Mega Dry Bones (originally known as Super Dry Bones[1] and also known as Big Dry Bones) are larger versions of Dry Bones first appearing in New Super Mario Bros.

History[edit]

Super Mario series[edit]

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

Super Dry Bones
Mario approaches a Super Dry Bones

In New Super Mario Bros., jumping on a Super Dry Bones merely stuns it for a second, during which it head shakes and makes a noise. Super Dry Bones can only be dismantled with a Ground Pound; the collapsing noise they make when dismantled is low-pitched, similarly to Dry Bowser's. After about five seconds, the Super Dry Bones comes back together. Mini Mario cannot dismantle a Super Dry Bones, and they are unaffected by fireballs.

Two Super Dry Bones appear in the World 1-Tower near the boss door. However, the player cannot reach them.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii[edit]

Big Dry Bones in New Super Mario Bros. Wii, unlike in New Super Mario Bros., make a rattling sound when jumped on as opposed to the sound that normally plays when stomping on an enemy. Freezing them with iceballs has little effect, as they thaw the instant they are frozen. They are also defeated upon touching lava.

New Super Mario Bros. 2[edit]

Big Dry Bones in New Super Mario Bros. 2 are found in some towers and castles, as well as World 6-A.

New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe[edit]

Big Dry Bones appear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. However, they are no longer affected by lava. In a secret room in Iggy's Volcanic Castle, the player must bounce off some Big Dry Bones that are walking on lava to access a Star Coin.

Super Mario Maker series[edit]

Big Dry Bones also appear in Super Mario Maker, Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS and Super Mario Maker 2. Players can enlarge a standard Dry Bones with a Super Mushroom, which ends with the creation of a Big Dry Bones. In the Super Mario World style, Big Dry Bones can throw large bones, like their smaller counterparts.

In these games, the player can attack Big Dry Bones the same way as in past titles; when riding a Yoshi or Spin Jumping, the player can cause a Big Dry Bones to crumble with a simple stomp. If given wings to become a Big Parabones, it will not lose them unless it's crumbled.

Mario Party series[edit]

Mario Party: Island Tour[edit]

Big Dry Bones appear on the third and fourth Star Stages of the Star-Crossed Skyway board in Mario Party: Island Tour. They give out seven Mini Ztars.

Mario Party: Star Rush[edit]

A Mega Dry Bones appears as a boss in Mario Party: Star Rush, where he is fought in the minigame, Mega Dry Bones's Femur Fever. Players need to Ground Pound the platform they are standing on to launch a cannonball at him. Each Ground Pound lights up one light out of three. If all three are filled, a cannonball is launched. If the Ground Pound is done at the peak of their jump, then two lights are lit up instead of just one. The more allies on a player's team, the faster they can launch cannonballs. Mega Dry Bones can also attack by throwing a bone that goes through each players' platforms in a straight line starting at either Player 4 or at Player 1. When Mega Dry Bones' health bar goes past the halfway mark, the bones he throws are now on fire and he attacks more frequently.

Names in other languages[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Since the introduction of large-sized enemies as a concept in 1988, the Japanese monikers applied to individual variants has been varied, as have the localizations of these names. Standardization occurred around 2010, after which the localized adaptations of these names have also largely been consistent with the following schemes:

  • 「でか」(Deka) is the preferred prefix applied to large enemies in most of the mainline Super Mario series of platformers. In English, this name is usually adapted as "Big" (e.g,「でかカロン」(Deka Karon) is translated as "Big Dry Bones").
  • 「巨大」(Kyodai) is the preferred prefix applied to large enemies and bosses in the Mario Party series. In English, this name is usually adapted as "Mega" (e.g,「巨大カロン」(Kyodai Karon) is translated as "Mega Dry Bones"). The large Dry Bones in Mario Party: Island Tour is an exception to this convention, which is referred to as「でかカロン」(Deka Karon, "Big Dry Bones").

Names in other languages[edit]

In Japanese,「でかカロン」(Deka Karon) and「巨大カロン」(Kyodai Karon) are listed together because they are both in current use. The contemporaneous localized adaptations for「でかカロン」(Deka Karon) and「巨大カロン」(Kyodai Karon) are listed first for the applicable languages and denoted as such in the "notes" column. Where there is only one contemporary localization for both names, it is listed first and the "note" column is left empty. Subsequent names are listed in chronological order for each language, from oldest to newest, and have the media with which they are associated in the "notes" column. Names exclusive to localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia are not prioritized due to concerns about circular reporting, and are only listed first for their respective languages if they are the only ones available.
