Leaf piles
Leaf piles in Mario Kart Tour

Leaf piles are a game mechanic commonly found in autumn-themed stages within the Mario and Donkey Kong franchises. Their most common role is to release an item when interacted with in a certain way.

History

Super Mario Galaxy

In Super Mario Galaxy, leaf piles are scattered on the Gold Leaf Galaxy's starting planet. When Mario or Luigi spin on a leaf pile, it gives three Star Bits or a single coin.

Mario Kart series

Leaf piles appear in the Mario Kart Wii course Maple Treeway, and its remakes in Mario Kart 7 and Mario Kart Tour, and also in the autumn variation of the Mario Kart 8 course Animal Crossing. They act similarly to crates, disappearing when hit by an item or racer and dispensing Bananas, coins, Mushrooms and, occasionally, Super Stars. They reappear after a short amount of time, and remain in their usual locations during time trials, although they do not dispense any items. Unlike crates, leaf piles do not slow racers down when they hit them.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

Large leaf piles appear in the Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze level Horn Top Hop.[1] The Kongs can stand and walk on top of them as on ground, but rolling into one causes it to scatter, which most commonly releases an item such as a banana or a Banana Coin. One pile in particular has a horn buried in it that releases a Pointy Tucks and a Puzzle Piece in an alternative fashion.
