wearing Yoshi Helmet), and Miss Goom arrive to Stove Canyon, where Wario headed. Using the harp, Wario manages to make the enemies fall asleep, until he comes face to face with the area's guardian. After parrying a hit from it with the harp, Wario is unable to dodge a bomb. The explosion sends him flying, making him lose all of his hats and the treasures he found, and also turning him small.

Approaching a tunnel, the lava heat causes the Floater to melt, so the heroes jump off and continue afoot. Unfortunately, the massive flying vehicle has caused the magma to flow into the tunnels. Using his Jet hat, Mario takes everyone out of the tunnel, and into the minecart section, dodging Demon Bats and bombing Guragura. Thanks to Jet Mario, everyone jump safely from one Mine Cart to another, until Luigi, feeling carsick, begins to gag, for which Peach leaves him afoot for the last section, so he can barf if needed. This is revealed to be a blessing in disguise, as the minecart proceeds to slam into a wall (causing Mario to lose the Jet hat), leaving Luigi and Yoshi Helmet unharmed. What's more, behind the cracked wall, Luigi finds a treasure chest. Mario and Miss Goom also find Wario's stuff and realise something has happened to him.

Just then, three D.D.s arrive to collect the treasures, but Mario grabs Wario's loot and claims that they will have it back if they return the Golden Statue. The D.D.s laugh at him and throw boomerangs at them, but Mario deflects them with a wheel of the minecart, knocking them all out. Mario then orders them to reveal the location of their ship, but just then the area's guardian, Devil's Head, appears, with Wario left unconcious on a rock in the middle of the lava river. While Peach, Luigi, and Miss Goom go to rescue him, Mario takes the Viking helmet and turns into Bull Mario, ready to face the boss.

Devil's Head begins to spit two boogers from its nose, but Mario catches both of them. Seeing this, Devil's Head uses his sharp tongue to break the ground around him, leaving him on a small stallatite surrounded by lava. Wario wakes up and tells Mario to throw the boogers back in the guardian's mouth, but the Devil's Head turns towards him and attacks him with its tongue. Peach uses the treasures to block the blow, hurting the tongue and allowing Wario to reach a water main to diverge the water in the room, solidifying the lava. With more ground at his disposition, Mario finally finds an opening and throws the explosive boogers in Devil's Head's mouth, blowing it up.

The explosion also creates a hole in the wall, leading to a hidden gulf where the Pirate Ship is located. Peach then states that, for however has not played the game, this would seem like the final act, but Mario is not convinced.

Chapter 2[edit]

Chapter 2

奪回だつかい!?黄金おうごんぞう (Reclaiming!? The Golden Statue)

Jumping on the rocks, Bull Mario takes Luigi, Peach, and Miss Goom to the SS Tea Cup, while Tiny Wario is left behind. While trying to reach them, a Ukiwani bites Wario's shoe and he takes refuge on a rock. Entering the hull from a window, the heroes find themselves in a room with three Bee Flies spreading a strange powder. Luigi and Peach march foward, but Mario pulls them back to avoid two Droppers, with Yoshi Helmet telling them to be careful with the surrounding enemies. Mistaking Luigi for the one who just spoke, two Goboten behind him start shooting harpoons at him to silencing him. Yoshi turns to them to rectify their mistake, but now Luigi is unable to see and bumps into a barrel. Angry, Luigi declares he will not team up with Yoshi Helmet anymore, and a discussion between the two starts. Peach tries to calm them down, but she gets insulted and she too takes offense, fishing out the Jet Hat from the Treasure sack to wear it, and giving the Dragon Cap to Luigi. Yoshi is left on the ground, so Mario suggests him to go into the sack, but he refuses. Mario grows furious because, as the captain, his authority has been challenged. In an effort to reach a compromise, Miss Goom decides to wear the Yoshi Helmet. As Peach, Mario, and Luigi leave in huff, Miss Goom aks Yoshi what happened. One of the Bee Fly explains that was because they were affected by their powder, a germ that rises a person's irascibility: she was not affected as it did not know she betrayed the Brown Sugar Pirates. Yoshi gets mad, and burns the three bugs.

