The Heart Game is a recurring minigame in the early Wario Land series. It along with the Coin Game acts as a successor to the Casino minigames in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. In both of its appearances, it can be performed after every level and is used to collect hearts and extra lives, though the gameplay differs greatly.
History[edit]
Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3[edit]
In Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Wario is allowed to play the Heart Game or the Coin Game after every level, but not both. In it, there are three "courses" that can be selected from a billboard for different amounts of coins (represented as dollar signs), with the C course costing 20, the B course costing 40, and the A course costing 100. In each, Wario is situated on one end of a river with a supply of five bombs, and is able to move left and right. He must throw the bombs across the river to hit the enemies that are moving across (with the type of enemy and their speed depending on the course's cost), while throwing before the bomb explodes on him after nine seconds. A power meter is used to show the throw's strength, with an arrow rapidly moving from left-to-right before resetting back to the default position. If the throw button is pressed with the arrow too far to the left, the bomb will not make it across the river. By holding down the button, the arrow will stop as Wario primes the throw, allowing him to continue moving and aiming while not having to worry about the arrow's placement anymore. Due to the trajectory of the throws, the location of the enemy by the time the bomb reaches the other side of the river must also be estimated accurately or the bomb will miss. At the end of the game, the amount of hits determines the amount of hearts or extra life|extra lives Wario receives, with it varying by the course's cost.
Virtual Boy Wario Land[edit]
In Virtual Boy Wario Land, Wario can play both it and the Coin Game. Here, the three difficulties cost 100, 200, and 300 coins, represented by floating blocks, and determine the amount of items and obstacles that appear; higher difficulty ones have much more of both, especially more valuable items. When one is selected, the floor is replaced with Jump Transporters, allowing Wario to jump between the foreground and the background. Between the two, a line of hearts and bats slowly flies from the right to the left. Collecting a heart or Big Heart adds it to the player's total, but hitting a bat causes Wario to drop all the hearts he has gathered so far. Occasionally, a bat carries a diamond extra life while bobbing up and down. Wario must be careful to jump at it when it is at its highest point so he can grab the diamond without touching the bat; successfully doing so causes it to fly away harmlessly. These become especially common on higher difficulties, with the lowest usually only having one. Collecting all the hearts and diamonds while avoiding the bats causes fireworks to go off with a "Perfect!" display before the minigame is exited.
