Swoopulas are more powerful species of Swoopers that absorb HP from Mario (taking 2 HP per bite) in Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. The attack is similar to a Fuzzy attack. Usually at the beginning of battle, they will be perched on the ceiling. To get them down, Mario must hit them with either an item, Quake Hammer, Hammer Throw, or a particular partner attack. A Superguard will also work. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door however, normal Swoopulas start the battle in the air. Unlike the Swoopulas in the first Paper Mario game, they may only attack once before the battle starts.

A Swoopula is a bat like creature. It is a more powerful variety of a Swooper found in the Paper Mario series. It attacks by leeching hit points from Mario or his partner in a similar manner to a Fuzzy's attack. Its name is based off Count Dracula.

History[edit]

Paper Mario[edit]

In Paper Mario, Swoopulas appear in the Crystal Palace. At the start of battle, Swoopulas are perched on the ceiling and can be knocked down with an item, Special Move, certain partner moves, or the Quake Hammer or Hammer Throw abilities. They fly down briefly to attack, but return to their roost unless previously knocked down. They leech two hit points at a time up to five times unless an Action Command gauge is filled up first, similar to Jungle Fuzzy.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door[edit]

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Swoopulas appear in the Palace of Shadow and slightly late in the Pit of 100 Trials and start battle in the air rather than on the ceiling. Their leeching move now takes four hit points, but is only used once per turn. An even stronger version known as Swampire appears near the end of the Pit of 100 Trials.
