An emblem is a symbol that appears on an item used by a specific character in many of the Mario spinoff and main series titles, usually representing said character in some fashion; for example, Mario's emblem is the red M that is sewn on his cap, whereas that of Yoshi is his egg. | An emblem is a symbol that appears on an item used by a specific character in many of the Super Mario spinoff and main series titles, usually representing said character in some fashion; for example, Mario's emblem is the red M that is sewn on his cap, whereas that of Yoshi is his egg. | ||
== | ==History== | ||
In the Mario Party series, emblems first appeared in Mario Party 2 in the barrels of the 4-Player minigame Sneak 'n' Snore. In Mario Party 3, they appear in the planes of the minigame Aces High. In Mario Party 4, emblems cam be seen in the vehicles of the minigame Mario Speedwagons. In Mario Party 7, they are used to denote who controls Character Spaces (created when someone places an Orb on a space); when using team-based rulesets, the game instead uses one of two or four preset team emblems. They also appear in Windmillville, denoting ownership of a particular windmill and the Stars tied to it. In the minigame Air Farce, emblems are depicted in each character's hang glider. In Mario Party 8, an emblem appears next to the character to indicate when it is their turn during gameplay; Koopa's Tycoon Town also uses a similar mechanic to the aforementioned Windmillville, using each character's emblem to denote ownership of the hotels. The game also includes the minigame Stampede, where the player must stamp their character's emblem onto blank sheets of paper. In Mario Party 9, emblems appear on the flags of the minigame Peak Precision, and in the results table in the minigame Castle Clearout when played with two players. | |||
Emblems | Emblems have been used in the Mario Tennis series since Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, with each character's racket having their emblem inked on its strings. | ||
Emblems first appear in the Mario Kart series in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, in which certain karts have their driver's emblem present on the kart's body. Starting in Mario Kart DS, each character has a distinct, more streamlined emblem. Like in Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, a character's emblem may be present on their vehicle, with many vehicles (as well as, starting with Mario Kart 7, certain gliders) having designated spots where the driver's emblem is displayed. In Mario Kart 7, the driver's emblem is also displayed in the center of their steering wheel in First-Person View, and in Mario Kart 8, the horn on the Wii U GamePad has the driver's emblem on it with a corresponding colored background. Mario Kart DS also uniquely features emblem customization, allowing players to create their own emblems using the Nintendo DS Touch Screen, which would be displayed during online games. | |||
Emblems are featured on Goal Poles and Checkpoint Flags in | Emblems are featured on Goal Poles and Checkpoint Flags in the Super Mario series of platformers starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. When a character touches a Goal Pole or a Checkpoint Flag, the emblem on it (usually Bowser's emblem) will be replaced with their own, and the flag will change color to match the character as well. | ||
Emblems also | Emblems also appear in the Mario & Sonic series on flags and emblems (not to be confused with the symbols themselves). The Super Mario characters have their usual emblems, while most of the Sonic the Hedgehog characters (with the exceptions of Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega) use silhouettes of their faces, entirely in one color besides the eyes, at a different angle and with a colored background. | ||

- This article is about the character symbols in the Mario series. For the universe symbols in the Super Smash Bros. series, see the "Major series represented" section on the Super Smash Bros. series article. For the collectibles found in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games, see List of collectibles in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games § Emblems.
An emblem is a symbol that appears on an item used by a specific character in many of the Super Mario spinoff and main series titles, usually representing said character in some fashion; for example, Mario's emblem is the red M that is sewn on his cap, whereas that of Yoshi is his egg.
History
Emblems have been used in the Mario Tennis series since Mario Tennis for the Nintendo 64, with each character's racket having their emblem inked on its strings.
Emblems are featured on Goal Poles and Checkpoint Flags in the Super Mario series of platformers starting with New Super Mario Bros. Wii. When a character touches a Goal Pole or a Checkpoint Flag, the emblem on it (usually Bowser's emblem) will be replaced with their own, and the flag will change color to match the character as well.
Emblems also appear in the Mario & Sonic series on flags and emblems (not to be confused with the symbols themselves). The Super Mario characters have their usual emblems, while most of the Sonic the Hedgehog characters (with the exceptions of Dr. Eggman and Eggman Nega) use silhouettes of their faces, entirely in one color besides the eyes, at a different angle and with a colored background.
List of character emblems
Character emblems that are denoted with a darker background stopped appearing since the most recent version was first used.
