Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a bundle of remastered versions of Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 released worldwide for the Nintendo Switch on October 2, 2025 as part of the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary celebration.[1] First announced during the September 2025 Nintendo Direct, both games can also be purchased separately on the Nintendo eShop.[1]
Changes from the version of Super Mario Galaxy included in Super Mario 3D All-Stars
Gameplay
- An update, when played on the Nintendo Switch 2, allows the games to be played with Joy-Con 2 mouse controls.[13]
- As with Super Mario Odyssey, the games feature an Assist Mode that allows the player to start with six health as if they collected a Life Mushroom, allows them to recover health by remaining stationary, and automatically returns them to solid ground if they fall into the void. Switching between Assist Mode and Normal Mode returns the player to the last checkpoint, resetting collectibles and enemies as if the player had died.[14]
- Rosalina's Storybook includes an additional chapter for Super Mario Galaxy, and a brand new storybook is added to Super Mario Galaxy 2.[14]
- The soundtrack for both games can be accessed and listened to from their respective title screens.[14]
- amiibo are now supported, and, like in Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury, scanning them gives the player in-game items.
- Although only pressing
is required to start the game as in Super Mario 3D All-Stars,
on the title screen no longer emits a yellow glow effect that appears around the logo in either game.
- When saving, an icon appears at the bottom left corner of the screen. The player can freely move around while the game is saving.
Visuals
- An update, when played on the Nintendo Switch 2, allows the games to run at 4K in docked mode and 1080p in handheld mode.[14]
- The UI of both games has been updated.[15]
- The HUD font used for the Life Meter, currencies, race ranks, and the "Welcome to the Galaxy!", "3", "2", "1", "Go!" (Super Mario Galaxy), "Start!" (Super Mario Galaxy 2), "Time's up!", "Too bad!", "Goal!", "You lose", "Game Over", "You Got a Star!", "You Got a Grand Star!", and "The End" text has been replaced with the modern Super Mario font introduced in Super Mario 3D Land, and appears less glossy than in the originals. In addition, the aforementioned text is now stylized in all caps.[16]
- Most environmental and character textures have been replaced with higher-resolution versions.[17]
- The opening pre-rendered cutscene of Super Mario Galaxy has been re-rendered at a higher resolution with certain textures replaced with higher-resolution versions. The aspect ratio has also been changed from 2.20:1 to 1.78:1, matching the gameplay aspect ratio and showing more on the top and bottom.[17]
Text and translations
- Both games are now localized in Dutch and Brazilian Portuguese.
- Both games have been re-titled in Korean from their original Super Mario Wii moniker to the Super Mario Galaxy moniker, making the Korean versions consistent with other regions, and simultaneously dropping the Wii branding.
- In the Korean version, KoreanNGL is now used as the body text font instead of KoreanSDNR for both games.
amiibo
Two new amiibo figures are set to release on April 2, 2026,[1] to coincide with the game and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: one depicts Mario being launched from a Launch Star, while the other depicts Rosalina reading to a group of Lumas. Scanning any Mario or Rosalina amiibo grants a Life Mushroom or 1-Up Mushroom, respectively. Additionally, amiibo figures from the Super Mario franchise grant coins, while all other compatible amiibo grant Star Bits.[14]
Reception
Critical reception
The compilation has received positive reviews. Several critics opine that the games have both aged well, while criticism has been directed at the controls and lack of fully remade visual assets.

Nintendo Switch | Andy Robinson, VGC | 5/5 | "Super Mario Galaxy and [Super Mario] Galaxy 2 were considered among the best games ever made when they were released, and a decade and a half later that still hasn't changed. The attempt to replace the Wii Remote's pointer controls with Joy-Con gyro movement never feels quite as intuitive as the original experience, but this concession won't dampen the spirits of anyone lucky enough to be playing these games for the first time. Both games remain the high point of creativity in the platform game genre, making this one of the easiest recommendations we've ever made." |
Nintendo Switch | Ollie Reynolds, Nintendo Life | 9/10 | "There’s no question about it: Super Mario Galaxy and [Super Mario] Galaxy 2 are two of the most sublime games ever created. With gameplay that subverts expectations and scenarios that wouldn’t be possible if not for the creative freedom of the cosmos, they represent the Mario series at its absolute best. They look better than ever, boast small yet welcome additions, and expand upon the narrative with new storybook pages. Gyro aiming simply isn’t as effective as the Wii pointer, however, and you’ll be recentring the onscreen cursor a lot. Very minor issues with the camera are also a bit more noticeable now than they were 15 years ago, but the fact that Nintendo managed to pull off some utterly ridiculous sequences without the camera going haywire remains a remarkable feat. These games command a high price on [Nintendo] Switch, to be sure, but you’ll be playing them for the rest of your life." |
Nintendo Switch | James Berich, Press Start Australia | 7.5/10 | "Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 is a straightforward compilation that brings two of the most celebrated platformers to modern hardware. Together, they form one of the strongest adventures in the Mario canon. But with some barebones upgrades and inconsistent visual improvements, these are hardly the definitive versions of either [Super Mario] Galaxy or [Super Mario] Galaxy 2. Regardless, despite the visual presentation, it's hard to deny the strength of the core at this compilation. Both games boast inventive and engaging level design that, with (mostly) improved controls, are easy to enjoy today." |
