The mode consists of six sub-modes: Free Play[2], Daily Challenge,[1] Tag Match,[3] Survival,[4] Showdown Minigame Battle,[4] and the unlockable Boss Rush, each of which is hosted by a different character and have players partaking in different water-themed activities.

Free Play[edit]

Free Play is hosted by a blue Toad and has players on a wooden stage with a view of the ocean. Players get to pick which minigames they want to play out of all 112 minigames available. They can be organized by All, Free-for-All, 1 vs. 3, 2 vs. 2, Duel, Item, Showdown, Boss, Motion, Endless, Koopathlon, Kaboom-Squad, Rhythm and Favorites, the last which being any minigames the player has favorited. Like in Mario Party Superstars, any wins and losses in minigames are recorded until the sub-mode is exited.

Daily Challenge[edit]

The Daily Challenge is hosted by Lakitu and has players riding jet skis. Players choose between three sets of themed minigames to play and attempt to win each one to earn Stars. The sets rotate daily. The following sets are available, including their minigames and Lakitu's description:[1]

Tag Match[edit]

Tag Match is hosted by Boom Boom and has players riding on banana boats. Two teams of two players will battle against each other in 2 vs. 2 minigames only. While playing offline or online with friends, the first team to reach 3, 5 or 10 Stars wins. While the first minigame is chosen randomly, the following minigames are chosen by a member of the team who lost the previous minigame. In worldwide matchmaking, the goal is instead to battle opponents to increase the streak of wins. If the players lose, the streak is reset to 0.

Survival[edit]

Survival mode is hosted by Pom Pom and has players parasailing. Players are matched against new players every round to increase their Skill Grade, with the Free-for-All minigame being chosen by voting. When a player has a high enough streak of wins, they will face off against another player in a randomly chosen Duel minigame. Losing a minigame lowers the player's Skill Grade. Unlike the other sub-modes, Survival can only be played online.

Showdown Minigame Battle[edit]

Showdown Minigame Battle is hosted by a red-shelled Koopa Troopa and has players riding in submarines. Players compete in Showdown minigames to get the most amount of coins. The winner is the one with the most coins after 5, 7 or 10 rounds. While playing in worldwide matchmaking, only 5 rounds can be played.

Boss Rush[edit]

Unlocked when clearing 30 achievements and reaching Platinum Rank, Boss Rush is a mode where four players challenge Impostor Bowser to clear all five Boss Minigames in a row, while simultaneously competing against each other to get the most points within each minigame. The MVP is determined at the end of the Boss Rush, as players are being given points based on their placement in the minigames, with the one with the most points being declared the winner.
