The Sinking Swamp[1][2] is an obstacle in Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2. It is a hazardous, dark greenish blue liquid; if Mario (or Luigi) touches it, he will not be able to escape and will eventually sink and drown, losing a life. The Sinking Swamp, like poison, deadly quicksand, and dark matter, has a sign with a skull.

History[edit]

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

The Sinking Swamp makes its debut in Super Mario Galaxy. It only appears in Toy Time Galaxy in the mission "Luigi's Purple Coins". Mario (or Luigi) must carefully and cautiously collect a number of Purple Coins within three minutes on a pixel Luigi-shaped planet made up of disappearing and rotating platforms while avoiding falling into the Sinking Swamp. Here, the Sinking Swamp appears as Luigi's hat, overalls, and buttons. It replaces the lava from the pixel Mario side of the planet.

Super Mario Galaxy 2[edit]

In Super Mario Galaxy 2, the Sinking Swamp appears only in Boo Moon Galaxy and the Mario Squared Galaxy.

In Boo Moon Galaxy, the Sinking Swamp appears in the missions "Silver Stars Pop-Up" and "The Star in the Sinking Swamp", on the Sinking Swamp planet, acting as its primary obstacle. Throughout both missions, the player must cross the planet with the help of various Snake Blocks while trying not to fall into the Sinking Swamp. Octoboos, sinking platforms, and unpredictable Snake Blocks make the passage through the Sinking Swamp more difficult. Additionally, the planet folds itself twice, creating a wall and then a ceiling, where the player must proceed, making perception more challenging. After the second fold, the Comet Medal and a Launch Star toward the teeter-totter moon planet appear. If the player takes the Launch Star, they will proceed with the mission "Silver Stars Pop-Up". However, a little further from the Launch Star is a smaller Snake Block. If the player character lands on the Snake Block, he will reach a new area. Here, the Snake Block is much faster and more unpredictable, and there is a large group of Octoboos. After evading all the obstacles, the player character reaches the Power Star, thus completing the mission "The Star in the Sinking Swamp".

In the Mario Squared Galaxy, the Sinking Swamp plays a minor role, as it appears only in the second mission. Here, like in Toy Time Galaxy, the Sinking Swamp reappears as Luigi's hat, overalls, and buttons. To complete the mission, the player must collect the 100 Purple Coins within two minutes while evading the Cosmic Clones and avoiding falling into the Sinking Swamp.
