Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is an upcoming compilation of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 set to be released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025 as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.[1] First announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, both games will be sold separately on the Nintendo eShop, and can be purchased together in a bundle.[1]
Differences
Gameplay
- A free update will be available that, when played on Nintendo Switch 2, will allow the games to be played with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.[10]
- As with Super Mario Odyssey, the games feature an Assist Mode, which increases the player's maximum health, allows them to recover health by remaining stationary, and automatically returns them to solid ground if they fall into the void.[11]
- Rosalina's Storybook includes an additional chapter for Super Mario Galaxy, and a brand new storybook is added to Super Mario Galaxy 2.[11]
- Both games are now localized in Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese. In addition, both Simplified and Traditional Chinese languages will also be available for both games.
- Both games have been re-titled in Korean from their original Super Mario Wii moniker to the Super Mario Galaxy moniker, making the Korean versions consistent with other regions, and simultaneously dropping the Wii branding.
- The soundtrack for both games can be accessed and listened to from the main menu.[11]
- amiibo are now supported, and, like in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, scanning them gives the player in-game items.
Visuals
- As with the version of Super Mario Galaxy included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars, the games run at 1080p in docked mode and 720p in handheld mode.[12]
- A free update will be available that, when played on Nintendo Switch 2, will allow the games to run at 4K in docked mode and 1080p in handheld mode.[11]
- The UI of both games has been updated.[12]
- Certain environmental and character textures have been replaced with higher-resolution versions.[13] This is most apparent with the border in the opening of Super Mario Galaxy 2, which now has a painterly texture on its edges as opposed to the blur on its edges in the original game.[14]
- The opening pre-rendered cutscene of Super Mario Galaxy has been re-rendered at a higher resolution with certain textures replaced with higher-resolution versions. The aspect ratio has also been changed from 2.20:1 to 1.78:1, matching the gameplay aspect ratio and showing more on the top and bottom.[13]
- The font for the Life Meter, currencies, and the "Welcome to the Galaxy" text has been altered to be less glossy and resemble the modern font used in the series starting with Super Mario 3D Land, and the latter message is fully capitalized.[1]
amiibo
The Mario and Rosalina amiibo
Two new amiibo figures are set to release on April 2, 2026,[1] to coincide with the game and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: one depicts Mario being launched from a Launch Star, while the other depicts Rosalina reading to a group of Lumas. Scanning any Mario or Rosalina amiibo grants a Life Mushroom or 1-Up Mushroom, respectively. Additionally, amiibo figures from the Super Mario franchise grant coins, while all other compatible amiibo grant Star Bits.[11]
