In Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, they can be created by shaking a Grinder in editing mode. Their appearance now resembles that of a torus with eyes. When Mario jumps on one from above, it can bounce him higher, having a similar function to Trampolines and Note Blocks. If Mario makes contact with one from the side or below, it bounces Mario away, serving more as a hindrance than an aid. Enemies and objects are not affected by Bumpers and will freely pass through them.

Bumpers are objects in the Super Mario series. They can bounce Mario away upon contact.

History[edit]

New Super Mario Bros.[edit]

In New Super Mario Bros., they appear in the underwater sections of World 1-A and World 8-3. They appear as translucent yellow bubbles with an eight-spoked plantlike symbol on or inside them. Bumpers will bounce Mario in the opposite of the direction he ran into them from.

Super Mario Galaxy[edit]

Floating bumpers[1] (also localized as inflatable bulbs)[2] appear in Bubble Blast Galaxy, a course lined with electric rails. Mario traverses the course within a bubble, and making contact with a bumper bounces him back in the opposite direction. Pieces of meat[3] are floating bumpers found in Ghostly Galaxy, where they bounce back Mario in areas navigated with Pull Stars.

Super Mario Maker / Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS[edit]

In Super Mario Maker (v1.30 or later) and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS, Bumpers can be created by shaking a Grinder in editing mode. They are donut-shaped balloons that stay still in the air. When Mario jumps on one from above, it can bounce him higher similar to trampolines and Note Blocks; if Mario bumps into one from the side or below, it bounces Mario away. Enemies, objects, and projectiles are not affected by Bumpers and will freely pass through them.

In the Super Mario Bros. game style, Bumpers are striped light and dark green, with eyes similar to that of Mr. Eraser. In the Super Mario Bros. 3 style, they are checkered green and white similar to the Jump Blocks from New Super Mario Bros. Wii, with the same type of eyes. In the Super Mario World style, they are white with pink diamonds and beady eyes. In the New Super Mario Bros. U style, they retain the beady eyes and are yellow with an orange star pattern, resembling Lemmy's balls from the New Super Mario Bros. series.

Super Mario Maker 2[edit]

Bumpers reappear in Super Mario Maker 2 as objects under the Gizmos category, and act and look just like they did back in Super Mario Maker and Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS. They are now separate from Grinders and they are absent in the Super Mario 3D World game style.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder[edit]

Bumpers return in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, where, instead of rings, they are square and triangular.
