In Yoshi's Story, hearts[1] (also formatted as ♥s in-game and in the instruction booklet[2]) may appear when a Yoshi performs certain actions, such as eating fruit, defeating enemies, and collecting coins. Hearts are symbols of happiness and are essential to improving Yoshi's Mood, not only adding points to a course's total score but also recovering petals on a Yoshi's Smile Meter. Players can strive for earning as many hearts as possible in order to get a high score while replaying a course in Trial Mode.

Certain Yoshis earn three hearts when eating their Favorite Fruits or Shy Guys that match their colors the closest, and the hearts a Yoshi earns are doubled when he stomps on a Shy Guy or throws an egg at it instead. A Yoshi also receives three hearts when eating one of a course's 30 melons regardless of the Yoshi's color. A Yoshi also earns eight hearts when eating a Lucky Fruit; whether said Lucky Fruit happens to be the color Yoshi's Favorite Fruit does not affect the number of hearts to be received.

Additionally, some actions earn a Yoshi an outline of a heart (♡), as opposed to a filled-in heart (♥), such as when he eats a Power Flower. These heart outlines do heal a Yoshi's Smile Meter (adding one petal to it each), but unlike the filled-in hearts (which earn the Yoshi one point each), they do not affect Yoshi's Mood and thus do not earn him any points.

Yoshi's MoodEdit

Yoshi's Mood is the total score that a Yoshi has made on a course, accumulated from the points earned throughout it via hearts. When a Yoshi finishes a course, these points are tallied up in a results screen, and 100 extra hearts apiece are awarded as well with certain conditions. The final score could be saved if it was made through Trial Mode.

The points earned are sorted into six categories:

  • Fruit – The hearts earned throughout the course when any kind of fruit is eaten.
  • Enemies – The hearts earned throughout the course when enemies are defeated.
  • Coins – The hearts earned throughout the course when coins are collected.
  • Hearts – 100 hearts are added for each Special Heart collected throughout a course. Despite the game manual depicting a Heart Fruit, Heart Fruits are not being accounted for in this category.
  • Melons – In addition to a melon already earning a Yoshi three hearts when eaten, a 100-heart bonus is also awarded for each melon being collected.
  • Yoshis – 100 hearts are added for each Baby Yoshi that still remains after the course is cleared.
