The storyline known as Wakuwaku Time Traveler!, known by fans as just "Time Traveler", of the Super Mario Bros. 4: Super Mario World series would have been the ninth volume of the Super Mario World arc of the Super Mario manga series by Kodansha, but it was never published in a paperback version.
The chapters were originally serialized in Deluxe BomBom from June to October 1992.
Plot[edit]
Dr. Mario Nakamatsu, a Dr. Mario-lookalike, invented a time machine. Bowser steals it to kidnap a young Princess Peach in an era where Mario is too young to fight back and then marry her after groming her to his liking, so Mario, Luigi, and Peach follow him through time and space with a second time machine to stop him, armed with seven inventions from Dr. Nakamatsu.
Beside Mario and Peach's childhood era, the characters also explore the Wild West era and the Prehistoric era.
Chapter 3[edit]
クッパをおつてのタイムトラベル。ついに
Following Bowser through a time tunnel, Mario jumps on his time machine, but young Peach gives it away his position. In a panic, Bowser drifts and accidentally causes his vehicle to land in Japan, 1687 A.D., the Edo period. The machine crashes into the palace of the fifth Edo shōgun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. He orders his guards to capture the intruders that dared disrupt his lunchtime. Noticing how the shōgun is identical to Yoshi, Bowser offers him a fruit from Yoshi's Island. Tsunayoshi gladly accepts the tasty gift, and frees him and his "spouse", then he listens to his requests and puts Mario in prison. Before he is led to his cell, young Peach points out he is carrying Dr. Nakamatsu's bags of inventions, so Bowser confiscates it.
In his cell, Mario meets an ill old man similar to him and his daughter similar to Peach: she explains that her father opposed to Tsunayoshi's edict about not mistreating animals. The old man then presents himself as inventor Mario Gennai, which Mario recalls being Dr. Nakamatsu's ancestor. After healing him with a mushroom, a guard releases them, as he informs them that the edit changed, so their crimes are nullified: the new edit now protects only turtles, and anyone who harms them, even accidentally, will face severe punishments. Soon enough, Bowser, under the permission of the shōgun, corrupted with many fruits, institutes new rules in favor of turtles, culminating in forcing people to wear turtle shells on their backs, shells that he will sell for a high price, but faced with the possibility of being punished with the ishidaki torture method, people go to buy his shells, making him a rich tycoon. With his booming business, Bowser now desires to marry Peach but must wait for her to reach legal adulthood, but fearing that she might lose interest in her childhood promise to marry him, he devises a plan.
With Mario Gennai unable to invent something useful, Mario mutters that they would need someone like Mito Kōmon to solve the situation. Just then, Mito Kōmon (identical to Yosshīdamusu) and his followers Suke-san and Kaku-san arrive in town, but are squashed by the arrival of the Time Machine 2-gō with Luigi and Peach. With the gang back together, and picking up Mito Kōmon's seal, Mario comes up with a plan. Inside Bowser's shell shop, Bowser is preparing for the wedding with young Peach, explaining to the shōgun that age will not matter, as he can use a spray from Dr. Nakamatsu bag to quickly grow his spouse to a legal (and "bouncier") age. Just then, Mario, Luigi, and Mario Gennai, disguised as Mito Kōmon and his followers respectively, barge in to oppose the wedding. Tsunayoshi calls for his guards, but Mario shows Mito's seal, which makes the guards and the shōgun stop. Worried, Bowser the growin sprays onto young Peach, but instead of growing up, she increases in size. Bowser feels scammed by the situation, but then decides to spray himself, but only his head grows bigger, destroying the palace and knocking out the shōgun with a falling debris.
Everyone starts laughing at the big-headed Bowser, causing Mario and friends' disguises to fall. Furious, Bowser slowly rolls towards them, while adult Peach takes back Dr. Nakamatsu's bag, pulling out the fourth invention: the Artificial Plasma Generator, a tuning fork able to generate lightning bolts. Unfortunately, Luigi discovers it needs to be plug in, but Mario Gennai has a solution: a tandem-like exercise bike that can generate energy. Luigi plugs the Generator in and together with Mario and Mario Gennai start pedaling, generating an electric shock that hits Bowser and young Peach, returning them to their normal size. Peach takes the opportunity to try and drag away her younger self, but she refuses to come along with her, still ingenuely trusting Bowser, and shoves her adult self. Peach trips and bumps her head on a rock, fainting. Seeing this, Bowser catches her and runs away with his Time Machine. Everyone is in shock, most of them young Peach, who is ready to make her ex-fiancé pay for breaking their promise.
