Message Block, Yoshi's New Island

Goonies are recurring Yoshi's Island series enemies first introduced in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. They are white birds that are likely based on the snowy albatross, also named a "goonie" or "gooney bird", but Goonies have been described as being "seagulls".[1]

History[edit]

Yoshi series[edit]

Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island / Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3[edit]

Goonies are found in groups primarily in mountain levels in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake. They appear by flying through the area, soaring in a downward curve. If a Yoshi touches them from the sides and beneath them, Yoshis get damaged; however they can be ridden on, riding them as they fly through the air similarly to enemies such as Beezos and Para-Beetles and allow the Yoshis to reach otherwise unreachable areas. While ridden, a Goonie is unable to ascend in the air and slowly descends. Some Goonies carry Shy Guys and drop them off on platforms. Goonies first appear in Danger - Icy Conditions Ahead.

Goonies additionally have several variants. Skeleton Goonies cannot be ridden on and can carry and drop bombs. Flightless Goonies and Flightless Skeleton Goonies skitter along the ground, usually in groups, and both can be made if a Yoshi hits a winged Goonie or a Skeleton Goonie with an egg or spits one out after eating it. Hefty Goonies move around by bouncing about, and Bowling Goonies are their flightless equivalents that roll around and can be created in a similar fashion to Flightless Goonies.

Additionally, Goonies can be seen flying in the background in some levels such as Goonie Rides!

Yoshi's Story[edit]

Goonies
Artwork from Yoshi's Story

Goonies (also known as Bomber Birds[2][3]) are enemies in Yoshi's Story. They are found in Poochy & Nippy and in Shy Guy's Ship, with them sometimes carrying bombs in the former level. Goonies cannot hurt the Yoshis directly and constantly make an "Aa-ho!" noise, based on their Japanese name. They otherwise behave similarly to their appearance in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island.

Yoshi Touch & Go[edit]

Goonies appear with Skeleton Goonies as enemies in Yoshi Touch & Go. They occasionally fly in the sky in certain parts during the ground part of the Marathon mode. Yoshi can hit them with eggs to earn points. When they appear, they make an "Aa-ho!" noise.

Yoshi's Island DS[edit]

Goonies return in Yoshi's Island DS, along with Flightless Goonies and Skeleton Goonies. They behave mostly the same as in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, though Goonies and Flightless Goonies use sprites edited from their Yoshi Touch & Go appearance, while Skeleton Goonies use ones edited from Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, resulting in Skeleton Goonies being noticeably smaller than normal Goonies. Goonies appear especially in Goonie Heights and The Goonie Coast Isn't Clear! A Hefty Goonie boss named Moltz the Very Goonie is the fort boss of World 5. Also after The Fort of Moltz the Very Goonie is completed, all the later levels have Skeleton Goonies.

Yoshi's New Island[edit]

Goonies are enemies in Yoshi's New Island, as well as their varieties Skeleton Goonies, Flightless Goonies, Flightless Skeleton Goonies, and Hefty Goonies, all with similar behavior to their appearances in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Goonies are featured in Fine Feathered Friends or Foes?, though they also appear in Cruise the Clouds and Snow Go Mountain. Both levels aside from the challenge level Snow Go Mountain that feature Goonies use STAGE_UKLELE as its primary background soundtrack.

Yoshi's Woolly World / Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World[edit]

Goonies have an amigurumi appearance in Yoshi's Woolly World and its port, matching the game's aesthetic. They are first found in World 3, Fanciful Fluff and Feathers. They fly from right to left and can harm Yoshi. However, they can be turned into white yarn balls if Yoshi eats them. When stood on, Goonies rise up, allowing Yoshi to reach items previously out of reach. If hit with a yarn ball, Goonies lose their wings and become Flightless Goonies.

Yoshi's Crafted World[edit]

Goonies are enemies in Yoshi's Crafted World. They are rare enemies alongside their flightless counterparts. Their appearance and behavior are mostly unchanged from previous games. Goonies first appear in the course Windward Way. Their main use in this game is to transport Yoshi from pit to pit. Goonie and Flightless Goonie crafts can also be found in the courses Pirate Pier, Windward Way, Bombs Away on Pirate Island, Slip-Slide Isle and Open, Shut! There is also a Goonie paper cutout attached to the Waterwheel costume from Yarrctopus Docks and a constellation of another Goonie on the front side of Ride the Stars.

Tetris Attack[edit]

A Goonie is allied with Lakitu in Tetris Attack.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

Goonies appear in the background of Super Happy Tree, introduced in Super Smash Bros., and Yoshi's Island, introduced in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. There is also a Sticker of them in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Game & Watch Gallery 3[edit]

Goonies are an interactable species in Game & Watch Gallery 3. They appear in the Modern version of Turtle Bridge, where they serve as platforms (replacing turtles in the Classic version) to help Toad deliver packages from Mario to Peach. Some of the Goonies dive at passing balloons, and if Toad jumps or stays on a Goonie that descends to pop a balloon, he falls and loses a life.

Paper Mario[edit]

The whale in Paper Mario

In Paper Mario, during the cutscene where Mario rides the Whale to Lavalava Island, a Goonie can be seen flying over the ocean. Unlike most characters in Paper Mario, this Goonie is rendered in polygons rather than sprites.

Mario Kart series[edit]

Goonies (here called Little Birdies[4]) make a cameo appearance in Cheep-Cheep Island in Mario Kart: Super Circuit. Like small birds in later titles, they simply fly away temporarily if the player drives into one.

Goonies are background elements in Wave 4 of the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart Tour, in the Yoshi's Island course.

Nintendo Puzzle Collection[edit]

Flocks of Goonies appear to the right upon clearing a stage of Round 5 in the Action Mode of Yoshi no Cookie in Nintendo Puzzle Collection.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story / Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr.'s Journey[edit]

Goonies have a very minor appearance in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and its port during the Bowser's Castle and Tower of Yikk fight. When Bowser attacks, Goonies occasionally fly out from nearby trees, and appear in the opening sequence of the giant battle.

Unused appearances[edit]

Unused sprites of a Goonie found in Super Princess Peach

Goonies have unused enemy graphics in Super Princess Peach, ripped from Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 with a darker palette.[5] However, Skeleton Goonies and Flightless Skeleton Goonies make a background cameo in Wavy Beach.