Looking around, Mario finds an ax in a treasure chest, and uses it to make his way through the ship's rooms. Following his example, Peach and Luigi grab a Piranha Plant and a Muncher respectively to proceed. Doing so, the three heroes arrive to the room with the Golden Statue. As they approach, a Paidan traps them in a web cocoon, while the same three D.D.s from before arrive to laugh at their failed plan, as they continue to bicker with each other. Left behind, Miss Goom finds another treasure chest with a rugby ball inside. By grabbing it with its tongue, Yoshi is cured by the irascibility germs. Seeing this, Miss Goom run to the others, and passes the ball to them. In trying to get it, Mario frees everyone from the spiderweb. After passing the ball to each other, dodging the tackles of the D.D.s, Peach slams the ball onto the Paidan's head. Seeing as their plan failed, the D.D.s jump off through a window into the sea, whil Miss Goom explains that the ball was covered with friendship and sportmanship-affecting germs, which nullified the effect of the irascibility germs.

As the heroes celebrate, a pair of claws burst through the ceiling and grab the Golden Statue. Running to the deck, the group comes face to face with the ship's guardian: Bobo, followed by her Watches hatchlings. Pestered by the little birds, Miss Goom comes with an idea, and after realizing it, the Watches fly away in fear. Bobo, who was just placing the statue on the ground, turns to see what happened: all of the heroes disguised themselves as "Uncle Kentucky", the famous founder and image of a certain fried chicken restaurant. Scared, Bobo too flies off in fear, leaving behind a trail of coins. Dropping their disguises, all that is left for them is to find the Golden Statue. From shore, a female figure waves at them, surrounded by the D.D.s with the Golden Statue. She is the fabled and mysterious Brown Sugar Pirates leader, Captain Syrup. As she and her minions disappear into the Parsley Woods, she challenges the heroes to come and face her to her castle. The adventure is not over yet.

Meanwhile, Wario is still stuck on the rock, surrounded by Ukiwani, muttering how he was deprived of his protagonist role. On the next panel, a worn out and tired Daisy roaming around the island, claiming that Wario should be grateful he was not forgotten, at least.

Chapter 3[edit]

Chapter 3

追跡ついせき!!キャプテンシロップ (Pursuit!! Captain Syrup)

With the heroes jumping to shore, the chase ensues. To slow them down, Syrup and her crew climb up a hill and then throw a Big at them. The giant apple sends Mario, Peach, and Luigi into a natural hot spring, while Yoshi Metto stops it by devouring it. Noticing how they all lost their Power Up Hats, Luigi checks the bottom of the spring and accidentally pulls out the clog, reversing all the water into the lagoon. Thanks to this flow, Wario is finally freed by the Ukiwani, and climbs from where the water appeared. Inside, he finds a Key and a trasure chest with a tribal mask. The mask awakens and forces Wario to wear it, and doing so the curse forces him to dance. Wario manages to make his way to the others, who have found their respective hats, but they do not take him seriously and leave him behind.

Continuing into the forest, they end up getting lost, and hungry. Yoshi begins munching on the parsley leaves, only to suddenly chomp down on something unexpected: Syrup's dagger. Fortunately for them, the dagger points to treasures, so they use it to locate the statue. Their plan leads them to some train tracks, and just then, the train arrives, boarded by Syrup, the D.D.s, and the statue. To avoid getting run over, Mario tells everyone to grab onto Peach and then asks her to jump. Peach obeys, and thanks to her Jet hat, they all land on the train carts. Syrup then orders a Pikkarikun to shoots them. It does so, and the carts are separated by the locomotive where the pirates and the statue are. Peach retorts by using Final Fantasy 6 special ability Sketch to summon another Pikkarikun through painting, then orders it to attack the enemy cloud.

Distracted by them, Syrup takes the chance to take the rail to the castle at a crossroad, then changes the direction to send the cart towards the graveyard. The train carts and the heroes end up crashing into the graves, and the area's guardian, the ghost appears, demanding the train fare and repair money for the tombstones. Mario refuses, so the ghost summons Yarikuri Obake to surround them. While Mario, Peach, and Luigi are distracted by his minions, the ghost goes to take the unguarded sack of treasures, but Miss Goom appears behind it and tackles the ghost, creating a hole in his body. Ghost puts himself back together, claiming that physical moves will not hurt him, and will instead paralize them. Just then, Wario arrives, still wearing the dancing mask, the Yarikuri Obake gets distracted by his movements, so Mario and his friends takes the opportunity to grab them and then toss them at the ghost, defeating him.

As the ghost disappears, Peach finds another treasure chest with a boxing glove inside. Having understood that Wario is dancing against his will, Luigi takes the glove and punches the mask, which releases its grip from Wario, who is sent flying on top of the Fork Tree. From there, Wario spots Syrup Castle. The adventure is nearing its conclusion.

