Dr. Mario, also simply called Doctor, is a medical doctor that shares an uncannly resemblance to Dr. Mario, but he is no member of the Mario family: he is the father of Kinoppe, making him the son (or son-in-law) of Dr. Mario Nakamatsu. He appears as a semi-recurring character in the Super Mario Kodansha manga. He is often paired up with Nurse Peach's lookalike, but their relationship seems to be strictly professional.
He first appears in Super Mario Kart 1, where he is working at the Mushroom Kingdom Hospital. He takes care of the injured Donkey Kong Jr., after Mario brings him there, following a kart accident. He later comes to Mario's victory ceremony to request reimbursement for Junior's hospital bill.
In Super Mario Kart 3, during the Super Mario Cart Rally, Luigi gets badly injured, so Mario and Peach rush to the hospital. In doing so, their team takes the lead, and the rest of the racers follow them to the hospital, driving through the building's halls. After Dr. Mario tends to Luigi, the Mario team speeds away, just as the doctor was pulling out the hospital bill, thus getting run over by the rest of the racers who were still following Mario. Due to the damages, the medical board sends Dr. Mario and Nurse Peach to an isolated clinic by the Safari Course. There, the Mario team has to visit the doctor once again after Luigi is stung by a Kurayami Sasori. After revealing that Luigi is close to being killed by the poison, the Doctor reveals that the Amazons of Jungle Course should know where the antidote is. Once again speeding away right as the doctor pulls out the bill, the Mario team accidentally lures the rival racers to follow them, running over the clinic. Dr. Mario gets fired up and decides to join the rally so he can win the money prize to pay for the damages, driving with Nurse Peach in a kart shaped like Mario's head. While chasing the pilot, the doctor crashes into Bowser and Wario's kart. To hinder Mario's quest to save his brother, Wario takes the place of the doctor (while Nurse Peach is presumably out cold from the impact), and Bowser carries off the incapacitated doctor. While Wario nearly succeeds in preventing Luigi from being cured, due to Cannon Ball Z's intervention, Bowser loses his kart and decides to reach the finish line on foot, while carrying Cannon Ball Z (who was just revealed to be the Mushroom King) on his back, and making the doctor carry Cannon Boy z (Toad) on his. Unfortunately, having lost their vehicle, the pilots are disqualified, and nobody gets the prize.
In Super Mario: Yoshi Island 3, set after the events of the game, Dr. Mario witnesses as a Harry Hedgehog stings his granddaughter. To expel the poison from her blood, the doctor needs an immediate transfusion, but they live in the Mushroom Kingdom countryside. While Kinopio-san goes to deliver the rare blood type via bullet train, Baby Bowser attacks it in order to kidnap Baby Peach, who was on board. The Yossy Helper Team intervenes, saves Baby Peach, and delivers the blood to the doctor just in the nick of time. Despite the story being set in Mario's infancy era, both Dr. Mario and Kinoppe keep their regular ages.
