Hammer Throw is an Athletics Event that appears in the Nintendo 3DS version of Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The aim of the event is to throw the hammer the furthest distance. The event has a starting world record of 86.74m and a starting Olympic record of 84.80m.
In this event, the player must first press and hold both the L and R Buttons to grab and hold the hammer. They then must rotate the system while it is in a horizontal position to cause their character to swing the hammer and build power. The faster they rotate the system, the more power is built, which will cause the hammer to fly further when thrown. The power of the hammer is indicated by the color that it glows, starting off as blue, then turning orange and red when the maximum power is built up. After a while, the player's speed will be locked and they can stop rotating but must continue to hold the L and R buttons. Five colored regions will then appear at the opening to the cage, which indicate how far the hammer will fly when it is thrown, flying furthest in the red zone, less in the yellow zone and the lest in the blue zone. A white line will rotate through the zones with the hammer, indicating where it will fly when thrown. When the player releases L and R, the hammer will fly and Charmy will measure the distance when it lands. If the player fails to let go after four rotations, time will be up and they will record no distance. They will also not record a distance if they release the hammer and it hits the side of the cage or lands outside of the measuring lines. The player only gets one attempt at this event.
Hold the system horizontally!
1) Grab Hammer: Hold the Land R Buttons.
2) Spin: Tilt the system in a circle, as is rolling a marble on it.
3) Throw: Release the L and R Buttons
In Medley Match mode, Hammer Throw appears as the third event in the Throwing Medley, the fifth event in the Graduation Exam Medley, the fourth event in the Perfect Timing Medley and the first event in the De-Stress Medley.
In the game's story mode, Hammer Throw appears as part of the first challenge in Wild Ones Episode 2, Corner the Koopa King!, in which Knuckles must beat Bowser in it as well as in Football and Javelin Throw. It also appears as the second challenge of Wild Ones Bonus 1, Bowser's Blues, in which Bowser must beat Donkey Kong, and again as the first part of the first challenge in Wild Ones Bonus 2, The Life of a Minion, in which Bowser must beat Knuckles in it with Javelin Throw, Football, Boxing and Wrestling - Freestyle.