Chapter 4[edit]

Chapter 1

激闘げきとう!!シロップじょう (Fierce Battle!! Syrup Castle)

As the group climbs the staircase to the castle entrance, the Knight appears on the door. With a spear jab, the Knight pushes back the heroes and all of their Power Up Hats, including Yoshi Metto, are sent flying out of the balcony. Miss Goom nearly follows the same fate, but Luigi saves her, and her respect and admiration for Luigi grows. Unable to ruin this scene, the Knight directs his attention onto the others, who are eating the only item left garlic. The Knights backs away, unable to withstand the smell of their breath, so they breathe onto the Knight, causing his armor to fall apart, revealing the three D.D.s under it, piled one on top of the other. Mario demands to be taken to the Golden Statue, but it is too late: the D.D.s show them they already reworked the statue with a Batto Shuruken, and instead of Mario and Luigi it is now modeled after Syrup. Peach is upset at this, claiming that she would have been the better model for it, so Mario propese to remodel it after her, however, it might get skimpier in terms of clothing, to which Peach stops him.

In a corner, Wario notices a small white puff and, while inspecting it, the puff grows bigger, sending the heroes to the top floor, right in front of the door to Syrup's room. The heroes burst in to find Syrup waiting for them, reclining on her bed. Mario and Peach are confused: is Syrup gonna be the final boss, with her non-scary appearance? Hearing that, Syrup pulls out a magic lamp and summons her Genie. She orders it to destroy them, and he obliges, throwing magic pellets at them. They manage to dodge them, to which Syrup hits the Genie in the face for his bad aim. He explains that, compared to the game, he has to focus on more people at once, and also he asks not to hit his head, as it is his weak spot. Having heard that, the heroes copy the idea of the D.D.s and pile themselves into a human tower, and due to his small size, Wario jumps from the top to the Genie's head, stomping on it and defeating him. The Genie blows up in a magical explosion, and all of his curses vanquishes: Wario is back to his regular size, and Yoshi is back to his normal form.

The Genie pulls himself together and asks the heroes forgiveness, by accepting to convert their gathered treasures into a palace. While they decide on what to ask him, since they all have different ideas, Syrup grabs their treasure bag and tosses it out of the window and into the sea out of spite. No treasures, no wish, and the Genie goes back into his lamp. Not yet satisfied, Syrup pulls a lever and activates the self-destruction system: nobody will leave her castle alive. The room's door and window gets locked by the system: the only way out is a Goal Door, but the money needed to open it were in the treasure bag. The wall and ceiling begin to crumble, and while everyone panics, Miss Goom takes a step towards the cracks. Luigi tells her to be careful, but she claims that she will sacrifice herself in order to drop coins at her defeat, allowing his friends to escape. Everyone, including Syrup, is left stunned, asking her to rethink it, but she is adamant and bravely stand under the falling ceiling. Luigi digs into the debris to save her, but she expresses in her final words: "I'm sorry we cannot be together", and then she disappears, leaving one coin behind. Touched by her brave act, Syrup cries for her loss with Luigi, and when he goes to open the door, Mario tells him that it is ok if he does not want to waste the coin, and they will all gladly accept to go to heaven (with a couple of exceptions), but Luigi claims that he would waste her sacrifice, and opens the door. Everyone gets inside, ending up in a bunker underneath the castle.

Outside, Yoshi wakes up in time to see the castle collapsing, but sighs in relief when he sees his friends popping out of a trapdoor. With the adventure over, the heroes take the SS Tea Cup and make their way back to the Mushroom Kingdom. Unbeknownst to them, the Genie's lamp ended up floating in the Capri Sea.

The manga concludes, but one last pannel offers an alternative to the end of the story: "What happened to Daisy?"

Chapter 5[edit]

Chapter 5

復活ふつかつ!!デビデビ大王だいおう (Return!! Demon Bat King)

Since the heroes have returned from their quest in Kitchen Island, a mysterious mist has fallen on the Mushroom Kingdom and it is slowly rotting all of the Toads, and it is even affecting the Mushroom King. When Mario asks who could be the responsible, a small Floater appears and tells them they did it. She explains that the Floater they used as an aircraft and discarded into the Stove Canyon was actually a statue, and not only that, it was also a seal that kept the dangerous Demon Bat King trapped. With the destruction of the statue, the Demon Bat King is free and he will cause the end of the world by spreading a toxic gas with his army of Konotako. Taking responsibility for his release, Mario and Luigi decide to seek advice from Kinoko Sennin de Arushindo, while Peach will tend to her father and people. As they go to him, the mist turns into an acid rain.

