Virtual Boy Wario Land stages

Stage 3[1] is the third stage of Virtual Boy Wario Land. It is set almost entirely underwater, introducing swimming mechanics and aquatic enemies to the player.

Layout[edit]

A ? Block containing a Dragon Crystal, surrounded by blocks, can be found immediately in front of the elevator. This can be used to transform into Sea Dragon Wario and break the block above the elevator for a big coin. Further to the right are three Chain-Saw Fish, surrounding a row of stone blocks on the seabed, of which the rightmost two can be broken for more big coins. Following this, two Bonfire Blocks surrounded by Spike Traps are situated on the ceiling. Breaking these with flames allows Wario to break the stone block above them, granting access to a bonus room with various blocks full of coins, hearts, and a garlic bottle (along with a Thorny Fish circling above). The first room ends with another stone block and a ? Block, both containing big coins, and a pipe to the next room.

The second room is a vertical section populated with Big Mouths, which pop up from the background to try and eat Wario. Two ? Blocks with coins can be found on the bottom right side, with a ? Block containing another garlic bottle directly above. From here, the player must snake upwards around horizontal platforms while avoiding the Big Mouths. After a few turnarounds and a vertical stretch of swimming, a cache of coins can be found, guarded by some Bonfire Blocks to their left. Two more ? Blocks containing hearts are situated below the Big Mouth to the left of this. Swimming up and past one more Big Mouth leads to three coins and the next pipe.

The third room goes from right to left, and contains several downwards currents and Chain-Saw Fish, with the seabed broken up by a few Spike Traps. Between the currents are a few ? Blocks containing coins, another Dragon Crystal, and a heart.

The next pipe from here leads to the fourth room, a small vertical section with more Big Mouths. Two stone blocks in the bottom left can be broken for a big coin. Directly above this is a small cache of hearts behind some blocks; left and upwards of this is a passage to a small room with an L-shaped array of Empty Blocks and ? Blocks, mostly containing coins and hearts. The stage's key is contained in the rightmost of these blocks, guarded by a Thorny Fish. Returning to the previous room, after breaking the stone block in front of the passage (or going under the heart cache and back up), the player can enter the pipe in the upper right to proceed.

Next is the fifth room, a horizontal section which begins with two rows of blocks; these sandwich a current leading down into a Spike Trap in the seabed. The third block of the left row is a ? Block containing a Dragon Crystal. Several coins sit below the blocks, as well as a Thorny Fish and Chain-Saw Fish. To the right, past another current leading into a Spike Trap, is a pipe in the ceiling blocked by several stone blocks and Bonfire Blocks. This leads to another bonus room, this time not underwater, which contains a diamond and some coin blocks. Right of this is the last pipe in the stage.

The entrance to the sixth room

The sixth and last main room of the stage is mostly dry, with a shallow pool of water at the bottom. The player enters at the bottom left, where they must avoid Ball N' Chains circling around a bridge of Empty Blocks, and a Thorny Fish swimming beneath them. A ladder at the far right end leads upwards, with another ladder at the far left end atop two stone blocks.

To the right of the ladder is a narrow passage blocked by a Bonfire Block. After breaking this, the player can crawl through while avoiding more Ball N' Chains to reach one last bonus room, with a long row of ? Blocks containing coins and hearts atop a pool of water, with three more Ball N' Chains swinging directly below.

Returning to the main room, the three ceiling tiles directly above the ladder can be broken for a few more coins. Right of this is one last ? Block containing a Viking helmet. Finally, the player can head right to the exit elevator and move on to Stage 4, the first boss stage.

Treasure[edit]

Treasure found in Stage 3 of Virtual Boy Wario Land. Treasure found in the second-playthrough version of Stage 3 in Virtual Boy Wario Land.

The stage's treasure is found in the last room. By obtaining the Viking helmet to become Bull Wario and using a Body Slam on the stone block directly beneath the second ladder, a hidden door to the treasure will be revealed. The treasure is modelled after a rooster; in the second playthrough, it is a featherless chicken.

Second playthrough[edit]

The game's harder second playthrough adds additional Spike Traps throughout the stage, some replacing regular terrain. Notable additions include two Spike Traps in the fifth room that force the player to swim under the second row of blocks, and similar stacks of Spike Traps in the next room that the player also must swim or crawl beneath.
