Greg Campbell, usually referred to as just Greg, is an ensign aboard the USS Nimitz who appears as the main supporting character in the Game Boy. He is the eldest brother of the Campbell family, and lives with his younger brothers Josh and Rick, along with an unnamed mother.
History[edit]
Greg first appears aboard the USS Nimitz alongside his crewmate Jose, where he spots a mysterious stationary black cloud over an uninhabited island in the Pacific Ocean. Jose, however, tells him to "get [his] head out of the clouds" and get back to work, saying that an aircraft carrier is not a place to fool around. Later, in his bunk, Greg recalls having heard about such black clouds before and finds a letter written by his younger brother Josh, explaining that the black cloud is a sign of Tatanga's presence on Earth and that only Mario can stop him. It then continues by explaining how to summon Mario from a Game Boy. Reading this letter, Greg finds his brother to have "some imagination". Back on the hangar deck, Greg notes that the cloud still does not move despite 30-knot winds as one of his crewmates tells him to get to work, saying that they are on DEFCON 3.
Later, while off-duty, Greg plays Super Mario Land on his Game Boy in his bunk. Playing the game, he expresses incredulousness over his brother's claims that the black clouds is a sign of Tatanga's presence, explaining that he has been at sea for too long. Finishing World 1-1, Greg finds three doors at the end of the level instead the usual two and, guiding Mario through the middle door, summons him. When Mario asks where Tatanga is, Greg, in shock of what had just happened, says that he hopes that they are in the "looney bin" so that he will not when he is sent there.
As Fortress Tatanga nears completion, Mario tells Greg that he needs to check out the island, thanking him for getting the Sky Pop. Greg is unsure about this, but Mario tells him to have faith in him and flies off to the island, saying that he handles things like this all of the time. Later, as Mario flies back to the USS Nimitz after finding that Tatanga's minions are using weapons made for Earth, Greg catches him as he is about to crash.
On the hangar deck, Greg asks if Mario is alright, to which he replies in the affirmative, besides the fact that his Sky Pop was shot by Tatanga's minions and that he just crash landed, thanking him for catching him. Mario asks for access to the USS Nimitz's weapons to fight Tatanga, explaining that his minions are using weapons made for the real world. Greg is initially hesistant, and does not want anyone to see Mario, saying that he might get in trouble for bringing "unauthorized video game personnel" aboard the carrier. Mario says that he will return to Sarasaland, but adds that he has not seen trouble until he gets involved with Tatanga. With this, Greg realizes that he is an ordinance officer on a United States Navy warship, and that the island is United States territory. With this, Greg and Mario beginning formulating a plan to defeat Tatanga's minions.
After Mario defeats Tatanga's army, Greg notes that the black cloud on the island is disappearing, with Mario explaining that it means that Tatanga's army is escaping to Sarasaland, explaining that he has to re-enter the Game Boy. When Greg expresses confusion over his sudden decision, he explains that he will return if Tatanga comes back to the real world. As Greg congratulates Mario for keeping the United States safe, Mario explains that they are all part of the same team and the world is in good hands thanks to people like him before re-entering his Game Boy.
The International Enquisitor story, "Are three-inch tall aliens invading our world?", explains that Greg believes that Tatanga's army is invading Earth and that they come out of Game Boy, saying that he does not know what would have happened had Mario not come to stop them.
