In Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land 1, a young Wario intends to impress Princess Peach, and takes her and Mario and Luigi to the island. Then he disconnects the rope bridge and claims it his own, renaming it "Wario Land", and declares himself the ruler of Wario Land: his first order is to make Peach his queen. The Mario Bros. are against it, but are beaten up. In their aid, a spirit called Kinoko Sennin de Arushindo, the manifestation of a giant mushroom on the island, train them in their jumping abilities and teach them about the powers of the Super Mushrooms. With that, Mario beats up Wario, rescues Peach, and Luigi takes everyone back to the mainland in one high jump, leaving Wario on the island.
In Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land 2, after the events of the game, a Floater informs the Mario Bros. that they have released a dangerous monster called Debidebi Daiō, who is spreading a toxic mist and acid rain in the world from Kitchen Island. The Mario Bros. decide to ask the giant mushroom of the island for advice, but it too got affected by the plague, but with its remaining powers, moves the island to Kitchen Island. In the meantime, Wario is revealed to have returned to the island, after the adventure, where he built the only castle he could have gotten: a birdhouse.
