Stars (uncapitalized as stars in Mario Party 3 and Mario Party 5 and referred to as Super Stars in the Bowser Party mode of Mario Party 10) are recurring collectible items in the Super Mario franchise. They look identical to Super Stars, and also Power Stars prior to their redesign in Super Mario Galaxy. Collecting these is the main objective of most Mario Party games.
History
Yoshi
Stars first appear in the game Yoshi. In A-Type mode, they start appearing after hatching 70 eggs in the Family Computer and Nintendo Entertainment System versions, or 30 in the Game Boy version. In B-Type mode, they appear on level 5 and award 250 bonus points. A Star also represents the third type of selectable background music.
Mario & Wario
Four stars appear in every course of Mario & Wario, except those in the first stage. Wanda can guide her character over to the Stars, and by collecting all four, the player earns an extra life. By touching a star with her wand, Wanda can cause them to dance.
Mario Party series
Stars are most often found at Star Exchanges. On most boards, once a Star is bought, the Star Exchange moves to another location. Traditionally, 20 coins are required to pay for these Stars, but some of the more recent titles in the series feature unique ways for acquiring these precious items. For instance, in Snowflake Lake, players begin the game with a certain number of Stars and use Chain Chomps to steal them from each other. During duels, Stars and coins can be wagered either via choice (until Mario Party 6, then again in Super Mario Party Jamboree with Pro Rules) or by roulette (since Mario Party 7). Additionally, at the end of each game, there is an option to receive Bonus Stars to increase the chances of winning the game.
In Mario Party 6, Stars have an additional function. If players finish a board match or play enough minigames, they receive Stars. These Stars can be traded for unlockables in the Star Bank. In Mario Party Advance, Stars appear only during the Bonus Board, though a talking one appears in the introduction of the game itself.
Mario Party 9 and Mario Party 10 have a different collection system. Instead of collecting Stars to become the Super Star, one must collect Mini Stars (or complete various other goals in Mario Party: Island Tour). However, at the end of a party in Mario Party 9 and Mario Party 10, five Mini Stars combine into one Star when the game is determining the Super Star. In Mario Party 10, however, Stars are the main objective in the side amiibo Party mode, where they can once again be collected for 20 coins (40 for both if the homestretch is reached). In Mario Party: Star Rush, Stars are obtained by beating boss minigames in the Toad Scramble mode or by collecting Star Balloons in the Balloon Bash mode. In Super Mario Party and Mario Party Superstars, Stars are given by Toadette, who moves around the board like in early Mario Party games.
In Super Mario Party Jamboree and its Nintendo Switch 2 port, if a player has Peach as a Jamboree Buddy, the player can buy two Stars for 20 coins each. While playing on Rainbow Galleria during a flash sale, a player can buy one Star for only 10 coins, or two Stars for 20 coins with any Jamboree Buddy. While under the effect of a Markup Sticker, Stars cost 40 coins each.
Luigi's Mansion

In Luigi's Mansion, a particular star known as Mario's Star is one of Mario's lost possessions. It is found in the Observatory of the mansion in Area 3.
New Super Mario Bros.
Big Stars appear in the Mario Vs. Luigi mode of New Super Mario Bros. Collecting a Big Star resets everything in the level, and the goal of the mode is to collect a certain number of Big Stars as determined by the host.

Notes
- The artwork of the Star in Mario & Wario is identical to the Super Star's artwork in the Super Mario World instruction booklet.
- The maximum number of Stars players can hold in most Mario Party games is 99, while from Mario Party 4 to Mario Party 7, the maximum number of Stars was extended to 999 (like with coins), though it is impossible to have that many Stars legitimately.[3]
