First appearance Mario is Missing! (1993)

Mayor Bernstein is a character exclusive to the PC version of Mario is Missing!, appearing as the fictional mayor of Jerusalem, Israel. Like all other mayors in the game, he contacts Luigi via videophone upon his arrival in the city, as well as after all of the artifacts in the area have been returned to their rightful locations. In the first call, Mayor Bernstein tells Luigi to read the newspaper and inflict damage control on the "tortoises".

Once all of the artifacts have been recovered, Luigi receives a second call from Mayor Bernstein, who thanks him for saving the city from the Koopas and wishes him luck on the rest of his adventure.

Like several of the other mayors, Mayor Bernstein is named after a staff member who worked on Mario is Missing!; they share a name with Ed Bernstein, who is credited under "Special Thanks".

Quotes[edit]

  • "Let's call a turtle a tortoise, Luigi. I'm Mayor Bernstein. I've been the Mayor here for two whole weeks and already our landmarks are loose, our treasures are treading water and we're in trouble. I'm setting up a sub-committee but I want you out there now doing damage control! When we hang up, I'll send the daily paper to you on your computer. Read it, live it, fix it. Over and out."
  • "Luigi. You've saved our city from the Koopas, and the people are grateful. Thank you, good luck and good bye! And say hi to Mario when you find him!"
