Nanette Hallis, usually referred to as Nanette, is a character who appears in the Game Boy comic Pipes is Pipes. She lives in a summer rental in Seaside Heights, New Jersey alongside her son Michael Hallis, and works at the Clam Creek Nuclear Reactor. However, due to her shift, she is rarely at home.
History[edit]
Nanette first appears at the Clam Creek Nuclear Reactor, where her son Michael calls her, asking her what time she will return home from work. In responds, Nanette responds that things are going very well at the power plant today, and says that she will be back from the plant by midnight. Michael then asks when she will get an earlier shift, to which she responds that she already has an earlier shift. She continues by explaining that she cannot get away from work, but promises that it will change in six months. About to end the call, Nanette asks what his plans are for this afternoon; Michael explains that he and Jonathan were thinking about checking out the boardwalk, saying that he saw some interesting lights earlier (actually Tatanga's smokeworks display).
Soon after hanging up, alarms begin to sound in the nuclear power plant, with an alert informing of a breach in the reactor coolant system. A nearby co-worker informs Nanette that pressure is building in the reactor and that the reactor is overheating, adding that all backup systems appear to be inactive. Fearing a nuclear meltdown, Nanette says that she has to rescue Michael, but the co-worker reminds her that they have to stay and try to solve the problem.
Later, as Mario enters the nuclear reactor, Nanette wonders why this is happening, explaining that they have three backup systems; her co-worker tells her not to worry, saying that they still have forty minutes left before meltdown.
Later, after Mario defeats the Suu gnawing on the pipes, Nanette notes the radiation level is stabilizing, exclaiming that she and her co-workers did something right and wishes to know what it was. She continues by explaining that the control systems are responding again and that they will be able seal the leaks. Rodney McCorlde, having found what appears to be a "Super Mario doll" among the pipes, enters the room, says that they are in trouble with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Nanette decides to take the "doll" to her department, saying that she will take care of it and fill out the appropriate forms, with Rodney saying that he hopes to forget that this ever happened.
In another part of the plant, Nanette, having put the "Super Mario doll" and his Sky Pop in a locker, decides to open the locker, wishing to get a response from the "doll", believing that "it" might tell her some information on what had happened earlier in the nuclear reactor. Suddenly, the "doll" begins to talk, screaming for help, and Nanette, realizing that the "doll" is actually Mario, lets him out of the bag. Mario recognizes Nanette, saying that she lives in a summer rental alongside her son Michael as she looks in bewilderment. Mario continues by explaining that her son may be trouble and that he is the only one who can save him. With Nanette still in disbelief, Mario explains that Michael and Daisy need him, and that he does not have time to argue, telling her to get out of her way if she refuses to help. He begins trying to climb into the Sky Pop, but is too weak to fly from radiation poisoning, with Nanette commenting that he will not be able to fly anywhere. However, she offers to drive him Michael's house, telling him to hop into her purse.
Later, after Tatanga's army retreats back into the Game Boy, Nanette and Mario arrive, with the former asking the latter why he vomited into her purse, to which the latter replies that he becomes carsick. She then looks around at the mess created by Tatanga's presence in the house.
Later, after Pionpi returns into the Game Boy after retrieving the Gem of Aicheizi from Michael, Nanette comments that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will never believe what happened, to which Michael adds that Jonathan will not either. She then asks Michael to sit beside her on a sofa, to the latter's surprise, as he expected the former to order him to clean up the mess. Nanette responds that she will later, but she first wants to learn about Mario and "Tanga" in great detail. The comic ends with Michael correcting her that the latter's name is actually "Tatanga".
The International Enquisitor story, "MONSTER ATTACKS NUCLEAR PLANT!", says that, though Nanette thought it was typical day at work, everything went wrong in a very short time.