The rain has not reached Wario Land yet, where Wario returned after building the only palace he could afford, a birdhouse, so Mario, Luigi, and Floater have no trouble to reach the giant mushroom, but that too was whiltered by the mist. Looks like the fate of the world is just in the Mario Bros.' hands, but the heremit is not gone yet, and with its remaining strenght, moves the island towards Kitchen Island. As Wario Land connects with the island, the Mario Bros. and the Floater venture inside the former pirate cove. They first reunite with Daisy, who was left on the island for so long, then they come across Captain Syrup. She claims to have been redeemed (as proven by her skull earings being replaced by octopus earings), she is collecting the treasures to build back her castle, but still needs the Genie's lamp, and asks Mario to give it to her. But Mario explains the lamp was lost following the castle explosion and he does not have it. Syrup is heartbroken, until she realizes that she explored the whole island and did not find the lamp, therefore Mario must be lying, and after seeing something bulging in Mario's pants, she comes to the conclusion that he is hiding the lamp in his overalls.

With a plan in mind, Syrup invites the heroes inside her temporary house, a tree trunk. offering Mario a fruity feast, and Luigi and Daisy a small octopus tentacle. She then offers Mario to relax in her hot spring, and while Luigi reminds him they are on a mission, Mario is unable to refuse, especially when Daisy offers to wash his back. Syrup kicks Luigi and Floater out of her house, then goes to check in Mario's clothes for the lamp. Meanwhile, Luigi and Floater are reached by Wario, and they lament how life is unfair with them. Hearing this, the Demon Bat King appears and brainwashes them with the promise of rectifying this injustice. Floater manages to fly away, while Luigi and Wario are turned into Demon Bat King's slaves and take a bazooka. As Syrup is unable to find the lamp in Mario's clothes, convinced Mario is bathing while holding it, her house and spring are blown up, knocking her out. Mario and Daisy watch, as the Demon Bat King informs them of the birth of the Demon Bat Gang, ordering Mario to leave while he still can. As the evil gang leaves, Floater informs Mario that they need to vanquish the Demon Bat King quickly.

Cameos and caricatures[edit]

Uncle Kentucky
The Uncle Kentucky disguises.

Fictional characters[edit]

  • Sasuke (Joy Mech Fight): in the second 4-koma, Wario mistakes Bucket Head with Sasuke.
  • Misae Nohara (Crayon Shin-chan): when spotting Syrup's silohuette on the shore, Luigi mistakes her for Shin-chan's mother, who does bear a resemblance to Syrup.
  • Relm (Final Fantasy VI): to fight back the Pikkarikun, Peach uses "Sketch", Relm's special ability. The move consents the user to summon through painting a copy of the enemy. While doing so, Luigi asks if it is ok for Peach to "steal" the move from another game.
  • Ultros (Final Fantasy): the recurring monster in the Final Fantasy series appears on a painting in Captain Syrup's room.
  • Interceptor (Final Fantasy VI): Shadow's dog also appears in a painting in Syrup's room.

Real-life people[edit]

  • Colonel Sanders: to scare off Bobo and the Watches, the heroes disguise themselves as "Uncle Kentucky", a clear nod and reference to Colonel Sanders, famous founder and image of the Kentucky Fried Chicken chain of restaurants, complete with white wigs, mustaches, and (in the case of Mario and Luigi) suits.
  • Yumi Adachi: after defeating the ghost, Mario pities him by calling him "poor guy", to which he replies "if you think that, give me money", so Mario retorts that he is not Yumi Adachi from the Japanese TV Drama Homeless Child. The TV Drama was Yumi Adachi's breakthrough work, in which she plays the protagonist, a girl named Aizawa Suzu who is facing homelessness after finally fighting back against her abusive stepfather.
  • Yumiko Takahashi: during Miss Goom's death scene, a note suggests playing「友達でいいから」(Tomodachi de īkara), Takahashi's recent single at the time.

Fated rivals. It's a phrase that seems to have been made for Mario and Wario. It sounds cool, but in reality, the strange supporting characters are what make them stand out. This time too, there are a lot of strong supporting characters.

A word from the author
There's a fine line between being funny and being silly, and I always struggle with that. Even if something is clear, if it's too straightforward it becomes dark, and if it's too silly it doesn't get through to the reader... This story was really high level!