Character | Image | First appearance | Description | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Mario | Mario Tennis | A red letter "M". | Taken directly from the "M" insignia sewn on his red cap. Colors are sometimes inverted, commonly on a white backdrop. | |
Luigi | Mario Tennis | A green letter "L". | Taken directly from the "L" insignia sewn on his green cap. Colors are sometimes inverted, commonly on a white backdrop. | |
Princess Peach | Mario Tennis | A yellow crown, embedded with round jewels: a red jewel on the front and two blue jewels on the side. | Common depiction of Peach's Crown. | |
Yoshi | Mario Tennis | A white egg with three green spots, commonly leaning towards the left. | Represents Yoshi's Egg, which Yoshis lay, throw, and sometimes get trapped inside of. Other color variants of Yoshis use their egg's color variant as their emblem. | |
Bowser | Mario Tennis | A red, stylized silhouette of Bowser's face, commonly on a black backdrop. | His stylized silhouette is taken from his wipe transition when Mario loses a life in Super Mario 64 and certain other games. Sometimes depicted in orange rather than red in earlier titles like Mario Power Tennis. Lacks the holes for the eyes, nose and mouth in Mario Tennis. | |
Toad | Mario Tennis | A Mushroom with a white cap and red spots. | A stylized depiction of Toad's head. The original depiction as used in Mario Tennis was less round and had no eyes. The version used in Mario Party 7 and Mario Party 8 includes a small, smiling mouth as well. Sometimes colored blue if Toad is blue in a game, and sometimes used in a different color to match when another, differently-colored Toad is using it. | |
Mario Kart: Double Dash!! | A Mushroom with a red cap and white spots. | Represents a Super Mushroom. | ||
Donkey Kong | Mario Tennis | The yellow letters "DK" with red and yellow borders, commonly on a red backdrop. | Taken from Donkey Kong's initials as depicted on his red tie. Also matches with the "DK" symbol on DK Barrels, but with the colors inverted. Sometimes, such as in Mario Tennis, this emblem's colors are inverted, matching the DK Barrels more closely. | |
Wario | Mario Tennis | An indigo letter "W". | Taken directly from the "W" insignia sewn on his yellow cap. | |
Mario Tennis Open | Wario's pink nose and crooked mustache. | Used only in the Mario Tennis series as of Mario Tennis Open. Occasionally used as a motif for the WarioWare series, sometimes also including Wario's eyes. | ||
Princess Daisy | Mario Tennis | A round flower with six yellow petals and a teal center. | Stylized depiction of Daisy's jewelry (her earrings and brooch); represents the flower motifs that recur with Daisy. The version originally used in Mario Tennis was more oval than in future titles. | |
Waluigi | Mario Tennis | A yellow "Γ" with a purple border. | Taken directly from the inverted "L" insignia sewn on his purple cap. | |
Koopa Troopa | Mario Power Tennis | A stylized depiction of a Green Shell, worn by Koopa Troopas. | Other color variants of Koopa Troopas use their shells' color variant as their emblem. | |
Koopa Paratroopa | Mario Tennis | A stylized depiction of a wing. | Considering they are the first winged variation of a common enemy, wings are commonly associated with Paratroopas, which is also evidenced by the P-Wing. | |
Bowser Jr. | Mario Power Tennis | An orange, stylized silhouette of Bowser Jr.'s face, commonly on a black backdrop. | The version in Mario Power Tennis has Bowser Jr.'s face look more menacing than in later titles. | |
Diddy Kong | Mario Power Tennis | Two yellow stars with red and yellow borders, usually on a red backdrop. | The same two stars are depicted on Diddy Kong's shirt. | |
Boo | Mario Power Tennis | A large red mouth with four pointed teeth. | A stylized depiction of a Boo's open mouth, as Boos usually appear with. The version in Mario Power Tennis also features a tongue. | |
Mario Tennis | A blue tear, wisp or fireball. | May represent Boo's shyness, or their ghostly nature. | ||
King Boo | Mario Kart Wii | A large red mouth with four pointed teeth, topped with a yellow crown embedded with diamond-shaped jewels: a blue jewel on the front, and two red jewels on the sides. | A combination of Boo's emblem and a stylized depiction of King Boo's crown. | |
Professor E. Gadd | Super Mario Sunshine | A stylized depiction of Professor E. Gadd's head. | Shown in various colors, such as red, blue or gray for each respective nozzle box in Super Mario Sunshine, or green for the board view of E. Gadd's Garage in Mario Party 6. | |
Birdo | Mario Tennis | A stylized depiction of Birdo's ribbon, albeit pink rather than red. | Originally depicted as red in Mario Tennis. Other color variants of Birdos use this emblem as well, albeit matching the color of their body rather than that of their bow. | |
Toadette | Mario Kart Wii | A Mushroom with a pink cap, white spots, and braided pigtails. | A stylized depiction of Toadette's head. The version used in Mario Party 7 and Mario Party 8 includes a small, smiling mouth as well. | |
Rosalina | Mario Kart Wii | A stylized depiction a Grand Star. | Grand Stars have an association with Rosalina, as they and various Power Stars are the power source of her Comet Observatory. | |
Luma | Mario Tennis Open | A stylized depiction of a Luma, commonly with a dark blue backdrop. | ||
Honey Queen | Mario Kart 7 | A yellow and brown striped circle with insect wings and stinger, adorned with a crown with blue jewels. | A stylized depiction of Honey Queen's body and crown. | |

Mario Kart Tour | The red letters "Jr." with white and gray borders. | An emblem in the style of Donkey Kong Jr.'s shirt and the Japanese logo for Donkey Kong Jr. However, this is the first time the "R" on a Donkey Kong Jr. logo is depicted in lowercase. Because this emblem is used for a Super Mario Kart variant of Donkey Kong Jr. in Mario Kart Tour, it appears pixelated. | ||
