Making their game debut in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, one Big Buzzy Beetle acts as a mini-boss of Hither Thither Hill, the third boss battle of Decalburg's first world. Mario must defeat it to continue his adventure. In battle, the Big Buzzy Beetle can go into its shell and ram into Mario, just like normal Buzzy Beetles. However, the Big Buzzy Beetle is impervious to all attacks (except for Ice Flowers, which will damage it), with its only weak spot being its underbelly. The boss must be flipped over by either successfully jumping on it or by using a POW Block sticker. When it is upside-down, the Big Buzzy Beetle can ram into Mario again and bring itself up. It has 40 HP, and drops an HP-Up Heart upon defeat. It is also the only optional boss in the game.

Paper Mario: Color Splash[edit]

A single Big Buzzy Beetle appears in Paper Mario: Color Splash, serving as the Buzzy Beetle Tower base in The Emerald Circus. It can be flipped over by using a POW Block card.

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros. U[edit]

Three Big Buzzy Beetles from New Super Mario Bros. U

Big Buzzy Beetles first appear in the Super Mario series in New Super Mario Bros. U. They are found in Rising Tides of Lava from Peach's Castle, where they act as both enemies and platforms. Mario can jump and stand on top of a Big Buzzy Beetle's shell while it is floating on lava when it rises, showing them to be immune to lava. When not floating on lava and when it is not stomped on, it just retreats into the shell. They are one of the few enemies that do not reappear in New Super Luigi U.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS / Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Big Buzzy Beetles are present yet again in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, and Super Mario Maker 2. The player can enlarge a normal Buzzy Beetle with a Super Mushroom, and thus the implication of Big Buzzy Beetles within the game. Big Buzzy Beetles are no longer immune to lava like in New Super Mario Bros. U; they simply sink into the lava to be consistent with other enemies.

Mario Golf: World Tour[edit]

In Mario Golf: World Tour, several Big Buzzy Beetles can be found on Hole 8 of Wiggler Park.

Sprites found in prototype revisions of Super Mario World include sprites for large Buzzy Beetles, but it is not included in the final game in any way.[1]

A giant Buzzy Beetle appears as an unused enemy in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, suggesting that they were going to appear during gameplay, but were either never implemented into any level or removed before the final release.
