Mari is a Luma and identical twin to Lu. She is depicted exclusively in the Rosalina's Storybook chapters added to the Nintendo Switch port of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which describes Mari and Lu's backstory.

Initially living with Rosalina, Lu, and the other Lumas aboard the Comet Observatory, Mari becomes separated after turning into a star. Over the course of hundreds of years, Mari repeatedly wakes up on new worlds. In conversations with these worlds' inhabitants, Mari is shown to have lost most of her memories. After seeing a purple glimmer after waking up in a dark world, Mari recalls Lu's name, and turns back into a star with a newfound determination to reunite with Lu.

Mari is initially described as impulsive and outgoing in contrast to Lu's shyness. After being separated from Lu, however, Mari eventually becomes more nihilistic, much like the Lumalee seen in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
