Gate keys[citation needed] are special items in Virtual Boy Wario Land. One appears in every stage in the game and is required to open the elevator at the end of the respective stage. They are generally hidden in obscure parts of the stage or require a puzzle to be solved to uncover, similar to the treasure, though unlike the treasures these are required to complete the stage. In normal stages, they look like normal keys, though in boss stages (where they are the reward for defeating the boss), they have a more ornate design, similar to the locks on the elevators.
